Chapter 8 DETECTIVE ISABELLA Savino is a tough detective. She was sitting at her desk reviewing a cold case. Father Terrence Conors was assistant pastor at Holy Cross Church on Niagara Street. It was a popular Catholic church with many West Side Italians. Father Conors was young, handsome, and wedded to his god. He was well-liked, and his masses were some of the best attended in the Catholic Diocese. One Sunday afternoon after mass Conors was in the rectory, a 1890s house next to the church. His office was a sizeable well-furnished room with dark wood paneling and a massive stone fireplace. The priest was working at his large wooden desk.
