Violet's POV
I was still ogling the unbelievably handsome guy who had spoken up for me when he walked to me and stood beside me. I had no idea what to say or how to even respond. I was even shocked at the fact that he decided to save me from leaving by partnering with me.
But why?
“Are you just you to stand there and keep looking at me? Choose a weapon to fight me with,” the guy's voice washed over me. His voice was firm and intimidating, but not unkind. But for some reason, it sent chills through me.
I straightened up immediately, snapping back to my senses and realizing that I'd been gaping at him like a fool. A rush of embarrassment hit me, making my face redden. I mumbled incoherently under my breath in response.
For some reason, I felt shaky around him. He possessed a powerful aura that made me almost certain that there was more to him.
And who was he anyway? I had never seen him at school. If something this good-looking was at Wysteria, I would have known by now because every girl would be talking about him.
I was still thinking of how to respond to the stranger when the professor cut in, his eyes narrowing at the strange guy.
“What makes you think you can just barge into my class? Who are you? I've never seen you around here?” Gamma Mason barked.
Unlike the rest of us, the new guy did not seem scared of the professor. He had an almost…lazy expression on his face as he turned to the professor. “I am a new student at Wysteria Supernatural Academy. I just got transferred here from my old school.”
As he spoke, he took out an identification card from his jacket and handed it to the professor. “My name is Axel Gray.”
The whole class suddenly began to murmur, gushing over his unique name.
Axel. It was a really nice name, to be fair. And I couldn't help but notice how well the name suited him. So, he was a new student. That made sense since no one had seen him around. Although he was a little arrogant, there was no denying that he was insanely gorgeous.
The professor took the identity card, peered at it briefly before handing it back over to Axel. “Well, welcome to Wysteria Supernatural Academy, Axel. But unfortunately, you cannot join my class. I already have the number of students agreed upon between the school and I. Violet here is the last student. So–”
The professor was cut off when a student in the crowd raised his hand.
“Yes?”
All eyes turned to the student as he began to speak. “I volunteer to fall out of the class to enable the new guy to join the class, sir.”
The professor looked surprised. “Why would you do that? Aren't you also a new student that just got transferred this semester?”
“Yes, sir, I am. But I don't really like Shifting and Combat. I just joined because everyone was raving about it. Since there's someone who loves it and really wants to join here…” he motioned to Axel. “... I think I should give him a chance instead.”
With nothing left to say, the professor watched as the guy picked up his backpack and walked out, leaving Axel in the class. As I watched all this happen, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. I couldn't shake off the feeling that Axel Gray was no ordinary guy. But I kept my thoughts to myself.
The students continued to murmur among themselves, some of the girls stealing glances at Axel. Finally, the professor sighed.
“Alright. Since everyone has been settled now, pair up with the partner you chose and get familiar with them. If you're going to be partners, you definitely need to get to know more about them. That is what today's class is about. From the next class, training will commence.”
Everyone began to pair off, and I turned to Axel to ask him a question when I realized that he was nowhere to be found. My face scrunched in confusion, I craned my neck to see if he had melted into the crowd. But after walking through the hall, I realized he was gone.
For some reason, this annoyed me. Why save me if he wasn't even interested in talking to me? Was his move earlier just some sort of bravado? He seemed like a very arrogant person.
Giving up, I picked up my bag and left the class. My mind drifted back to my wolf, Clara, and I felt a wave of sadness hit me. I couldn't believe I had lost her. It was probably the weight of the rejection that did it. I did not want to say that I regretted rejecting Ethan. But was it worth losing my wolf?
I couldn't answer that.
But this would cause more problems for me. My body was already very weak, and it was my wolf giving me the strength to face certain things. I couldn't add being wolfless to my weak body. That would make things so much worse.
“Clara, please, if you are there, answer me,” I called out to my wolf again. I was met with silence.
With a heavy heart, I walked down the hall. As I passed, students glared at me. I knew that most of them had seen the video.
“How dare this measly little thing reject our Alpha?”
“Stupid b***h. She should be dead!”
“Since an orphan girl like her was adopted into the royal family, she must have started dreaming that she was one of the royals. She should be punished for this.”
“Look at her. She's not even fit to be a Luna. And she had the guts to reject Alpha Ethan?!”
They continued to rain insults on me as I passed. It was getting too much. I tried to block out their hurtful words to no avail. I just walked faster until I got to my locker. I unlocked the safe to take out my backpack and was just locking it back up when all of a sudden I felt the bag being yanked out of my grip.
“Hey!” I yelled, turning around to grab my bag. Barbara and her minions stared at me and laughed, keeping the bag out of my reach.
“Barbara, return my bag.”
“Or what?” She sneered.
As I tried to grab it, she tossed it to another girl. My face reddened in anger. I leaped at the other girl to grab it from her, but she tossed it to yet another girl before I could.
“I guess you are weaker now. you're wolfless. Come get your stupid bag.”
I tried to grab it, but she tossed it to the girl behind me.
Like this, they continued to toss and turn me.
“Hey, orphan girl, over here!” one of them yelled.
I turned to her, watching as she dangled the bag in front of me.
“Give it back!” I charged at her. My fingers almost reached it. But she tossed it to another person.
“Where is all the strength you had when you rejected the Alpha?” Barbara sneered as the bag got to her. My hand grasped the bag, but she kicked me away and tossed it to another girl.
They all burst out laughing.
I wanted to scream at them and tell them the truth.
“Do you even know the reason why I rejected him?!”
“Why?” they asked, pushing my head roughly.
I was about to blurt everything out, but then I thought of Ethan's mother. Before she died, she made me promise to look after her son. And Luna Vivienne was good to me.
“Never mind. Just give me my bag.”
Barbara faced me. “You won't get it that easily. If you want it so badly, get on your knees and plead. Maybe I'll hand it over.”
“And if I don't?”
“Well, then you can kiss your bag goodbye.”
And I know you won't do that. Your receipt and student identity card are inside, right?”
Fear gripped me. If I lost those two things, it would be difficult to get them back. But there was no way I was going to kneel in front of Barbara.
“I can't kneel down, Barbara. Just give me my bag.”
She shrugged. “Okay. Then deal with the consequences.” She then motioned to her minions, and they all walked away.
I stood and watched them go. That bag was so important to me. If it were before, Ethan would help me get it back. But now he hated me.
Quickly, I rushed after Barbara. Maybe I could beg her or negotiate a way out. If I lost this bag now, I had no means of paying for a new student identification card.
As I reached where Barbara and her friends were, I was surprised to see Axel, the stranger from before, standing in front of me.
“Hand the backpack over,” he said coldly.
Barbara looked shaken. She quickly did as she was told and submitted the bag to me. He then walked towards me and dropped the bag in front of me.
“Stop being so damn weak and stand up for yourself. This is not how you were brought up, Violet. You can do better.”
Before I could thank him, he walked away.
It was at that point that I realized what he was saying.
'This is not how you were brought up…'
Why did his statement sound like he knew me from somewhere?
