“Father.” Midnight whispered as he stared into the eyes of the only person he has in life. “You don’t mean it right?” he asked lowly, his voice shaking in disbelief. “You don’t really want to send me there with him right?” He said, his eyes diverting towards the old man with long white hair and pointed ears standing beside his father.
“I meant every single word I said. I no longer need you here.” His father replied coldly. Midnight suddenly felt a pang of pain in his heart as he stared at his father with begging eyes.
“But I’m your child!” Midnight yelled in desperation and anger. It was evident on the tone of his voice that he could no longer keep his emotions inside. Deep within, he felt so wronged, so betrayed and so unwanted. He couldn’t believe that his own father wants to send him away, what more is with a man he doesn’t even know.
“You are not my child, but rather a constant reminder of a monster who killed my wife.” His father said stoically. Midnight instantly felt like he was struck by a lightning.
He thought he was ready for that reality. He thought that he was ready to face the consequences of what he did. He thought he was ready to finally hear his father blame him for what happened. He really thought he was ready but he was wrong. He only felt like someone was trying to choke him and squeeze his heart. What he felt was something more than agony. He couldn’t handle the pain. The pain of being reminded that he’s the reason why his mother is no longer with them. It was far too much.
Silence reigned in the air for a while until his father broke the tense atmosphere.
“Go ahead head master. You can take him away.”
Midnight’s lowered head snapped upwards, his eyes fixating on his father who was now facing the white haired old man. He saw the unknown man nodding his head understandingly before snapping his fingers twice. Before Midnight could even blink, two buff men wearing golden colored armors and red capes appeared beside him. On top of their head was placed a helmet with two horns on the side as their scraggly long brown beards braided into three sticked out proudly together with their metal covered chests.
“Seize him.” The man Midnight’s father pertained to as ‘head master’ ordered with a demanding voice.
The Viking looking men immediately obliged and grabbed both Midnight’s arm roughly.
“Thank you for your cooperation Mister Dimitrivoux. We will make sure that your son will be able to return safely after forty years.” The old man informed with a tight smile as Midnight on the other hand struggled against the armored men’s tight hold.
He stopped fighting at the old man’s words. His eyes seeming as if they were about to pop out of its sockets. F-forty years? I’ll be gone for forty years? At the thought he thrashed harder, fighting with all his strength. But the men only gripped his arms tighter resulting him to writhe in pain.
“No need head master. You can keep him for eternity if you please.” At this, Midnight’s thrashing came to a halt. His eyes staring at his father incredulously. He couldn’t believe his ears. His father really wants to get rid of him!
“No! No! Let me go!” Midnight thrashed about again, frantically kicking and moving around hoping that somehow he’d be able to escape.
His worry immediately switched from being separated from his father to being brought to that hellish place in a blink of an eye.
At this moment, he doesn’t care about anything else but escaping. He doesn’t even care if his father doesn’t keep him anymore. His concern was now focused on the fact that he will be sent to that dreaded place, what more is for forty years. His father should not at all cost send him there and his father knows it. He can kick him out of his household and Midnight wouldn’t care because Midnight realized that his father never really cared about him. For years he led himself to believe that his father was only acting indifferent towards him because he was still grieving for his mother’s death. But now? He has discovered something even more painful. He discovered that along with his mother’s passing was also his father’s love dying. His mother took his father’s heart with her when she left this world and now he’s left with nothing.
“I’m begging you! Don’t let them take me away. I’ll leave but don’t let them take me there!” Midnight begged through tears.
He didn’t want to go there, he doesn’t want to go there and he will never want to go there. So if it means that he has to lower his pride just to be able to stay, then so be it.
He kneeled and embraced his father’s legs once he was finally able to free himself from his captors. He buried his face between his father’s knees as he cried, but unfortunately, to no avail, he was only kicked away. His father kicked him and he was once again held by the arm like earlier.
Midnight was now completely hopeless, not a single sign of guilt could be seen in his father’s face indicating that he had no plan on sparing him. The Viking looking men beside Midnight then pulled him back to his feet, hiding their sympathy through their emotionless masks as Midnight’s father conversed with the other man.
“We’ll take our leave Mister Dimitrivoux.” The old man said. Midnight’s father smiled politely as Midnight continued to weep.
“Have a pleasant trip then head master.” His father replied, joy evident in his voice. Midnight’s fists balled in anger as he stared at his father’s delighted face.
He understood that his father might be mad at him for what he did as a child but for him to give Midnight to these men who he knew nothing of, was just beyond madness.
“Let’s go.” The old man commanded.
In split seconds Midnight’s vision darkened as he fell to floor, completely unconscious after one of the armored men knocked him off. The next time he woke up, he was in a completely different place.
