Chapter 15Absence. He didn't know how else to describe it. Complete absence. I'm still here, aren't I? he wondered, trying to distinguish his body from his surroundings. A great black other. If the wall inside the cone had seemed to be a void, with its featureless, unreflective, frictionless surface, this was worse. This was nothing. Further, he couldn't tell where he ended, where he began. The demarcations separating his body from his surroundings no longer existed. He felt for his face, and didn't find it. He groped for his leg with his hand, same result. He shouted just for the joy of hearing his own voice, and heard not a word. If a tree falls in the forest …he thought inanely.
