Chapter 2:
"Make sure you don't trip over your own feet tonight, Elena. You need to keep in mind that you are representing the Thorne name, not a charity ward."
Julian’s voice was a whip as he reached over in the back of the limousine, adjusting the high collar of my dress with a rough, impatient tug. He had hand-picked this outfit for me: a drab, high-necked lace gown in a dusty rose that made me look like a mourning widow. It was a calculated move. He wanted me to look invisible, a dull background character that wouldn't distract from Sarah, who he knew would be waiting for us at the gala in something far more attention grabbing.
"I will do my best not to embarrass your 'strategic partner,' Julian," I replied, my tone flat. I didn't look at him, keeping my eyes on the passing lights of the city. My heart was pounding, but it wasn't out of fear. It was the due to the thrill of the hunt.
When we eventually arrived at the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza, the air was filled with the scent of lilies and the hushed, predatory, judging eyes of the city's elite.
Julian didn't bother to hold my hand or offer his arm. The moment we cleared the threshold, he made a beeline for the bar where Sarah was already waiting. She was a vision in a blood-red silk dress. The dress cut so low it was scandalous, and meticulously draped around her neck were the emeralds that belonged to Julian’s mother.
"Elena, darling," Sarah purred as we approached, her eyes glinting with a triumphant malice. "You look so... modest tonight. Doesn't she look modest, Julian?"
"She looks exactly how she should...modest," Julian muttered, already taking a glass of scotch from a passing waiter. He didn't even look at me.
The whispers around us started like a rising tide, rustling through the crowd of socialites. "There she is. The placeholder wife."
"She isn't even flamboyantly dressed for the occasion."
"Did you hear the rumor? The divorce papers were filed at 5:00 PM today."
"Poor thing doesn't even know she’s been replaced."
" I feel so sorry for her. I heard she is an helpless orphan who has no dime in her name."
I stood there, playing the role of the humiliated wife to perfection. I let my shoulders slump slightly. I kept my eyes cast down, playing the victim with so much precaution. I waited for the moment Julian would reach his peak of arrogance.
It didn't take long. Halfway through the event, Julian stepped onto the stage for the keynote address. The spotlight caught the sharp, handsome angles of his face, making him look every bit the untouchable king of the financial world. He reached out a hand, and for a split second, the crowd thought he was calling for his wife.
But it was Sarah who stepped up beside him, her hand sliding possessively into his.
"Tonight is about the future of the Thorne Group," Julian’s voice boomed through the speakers. "And the future is built on the Vance-Thorne merger. In order to celebrate this union, I am making a personal announcement to clear the path for our growth. As of tonight, Elena and I are separated. My engagement to Sarah Vance will be made official by morning. Thank you all for coming to celebrate with us."
The room went deathly silent for a heartbeat before erupting into the blinding, frantic flashes of a hundred cameras. I saw the security guards at the edge of the room moving towards me, ready to quietly escort the discarded woman out the back door before I could make a scene.
"You are making a catastrophic mistake, Julian," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried a crystalline clarity that seemed to stop the cameras mid-flash. "This will be the biggest mistake of your life."
I didn't wait for the guards to reach me. I walked toward the stage, my head held high, the drab lace of my dress suddenly feeling like a royal shroud.
I bypassed the guards and stepped up to the second microphone. Julian’s face went from triumphant to livid in a matter of seconds.
"Elena, what are you trying to do? Get off the stage," he hissed, his hand gripping the podium so hard his knuckles turned white. "Don't make this uglier than it has to be, don't create a scene only to end up embarrassing your already embarrassed self."
"Oh, this is going to get much uglier than you expected," I said, leaning into the mic. "You see, Julian, you didn't just divorce a wife tonight. You just defaulted on your largest creditor. You think the Vance family you are merging with holds the power? My Uncle, Arthur has been playing you, feeding your brains with delusions. The Blackwood trust owns his assets, and as of ten minutes ago, I have revoked his standing."
The guests murmured, breaking into circles.
" What is she talking about?"
"Has she been playing Julian the whole time? Maybe she's just bluffing and trying to conceal her embarrassment."
I watched the guests for a few minutes, a smile spreading across my face.
I pulled my burner phone from my clutch and held it up to the microphone. "Grandfather? This placeholder is now done playing house. Execute the hostile takeover."
A voice crackled through the ballroom speakers: one low, gravelly, and instantly recognizable as Silas Blackwood, the man who had the power to crash the market with a single phone call. "With pleasure, my darling Elena. Tell Mr. Thorne to enjoy his last hour of luxury. We are taking it all, everything he has worked for. Tell him it's a reward for his 'loyalty'."
Julian’s face drained of color as the room dissolved into absolute chaos. He reached for me, but I stepped back, a cold, satisfied smile finally breaking across my face. "Check your emails, Julian. You are not just a renowned bachelor. You are broke."
