The following week was a whirlwind for me. Between intensive research sessions, client meetings, and sleepless nights, I could barely had time to breathe, let alone process recent encounter with the great Jairus Levi. Yet, the experience left an indelible mark on me, one that subtly influenced and entered my thoughts from time to time.
The day after our meeting, I received both an email and text from Jairus. It was brief but promising: “I’ve arranged for a consultation with Dr. Laura Villar, an expert in environmental law, for Friday morning at 10 AM. Please confirm your availability so I could inform her, thank you.”
My excitement was palpable. It's a Sy! well-known family in the society. Because of too much excitement, my hair clip detached.
Dr. Sy was renowned for her work on environmental protection cases and her insights could be invaluable. She quickly responds with Jairus sending a confirmation with Dr. Sy's appearance. I spent the next few days preparing for the consultation, diving deeper into legal precedents and gathering questions to make the most of my meeting with her.
Friday arrived with an overcast sky and a chill in the air, signaling the beginning of the fall season.
I dressed myself carefully in a professional navy suit and a cream blouse, my hair was neatly pulled back into a bun. I felt a flutter of anticipation as I walked through the lobby of Jairus' company once more, heading towards the conference room where Dr. Sy would be waiting - and I could really feel the tormenting excitement.
The conference room was expansive and tastefully decorated, with large windows offering a panoramic view of the city. As I entered, I was greeted by a woman in early forties, with an aura of calm authority. Dr. Laura Sy had a warm smile, short auburn hair, and an approachable demeanor that immediately put myself at ease.
“Ms. Salazar, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” She said, extending her hand with her wide smile.
“Dr. Sy, nice to meeting you too! Thank you so much for meeting with me,” I replied, shaking her hand.
We both took our seats around a large glass table, and never wasted no time in diving into the specifics of the case after we exchange some random questions. As I laid out the details, Dr. Sy listened attentively, which makes me feel blue - all of a sudden, I felt so smart. Occasionally jotting down notes and asking clarifying questions.
“This nonprofit’s work is commendable,” Dr. Sy said, after she had finished her overview. “But the corporation you’re up against is formidable. Their legal team will be highly skilled and well-funded - I bet you know that part You’ll need to be meticulous in gathering evidence and presenting your case." she said.
I kept on nodding at her advises and listen attentively as well.
she even added," I know that Jairus and his family are powerful but we would also need a powerful team - and think you're powerful enough to make this case close in favor of your team."
I nodded, her mind is already racing with strategies and guidance. “I understand Ma'am, you mentioned that you might be able to provide guidance on how to strengthen our position. What do you suggest that we could done on our part?" I asked politely.
Ms. Sy leaned back in her chair, her gaze was so thoughtful. “First, you need to focus on building a solid case around the environmental impact. This involves not just documenting the damage but also proving its correlation with the corporation’s actions. Engaging experts to testify on the environmental impact and potential long-term effects will be crucial.”
I wanted to shout out of my lungs because of the giddyness I felt. I feel like...she's up here - she's very mindful and oozing with so so much professionalism like it's a natural trait of her.
I took notes furiously, absorbing every piece of advise.
Dr. Sy continued, offering insights into gathering expert testimonies, navigating legal loopholes, and presenting evidence in a compelling manner.
The consultation was thorough and immensely helpful, that I feel like I don't to stop the meeting we have scheduled, but I have thought this isn't the only thing she has on her plates.
As we both bid our kind goodbyes, she remained very posture and professional. And I can conclude that I left the meeting with renewed determination.
The next few days were consumed by preparations. I have coordinated with environmental scientists, reviewed case law further to make sure I don't miss something important. I worked closely with the team at the firm to refine wifh legal strategies. Amid the frenzy, I found myself thinking about Jairus Alcantara.
This isn't only the time he invaded my mind, he's invading it unknowingly and this is happening frequently. His genuine interest and support had been unexpected since we had that short meeting in his clean, spacious and very modern office and I couldn’t help but wonder about his personal life and motivations.
On Tuesday, I received another email from Alcantara's Enterprises. This one was an invitation: “Mr. Alcantara would like to invite you to a charity gala he is hosting this Saturday evening. It will be an opportunity to meet other supporters and discuss the case further. Please let us know if you can attend.” I read.
I hesitated for a moment. The idea of attending a high-profile event where she would likely be surrounded by influential figures was both exhilarating and intimidating. But I knew that networking and forging connections could be crucial for the case. With a deep breath, I replied affirmatively.
Saturday evening arrived with a crisp of breeze air.
I prepared myself for the gala with a mix of excitement and nerves. I just wore a sleek, navy evening gown that complemented my professional demeanor, and just styled my hair in soft waves. I don't usually wear necklace as I feel like I was being tied up and felt like I was gonna be out of breath. But this time, I tried to wear the necklace given by my dad on my 18th birthday before - this necklace is somehow lenghty than the normal necklace so I feel like I can wear it longer.
I examined my entire face and outfit once more, ensuring that I appeared polished and presentable, knowing the significance of the event I was about to attend in an hour.
After I stepped out of the house and ride into a cab, I couldn’t help but feel a flutter of anticipation and at the same time nervousness.
I just realized that I don’t really know many people at the gala, or rather, I don’t know anyone except for the great Jairus Alcantara and his secretary. I guess there will be some influential families and other lawyers there. But somehow, I wish I knew someone there, or else I might feel out of place.
I was into the said venue of the Gala after some time.
The gala was held at an opulent ballroom in one of the city’s most prestigious hotels. The space was adorned with elegant chandeliers, and the floor was covered in pristine marble. Soft classical music played in the background as guests mingled, and are all well-dressed in their finest attire.
As I entered the ballroom, my eyes were much wider as the usual as I took in the grandeur of the event. I was greeted by a host who directed her to the main area when I was asked by my name. It was on the email sent to me to go to the receptionist and just tell my name and the staff would know what to do. I was weirded out since other guests have to provide the invitation envelope and mines different from them, for a second I think I was a gate casher of the event but the receptionists eyes were alerted when I said my name, and she politely guided me where Jairus Alcantara was already mingling with the other guests. His presence was unmistakable—he exuded confidence and charisma as he spoke with a group of people.
He just really screams...dominance. And I like it.
As I approached, His gaze met mine, and he offered a warm smile, his face was lit-up than usual. “Adinah, I’m glad you make it.” he said with his manly voice, Oh I could hear again melodies for the way he used my second name. I smiled back trying to maintain my image and posture.
“Thank you for inviting me, Mr. Alcantara for this grandeur gala,” I replied, I tried to make my voice becomes steady as I could despite the nerves. “The event is truly impressive.” I even added by looking around.
He gestured me to join him. “Please, call me Jairus. Last name basis is too formal and oldy. Let's just drop our honorifics." he said, which I seconded. He's been reminding me of that since day one. "Anyways, let me introduce you to some of our supporters and partners. They might be able to offer valuable insights into the case.” he added.
I found myself momentarily speechless as he pulled me close, his hands gently guiding my waist with a careful touch as he led me through the way. One by one, he introduced me to influential families and key supporters, some of whom were partners in the company, even philanthropists and invited environmentalist was there.
The personalities I encountered were overwhelming; I had only expected to simply attend an event. Sharing stories, smiling, and shaking hands felt exhausting, yet the connections formed were valuable.
“Let’s take a break; you look tired already. Let’s get you something to eat,” Jairus whispered in my ear. For five seconds, I was stunned, his sudden closeness sents shiver down my spine. I smiled and nodded, I was hungry for sure so I didn't hesitate to just get dragged by him to get food.
But all in all, conversations were engaging and very smart.
I'm extremely quite famished and crave a more substantial meal, but I feel hesitant and embarrassed about it. I'm concerned that others might perceive me as gluttonous, I almost laugh at the thought of me eating a lot on this grand gala. Seems like I’ll just hold it off until I get home later to indulge properly and satisfy my appetite.
"You know you can eat a lot here, don't hold yourself Adinah, make yourself comfortable here." he said on my back and then I saw him pick a food, trying to even show it off to me that he's eating. I shake my head refusing while smiling, I heard him laughed and - goshh even his laugh was so manly yet so sexy.
At some point after we eat, the event goes well, there was even an auction of three items. I was shocked as well for the prices that keep on increasing for the auction. Feels like I could set-up already a business of my own for the money thrown. After the auction, Jairus led me to a quieter corner of the ballroom, away from the crowd. “By far, you're handling the case well,” he said, his tone was sincere. “I’ve heard positive feedback about your dedication and expertise.” he even added.
I felt a flush of pride. “Thank you. I’m just trying my best for the nonprofit and the community they serve.”
"It’s refreshing to see someone so committed to making a difference.” he then nodded thrice.
Before I could even respond, a waitress approached with a tray of drinks. Alexander took a glass of champagne and offered one to me. "Do you drink?" he asked. "I do..."
“How's the meeting with Dr. Sy?”
“Oh that, we had a very productive consultation,” I said, he then handed me the other glass of champagne and I gladly accepted it from him. "Thanks," I whispered making sure he can still hear it.
"Very much welcome, Lady..."
“Her advice has been invaluable.”
“That’s good to hear,” Jairus said, taking a sip of his drink. “She's one of the best in her field. She’s helped many organizations navigate complex legal battles.”
I smiled, feeling a sense of camaraderie with him. “I’m grateful for the connections and support. It means a lot, especially given how challenging this case is.” I replied with sincere attitude.
As the evening continued, I found myself increasingly at ease in Jairus' presence. The conversation flowed effortlessly, and I couldn’t help but be drawn to his genuine warmth and thoughtful demeanor.
As the night drew to a close, he escorted me to the exit when I said I had to get home already, “I hope you enjoyed the evening,” he said, his gaze lingering on mine.
“I did, thank you, this is such a wonderful experience for me. ” I replied, feeling a twinge of regret that the night was ending. “I appreciate all the support and the opportunity to meet so many incredible people.”
He then smiled, “You’re making a real impact. I’m looking forward to seeing how the case unfolds. And if you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out." he reminded.
As I stepped out into the cool night air, I felt a mixture of satisfaction and curiosity. The gala had been more than just a social event—it was been an opportunity to connect with influential individuals and to strengthen my professional network. But part from that was the interactions I had made with Jairus this night- feels like we know each other for quite some time. It had left me with a sense of intrigue about the man behind the public persona.
My thoughts were filled on my way home with the promise of what lay ahead. The case was challenging, but with the support I'm getting and the connections I had made so far, I felt more determined than ever to see it through to a successful conclusion.
