SCARLET
Dad called us all into the living room and explained everything that had happened. He didn’t know what this woman wanted, but he knew she was up to something.
I swallowed my pride and rolled up my sleeves.
“Are you sure she isn’t a vampire, dad? Cause well…” I pointed out the prick marks on my arm, nearly healed now.
Everyone immediately crowded around me.
“I got a bite like that too,” Rose said, still slightly dazed from what happened.
“Are you sure she did this?” Aunt Christa asked.
“She attacked me when I was walking to school yesterday, I’m dead sure it was her, because she did it again. She somehow knocked both of us out” I gestured to the half-drunken Rose.
“She’s a witch” dad said, “A witch that is threatening our family”
I’ve never heard of witches. I knew of the 5 main supernatural groups: vampires, faires, wizards, shapeshifters and witchdoctors with the side group, werewolves. Were witches more powerful? Were they able to cheat death?
“They use combined powers of many different supernaturals. But their magic practices are ancient and regarded as forbidden nowadays,” Aunt Christa said.
“We still don’t know what she wants with us, she mentioned Kathryn as she left,” dad looked at Violet as he said that.
Suddenly the fact that I was most probably bitten by this strange witch-woman was brushed off.
“But Kathryn was her rival, Eugene. They were very close friends, and rivals in the witching competition. You know this,” Aunt Christa said.
“It wasn’t that… She said she became immortal so that Kathryn didn’t have to”
The room was suddenly silent.
“What’s that supposed to mean?! What did she do to mom?” Rose said, suddenly very defensive.
Dad just shook his head.
I couldn’t deal with all of this now. I knew it was important, but Felix’s words faded back into my head. His name was Felix by the way. I found that out as the other guys got back. It was crazy to me that I never noticed him before. He blended in so well with everything else. The thing that differentiated him from the others was his guitar. Why did he have to go and say that?
Will you be there to watch me from the crowd?
Will I? Well probably if that’s what it will take to get him to play. As much as I’d love to see Rose fail and embarrass herself… The way he looked holding the guitar and strumming it just for me. It was the kind of magic that belonged on a stage, it was the kind of magic that other people needed to witness. So that they could see what I saw when he played So that he would be less of a dream in my mind. So that I’d know he’s real.
I got up and started walking to the stairs.
“Where are you going?” Aunt Christa said with an annoyingly strict tone. I wasn’t even looking at her but I could hear in her voice that her hands were on her hips.
“To my room. It doesn’t seem like I’m much help just sitting here anyways,” I hopped up the stairs and went into my room closing the door behind me. I slid to the floor and sighed.
He’s a human, isn’t he? And I’m carrying on as if he’s the first one I’ve ever seen. What is it about him? Why am I so hooked on him already?
I can’t be thinking these thoughts.
The Council of Supernaturals are basically like the government of beings like us. They make specific rules that apply to supernatruals alone. Vampire and werewolf families have to register themselves, which means that if they live in a specific area they need to notify the Council, so that excessive feeding of humans doesn’t occur. For every thousand humans there are allowed to be a family of five vampires. They control our numbers, how we feed and with which beings we may breed. Vampires are also not allowed to fall in love, marry or breed with humans. Simply for the fact that the vampires would turn the humans and then the ratio of vampires to humans will change drastically.
And now I’m having these thoughts about a human boy.
I mean it’s not like the variety of teen vampire boys are abundant in this town. There’s hardly any in our school. But why a human? I could have fallen for any other supernatural. There are tons of shapeshifters in the school, some wizards too! But it had to be him.
My thoughts are interrupted by the sound of light tapping on my window. I look up and see small stones being thrown against the glass. The sky outside was warm. The colours ranging from a sunset orange to a pastel purple. This was the best time of the day, dusk.
I stood up and opened the window shutters to see a young teen girl standing on the lawn.
“Hey kid get lost!” I yelled.
“Sorry! I was just looking for Violet” she said in a sickeningly sweet voice.
She was looking for Violet? An outsider was looking for her? That’s interesting… And total blackmail material… I smirked to myself.
“Oh… I’ll tell her you stopped by. Run along now” I said and watched her wave and leave.
Violet is in the hugest of trouble right now. She wasn’t just talking to an outsider… I sniffed the air and her scent still present filled my nose.
Violet hasn’t been talking to a human.
