Chapter 5: Kidnapped?

686 Words
I awoke to the gentle hum of an engine and the rhythmic thud of tires on pavement. Disoriented, I blinked against the dim lights on the dash illuminating the cab, trying to piece together how I ended up here. The last thing I remembered was the park, the footprint, and then... darkness. Panic surged through me as I realized I was in the backseat of a moving car, the world outside a blur of passing scenery. We must be going at least 100 mph; I couldn’t make out anything beyond the vehicle. My heart raced as I scanned the interior, searching for any clue about where I was being taken or who was driving. The driver, a shadowy figure, remained silent, their face obscured in the dim light. It must be nighttime; it’s so dark outside, I thought. But wait, I left early in the morning for my hike—how could it be dark already? I shifted slightly, testing the door handle, but it wouldn't budge. My mind raced with questions and possibilities, each more unsettling than the last. "Sir, she's awake," the man in the driver's seat said, his voice cutting through the haze of my confusion. "No, not yet. We're not there yet," a familiar voice replied, making my body shudder. Before I could process the recognition, a sharp pang in my leg pulled me back into the darkness, the world slipping away once more. The last thing I could hear was the low hum of the engine. I awoke once again to the soft rustle of silk sheets under my body and the faint scent of jasmine in the air. Disoriented, I blinked away the lingering drowsiness, and my vision gradually sharpened, bringing my surroundings into focus. The room was opulent, with high ceilings, ornate furnishings, and a chandelier casting delicate patterns across the walls. Panic flickered at the edges of my mind as I struggled to remember how I ended up here. The last thing I recalled was the park, the footprint, and then... darkness. But wait, the car. I was in a car at one point, the soreness of my leg began to radiate, reminding me that I was also drugged. I sat up slowly, shifting my body to place my feet on the ground while taking in the lavish details of the room—the plush carpet beneath my feet, the elegant artwork adorning the walls, and the soft glow of a fireplace crackling in the corner. Despite the luxurious setting, a sense of unease settled over me. The silk sheets felt cool against my skin, a stark contrast to the warmth of the fire. I had no idea where I was or who had brought me here. My heart raced as I considered the possibilities, each more unsettling than the last. Was this connected to the wolf, the note, or something else entirely? I needed to find answers. As I rose from the bed and made my way to the window, I couldn’t help but wonder. If I was being kidnapped for something sinister, why am I being kept in such a beautiful place? My focus shifted when I opened the curtains, hoping to find some sense of location, some familiarity to where I’d been taken. My breath hitched as I took in the view. I was isolated. Wherever I was, it was on some kind of beach, surrounded by trees, with the moon glistening off the water. The serene beauty of my location contrasted sharply with the turmoil inside me, deepening the unease in my gut. I was so absorbed in the view that I didn't hear the door open. The sound of a man clearing his throat jolted me, and I spun quickly on my heels to face him, my breath hitching. A deep chuckle escaped him lips as he watched my startled reaction. "It's you!" I squeaked, recognizing the man standing before me. He was the same man I had collided with on the sidewalk only a day prior. Just then, a sly smile spread across his face as he replied, "Yes, ma'am, it's me."
