Chapter 2

685 Words
I stared at Kevin in disbelief. The thing I had been desperately holding together inside me shattered completely at that moment. Stella carefully stepped out from behind Kevin, her voice soft and trembling. "I'm sorry, May. I didn't know Kevin was planning to propose to you today. I was just really scared, and I didn't know who else to turn to. I never thought he'd leave you alone on a day like this." Tears streamed down her face instantly. "Please don't be mad. Don't let this come between you two because of me. I can leave right now if you want." I let out a cold laugh. "Stella, stop acting like the victim." She froze for a second, then cried even harder. "May!" Kevin's voice turned sharp with annoyance. He stepped in front of me, subtly pulling Stella farther behind him like he was shielding her. Then he grabbed my hand gently, sounding exhausted. "Stella and I grew up together. Our families go way back. Are you really going to blow this up just because I helped her out with something? Once the drama dies down, I'll give you a proper proposal again, okay?" Kevin still thought he could smooth everything over with a few sweet words, just like he had every time before. What he forgot was that no matter how intense love is, it can still be worn down by disappointment after disappointment. And nobody waits forever. "I don't need that anymore, Kevin. Let's break up." I yanked my hand away and turned to leave. But suddenly, hurried footsteps came from behind me. A strong force pulled me backward, and I crashed into Kevin's chest. "Can you stop doing this? Seven years together, and you can really throw it all away just like that?" Right then, Stella suddenly clutched her stomach and cried out. "Kevin... my belly hurts." Without even thinking, Kevin let go of me immediately. As he held Stella in his arms and walked past me, he paused for half a second. "Wait for me at home. I'll settle Stella down and come back to you." The second Kevin finished speaking, the panic and concern in his eyes became impossible to hide. He hurried toward the garage with Stella clinging weakly to him. My trembling hands curled tightly into fists as my eyes met Stella's. She smiled at me. A smug, victorious smile. My chest hurt so badly I could barely breathe. My nails dug into my palms hard enough to leave bloody marks. Kevin was right about one thing. The only reason I kept giving in was because I couldn’t let go of the seven years we shared… or the few beautiful moments buried somewhere in all the pain. "Kevin." He stopped just before getting into the car and looked back at me, slightly irritated. "What now?" I looked at him quietly. Long enough that impatience started creeping onto his face. Then I let out a cold laugh. "I hope you never regret the choice you made today." Something about the way I looked at him clearly bothered him. Kevin's expression darkened immediately. "May, if you want to keep making a scene, go ahead. If you want to break up, fine, I'll give you that too. Just don't come crying back to me later." I laughed bitterly to myself. How deeply had I loved him for him to believe that no matter what he did to me, I would always stay there waiting like an i***t? I watched Kevin get into the car and leave without a second thought. Then I turned and walked back into his house. After seven years together, there were barely any traces of me there. Because of his celebrity status, Kevin rarely let me stay overnight. The few times I did were only because he needed me to, or because there was no other option. I packed up the few things that belonged to me and left without looking back. Only then did I realize something. Every corner of that house was filled with traces of Stella. Thinking about it now, it was honestly pathetic.
