I Got Fired

1900 Words
When Hale stepped into the conference room, she carried herself with a confidence she had every reason to be proud of. Her shoulders were straight. Her steps were steady. The navy suit she wore gave her an air of both elegance and professionalism. A faint smile touched her lips, but it wasn't an ordinary smile. There was pride hidden beneath it. She took her seat, opened her laptop, and glanced around the room. Not everyone had arrived yet. There were still a few minutes before the meeting began. Using the time wisely, she checked her emails. Hours had passed since sunrise, yet the excitement she had felt ever since receiving Adnan Koroğlu's response still pulsed through her veins. As the door opened, people gradually filled the room and took their seats. The atmosphere immediately became more serious when Mr. Kenan entered. The meeting officially began. Financial reports were reviewed first. Then came discussions about client acquisitions and losses. Hale listened patiently. Quietly. Taking notes. Analyzing everything. But a voice inside her kept insisting that the time had come. Now it was her turn. She cleared her throat softly and spoke. “Mr. Kenan, dear colleagues,” she began, her voice calm but firm. “Yesterday, I held the meeting I had arranged with Mr. Adnan Koroğlu. This morning, I received a positive response. He informed me that from now on, his company will work exclusively with us for European road transportation.” Silence filled the room. For a brief moment, nobody spoke. Several surprised glances darted around the table. One of the most shocked people was Ahmet. Leaning forward slightly, he raised his brows. “Hale, you never mentioned any of this to us.” Hale tilted her head and smiled. “I don't like talking about things before they're finalized, Ahmet. An agreement this important should only be discussed once it's done.” Ahmet's voice sharpened. Wrapped in unmistakable jealousy. “You met directly with Mr. Adnan?” Hale met his gaze. A teasing smile appeared on her lips. “Of course I did. Arranging the meeting wasn't easy, but I always find a way when I want something.” She paused. “You know that too, don't you?” A faint smile appeared on Mr. Kenan's face. But there was tension gathering behind his eyes. Still, the rest of the meeting went well. Congratulations followed. Praise followed. Once again, Hale found herself being recognized for her success. Yet something inside her remained restless. When the meeting ended, she gathered her notes and headed directly toward Mr. Kenan's office. There was determination inside her. And impatience. She knocked. “May I come in?” “Of course, Hale. Come in.” But the moment she entered, her good mood disappeared. Ahmet was sitting across from her boss. A smug grin stretched across his face. As if he had already won. “I was actually on my way out,” Hale said calmly. “I have a meeting with Mr. Salih. But before that, I wanted to share some details regarding the Koroğlu account. Do you have a moment?” Mr. Kenan smiled. “Of course, Hale.” Then he added, “But first, we have some news.” Ahmet immediately jumped in. “Be proud of me, Hale. I'm the new Marketing Director.” For a moment, Hale froze. Shock. Disbelief. Disappointment. All of it surged through her at once. Yet on the outside, it appeared only as a few seconds of silence. “Excuse me?” Her voice was barely above a whisper. “Did I hear that correctly?” Mr. Kenan answered. “Yes. We've appointed Ahmet as the new Marketing Director. It's a decision we've been considering for quite some time.” Hale stared at him. Then laughed once. A humorless laugh. “Really, Mr. Kenan?” Her voice became sharper. Stronger. “In the last year, I've brought in two and a half times more clients than he has. I've cleaned up every disaster he created. And you promoted him?” The expression on Mr. Kenan's face hardened immediately. “Where exactly do you get the right to question my decisions? This is incredibly disrespectful.” “I'm only stating facts.” Hale didn't back down. Not even a step. “And yes, I know exactly where the line is. Everyone in this room knows that every word I've said is true.” She looked directly into his eyes. “From now on, you're free to keep making as many stupid decisions as you like.” A cold smile appeared on her lips. “But I'm done.” Mr. Kenan raised his voice. “Watch your words. You'll regret this.” For the first time, anger flashed openly in Hale's eyes. “No.” She shook her head. “You'll be the one who regrets it.” Her voice was steady. Deadly calm. “Those clients aren't loyal to this company.” She pointed to herself. “They're loyal to me.” A long silence followed. Then she spoke the words she'd been holding back. “I quit.” She took a breath. “And I wish both you and your incompetent new director the best of luck.” Her eyes shifted briefly toward Ahmet. “However much success that leaves you with.” “YOU'RE FIRED!” Mr. Kenan shouted. The office walls practically shook. But Hale was already turning toward the door. Without even looking back, she answered calmly, “I was leaving anyway.” Her hand settled on the handle. Then she glanced over her shoulder one final time. “But this departure will be the loss of something you'll never get back.” The door slammed shut behind her. She walked directly to Accounting. Completed the necessary paperwork. Collected her belongings. Then left the building with her head held high. A chapter of her life had ended. But for Hale— this ending felt suspiciously like the beginning of something much bigger. The moment she got into her car, she took a deep breath. Rain trickled down the windows. Outside, the city moved on as if nothing had happened. Inside, Hale sat in silence. Her eyes watched the rain. Her thoughts wandered through everything that had happened. She remembered the morning. Breakfast with Cihangir. The excitement she'd carried into the meeting. The confidence. The hope. And then the disappointment. An entire day had passed. Yet the storm inside her refused to settle. Night had already fallen. Streetlights shimmered against the rain-soaked roads. Hale quietly wiped away the tears sliding down her cheeks. Everything felt stolen. Months of effort. Countless sleepless nights. Files. Meetings. Calculations. Plans. It all felt erased in a single moment. There was a painful knot in her throat. She was hurt. Exhausted. Angry. And somewhere deep inside, she was still fighting against the invisible prejudice she had spent years confronting. The doorbell rang. The sound startled her. For a moment, she didn't move. Then she slowly walked toward the door. Her eyes were still wet. When she opened it and saw Cihangir standing there, she froze. “Cihangir?” He didn't bother hiding the concern in his eyes. “Why haven't you answered your phone for hours?” His gaze moved across her face. The red tip of her nose. The damp lashes. The sadness she couldn't hide. His voice immediately softened. “What happened?” A pause. “Did someone do something to you?” That was all it took. The dam finally broke. Fresh tears spilled down Hale's cheeks. Without saying another word, she threw her arms around his neck. “I lost.” Her voice trembled. Cihangir didn't understand immediately. But he didn't need to. He simply held her. One hand settled against her back. The other moved gently through her hair. Patient. Steady. Quiet. Just there. He guided her inside. Closed the door behind them. Then led her toward the couch. Hale sat down slowly. The tears had eased, but the exhaustion remained written across her face. “Feeling any better?” he asked softly. She nodded. Barely. Without another word, Cihangir went into the kitchen and returned with a glass of water. “Here.” He handed it to her. “Drink.” She took a few small sips. Then exhaled slowly. Cihangir leaned forward slightly. “What happened, beautiful?” His voice was gentle. “What did you lose?” Hale lowered her gaze. “My job.” For a second, Cihangir looked surprised. Then a small wave of relief passed through him. At least she wasn't physically hurt. But he also knew how important her work was to her. This wasn't a small loss. “How?” His brows furrowed. “What happened?” Everything she'd been holding inside finally came pouring out. “All because he's a man.” The words came sharp and bitter. “My achievements didn't matter.” Her voice shook. “That i***t got the promotion.” Tears returned. “I spent a year fixing every mistake he made.” Her breathing became uneven. “I cleaned up every mess he created.” Another tear slid down her cheek. “And he got promoted.” Her fists clenched. “And because I refused to stay quiet…” Her voice broke. “Because I refused to let them silence me…” She laughed bitterly. “I got fired.” Then she looked up at him. Desperate. Heartbroken. “Do you know what makes this worse?” Cihangir remained silent. “I landed Koroğlu.” Her voice cracked. “I landed Koroğlu.” She buried her face against his shoulder again. “All men are horrible.” The words came out as a broken whisper. Cihangir had no idea what to say. He didn't want to hurt her. Didn't want to argue. But one word caught his attention. One name. Koroğlu. He gently pulled back enough to look at her. “Koroğlu?” Hale nodded. Her eyes were still full of tears. “Yes.” She wiped at them angrily. “Adnan Koroğlu.” A bitter laugh escaped her. “You have no idea how hard it was to arrange that meeting.” Her voice softened. “I spent months trying.” She shook her head. “So many calls.” “So many doors.” “So much effort.” Then she smiled sadly. “But I did it.” A pause. “It was a multi-million-dollar deal.” Her eyes filled again. “And they ignored even that.” Cihangir fell silent. Something stirred in the back of his mind. The name wasn't unfamiliar. Not at all. But now wasn't the time. For the moment, only one thing mattered. Her. He pulled her closer again. His fingers moved gently through her hair. And softly, near her ear, he whispered, “You were right.” His voice was calm. Certain. “You did more than anyone could have asked.” He pressed a kiss against the top of her head. “You're strong, Hale.” Another pause. “And the fact that they couldn't control you?” His arms tightened slightly around her. “That's proof of exactly who you are.” He rested his forehead lightly against hers. “And I'm here.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “I'm not going anywhere.”
