The Boardroom Coup

Chapter 5: "Where is the Chairperson? We were supposed to start this meeting fifteen minutes ago! What exactly is going on?" Julian’s voice boomed through the executive floor, tight with a frantic edge he was clearly struggling to mask. I stood just outside the heavy mahogany doors of the Thorne Group boardroom, smoothing the lapel of my white power suit. The fabric used felt like armor, a stark, pristine contrast to the dusty rose lace Julian had forced me to wear just twelve hours ago. Beside me, Theo Sterling stood with his hands casually slipped in his pockets, his presence a silent, looming threat that seemed to make the very air in the hallway feel heavy. "He is not coming, Julian," I said, pushing the double doors open without a second of hesitation. " The room went deathly still. Every head at the long conference table turned towards me. Sarah, who was sitting in what used to be my honorary chair at the foot of the table, stood up so fast that her designer heels skidded sharply against the floor. "You! How dare you show your face here after all that has happened?" Sarah sneered, her voice shrill and trembling with a mix of fury and fear. "Julian, tell security to get this crazy woman out of here before she ruins the signing like she ruined my engagement party! This is a private executive session and she is not allowed to be here!" "The security guards work for the one person who pays their salary, Sarah," I said, walking to the head of the table with a predatory slowness. I didn't wait for an invitation, and I certainly didn't look for Julian’s permission. I sat directly in the Chairman’s high-backed leather chair. "And the last I checked: as of six o'clock this morning, that person in question is me." Julian looked like he had seen a ghost, or perhaps a demon. "Elena, stop this childishness. Stop this madness and move on." "I know you are embarrassed. I know you're hurt because of the divorce and how it came to uou. But this is global commerce. You have no standing here, no shares, and no right to breathe the air in this room. Get out before I have you arrested for trespassing." "Sorry to burst your bubbles, but I have the majority standing, actually," I replied, tossing a thick, leather-bound folder onto the mahogany table. It slid across the polished surface, coming to a dead stop right in front of Julian’s shaking hands. "What is this?" Julian asked. "While you were busy celebrating your 'engagement' last night, my trust completed a hostile buyout of the Thorne Group’s primary debt holders. So, as we speak, I have purchased fifty-one percent of your outstanding loans. And as your primary creditor, I am officially calling them in. Every single cent. With immediate effects." Julian’s CFO, a man who had looked down his nose at me for years, frantically checked his laptop. His face turned a ghostly, translucent white. "Sir...we are in great trouble. She is right. The funds have been moved through the Blackwood clearing house. We are in technical default. We... we don't have the liquid cash to cover a fraction of this." Julian turned to me, his sapphire eyes wide and wild, the arrogance finally stripping away to reveal the panicked boy underneath. "Are you really trying to ruin me because of a divorce? Must we be together, Elena? Have you forgotten that I gave you a life, Elena?! I gave you my name when you were nothing! I shielded you!" "You gave me a gilded cage and a diamond anklet meant for my sister. Do I need to thank you for that?" I replied, standing up and leaning over the table until our faces were inches apart. The scent of his fear was more intoxicating than any perfume. "And as for your name, Julian, you can keep it. It is about to be synonymous with the biggest bankruptcy in the history of this city and I don't want to have anything to do with it." Julian let out a guttural roar of frustration, his hand reaching across the table as if to grab my throat in a final, desperate act of violence. But before his fingers could even graze my skin, Theo Sterling’s hand caught his wrist midair. The sound of Julian’s bone creaking under Theo’s grip filled the room, letting out gasps from the board members. "Don't touch her, Julian. I wouldn't do that if I were you," Theo said, his voice a low, lethal growl that made even the board members flinch. "You just lost your company, your house, and your reputation. Don't lose your life, too. That is the only thing you have left. Now, I would suggest you get out of this chair and out of this building before I have you dragged out like the lowlife crawling maggot you sre. Right in front of the press you love so much." I looked at Sarah, who was now trembling so hard her pearl necklace was rattling. "Oh, and Sarah? I'd take that ring off if I were you. The jeweler just called. The payment was declined." Julian looked at me one last time, a broken, defeated man, but as he turned to leave, my phone chimed with a high-priority alert. I glanced at the screen and felt my blood run cold. "Wait," I called out, my voice stopping Julian at the door. He turned, a flicker of hope in his eyes that I was about to show mercy. I looked from the phone to Theo, then back to Julian. "It seems your father-in-law didn't go to jail quietly, Julian. He just leaked the 'Black Box' files. Files that prove you weren't just cheating on me, you were laundering money through my trust for the last three years." The sound of police sirens began to wail in the street below, growing louder by the second. I leaned back in the Chairperson's chair, crossing my legs. "It looks like you won't be needing that room in the penthouse after all. The state provides housing for people like you."
