Ambush

Madelyn's POV We spent the rest of the day helping carry meat to the pack and I helped Jinx and Kelpie drag a whole elk carcass along with having my arms full of meat and the 21 other members of the pack did a lot as well. Some of them carried whole carcasses by themselves, Everest was one of those wolves. After spending the rest of the day doing that everyone was exhausted so we all went to bed as soon as it got dark. Once the sun rose everyone was up except for the lazy bones, Dakota. It took a while of us trying to wake him up before he actually got up. I swear that dude could sleep through a tornado. When we all left the hut most wolves and humans were gone. One thing I noticed is Everest was gone but Lena was just sitting looking into the horizon. I got very confused as to why she was all alone so I walked to her. "Hey Lena where's Everest and the other wolves all I see is some females wandering around." "Oh hey Maddie. Uh yea well we went out to hunt and got ambushed. The only people who were allowed to run was the human females and the weak elders." Lena started balling as soon as she mentioned the ambush. I got really concerned when she said that. "Is Everest out there?" she didn't even look at me or say anything so I immediately knew. This pack didn't even have time to gather allies and Allusion's pack has more in numbers compared to them and take out the elders...that puts them at 18 members and like 4 human males. My heart immediately sank. "Madelyn.. They may be tough and strong but they are out numbered, 18 to 28 plus however many human males they have, that's at least 10 more wolves prying on them and if they had any allies they would put them even further ahead." I was just kind of stuck in place I didn't know what to say or if to say anything. Kelpie's POV After they quit talking to each other the tears were everywhere. Lena was balling and Madelyn was silently crying. But in hearing this I decided to go out and try to help one more wolf may not matter but it'd help at least a little. So I turned away from them and started running "Kelpie where are you going?" "To help at least a little bit." "No Kelpie-" Lena's voice got cut off by gasps as a big strong female leapt for me snarling and biting. Dakota's POV Just as Lena was about to warn Kelpie of something a female wolf leapt out of the hillside forest. As soon as I saw this Jinx took control almost instantaneously. When Jinx was almost to Kelpie another wolf leapt out. They had been waiting for any others wolves to help or get food to cut them off and try to eliminate the pack. This is what they wanted. But Jinx with a strong kick threw the unknown wolf off and raced to help Kelpie. He rushed into the female to throw her off to buy Kelpie a breather but that wouldn't last for long as the two wolves just tried to get to them even more. Jinx and Kelpie fought as hard as they could. While looking over I saw the battlefield wolves still fighting and starting to retreat as they figured out the tactics of the other pack. It wasn't even the meadow pack they sent their allies down here to weaken this pack before the real fighting started. We were able to run from these wolves after a bit back into the pack territory to start rounding up the people and the few elders to make sure they would be as safe as possible. Soon after the foreign pack started closing in and the Mountain pack still tried to hold their best preparing for another round of attacks. Kelpie's POV Jinx and I got everyone in camp to be together in this small protective circle. But as Jinx looked behind to make sure the people were okay Madelyn was on where to be found. I immediately started to worry. What of they got her? What is she ran away and we couldn't find her? What had happened? But as hard as it was I had to not focus on her and focus on the attacks' to come. After a couple minutes if them looking to see the best striking opportunity they started to attack again and I saw Everest and wat looked to be the alpha going for each other. I started running towards Everest as he was now pinned and clung to that wolf's neck biting as hard as I could trying to wait for Everest to get up, but I couldn't hold from the snapping jaws forever as the wolf flung me off and instead of focusing on Everest who I couldn't see anymore he started coming after me. As I was getting ready to prepare a horn blew and the foreign wolves started returning to the forest. All of the mountain wolves were hurt and every female and elder there was rushed to start helping all the wolves. That's when I saw a limp, still body. I ran towards it recognizing the fur and my fear came true. Everest was lying there in the snow with his face covered in blood. I knew he was dead as soon as I saw him. The warrior had fallen. I rested my head on his as a way to say goodbye even though I didn't know that well. I gave a short but meaningful howl and walked to the place the ambush started. There were more bodies. from the 18 wolves fighting 9 lives were lost and from the 8 male humans who were fighting 5 lives were lost. And from the wolves and humans that survived none would be left unscarred.  Lena's POV As soon as I realized that Everest wasn't with the wolves that survived I started looking for him. I held onto hope thinking as though he maybe was just looking for any other survivors but my hope and heart shattered at the same time as soon as I saw Everest's limp body. I ran up to him crying and begging him to come back and as I buried my head into his fur I knew he would never return to be my wolf, partner and friend. That now a piece of my heart will always be missing. That now I would always have to live with this haunting image of him. I sat there and cried I couldn't bring myself to get up I couldn't bring myself to believe he was actually never going to wake up.
