Chapter 2: Dazed and Confused

495 Words
The birds awoke me with their songs, their cheerful melodies weaving through the morning air. Sunlight crept through my curtains, casting warm, golden patterns across the room. The gentle glow and the lively chorus outside seemed worlds away from the dark, unsettling events of the previous night, offering a sense of peace and calamity. I rise out of bed with a soft groan and make my way toward the shower. As the steam envelops me, I can't help but think about the events of last night. It must have been a nightmare, I thought, trying to convince myself that the fear and confusion were nothing more than a figment of my imagination. The warm water cascades over me, washing away the remnants of sleep, yet the memory of the wolf lingers, refusing to fade completely. Pressing the thoughts out of my mind, I finish cleaning myself, wrap up in a towel, and check my phone. It's 9:27. "s**t," I thought. I'm late for work. A surge of urgency replaces the lingering unease as I rush to get dressed, my morning routine now a blur of hurried movements. All I can focus on is making it to the café. I grab my purse, throwing my keys and phone inside, and sprint out the door. As I maneuver through the crowd on the sidewalk, I suddenly collide with what feels like a brick wall. Or so I thought. Stumbling back, I look up to find a tall, solid figure standing before me, their expression a mix of surprise and amusement. "Oh god, I'm sorry," I say, my entire face turning red with embarrassment. A deep chuckle escapes the mystery man's throat as he replies, "You're okay, ma'am. Better get going now." His warm smile and easy demeanor help ease my flustered state, and with a quick nod, I continue on my way, the encounter lingering in my mind as I hurry toward the café. I finally arrive at 9:39, which is impressive considering it usually takes me 45 minutes to power walk to work, and I managed to run here in 12. I grab my visor and apron, tossing my things onto the break room table before heading out to the counter. Our regulars are here, enjoying their brunch and shots of espresso, gossiping about the latest news in town. The familiar hum of conversation and the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee create a sense of normalcy, grounding me after the whirlwind start to my day. The remainder of my shift passes by relatively quickly and without a hitch. As I start to close down the café, I remember I have plans with my best friend tonight. We were going to hit a few of the local clubs and let loose after finals. The thought of dancing and unwinding offers a welcome distraction from the strange events of the past day. With renewed energy, I finish my closing tasks, eager to enjoy my night with Sam.
