Part IV: The Line She Almost Crossed Christiana did not return to the room that night until very late. When she finally pushed the door open, the others were already asleep. The small space was heavy with tiredness and silence. She moved slowly, careful not to wake anyone, and sat on her mattress without removing her shoes. Her heart still hadn’t settled. Lagos outside kept breathing loudly through the windows horns, distant shouting, generators humming like restless spirits. But inside her, everything felt strangely quiet, like something had gone numb. She kept thinking about the woman’s words. “This is where survival happens.” And worse than that… the feeling that she was expected to become something she didn’t recognize in herself. Hours passed. Just when she thought sleep might finally come, footsteps outside broke the silence. Then voices. Low. Urgent. Controlled. Christiana sat up immediately. Something was wrong. The door opened suddenly, and one of the girls rushed in, breathing hard. “Wake up,” she whispered sharply. “You need to leave. Now.” Christiana blinked, confused. “What? Why?” “There’s trouble,” the girl said quickly. “Police came around. They’re asking questions. People are being taken.” Christiana’s chest tightened instantly. Her mind raced. “Taken… for what?” The girl hesitated. “Just come. Don’t ask now.” Before Christiana could think, she was pulled up and guided outside through a back exit. The night air hit her face like cold water. Everything felt unreal like she was inside a story that was no longer hers to control. People were running in different directions. Shadows. Panic. Confusion. Christiana’s feet moved before her thoughts could catch up. “Where are we going?” she asked again, breathless. “Anywhere safe,” the girl replied. “Just don’t stop.” They ran through narrow paths, cutting behind buildings, avoiding lights. Christiana’s heart pounded so hard she thought it would break through her chest. At some point, she stopped running. “I can’t" she gasped. “I can’t do this anymore.” The girl grabbed her arm tightly. “If you stop, you get caught. If you get caught, you don’t come back the same.” That sentence froze her more than fear ever could. They kept moving until they reached a quieter street far from the chaos. Only then did they slow down. Christiana bent slightly, trying to catch her breath. Her whole body was shaking. For the first time since she left home, she felt truly lost. not just physically, but inside herself. The girl looked at her gently now. “You’re not built for that life yet,” she said softly. “But if you stay here, it will change you anyway.” Christiana looked up slowly. “Then what am I supposed to do?” The girl didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she pointed down the road. “Decide before Lagos decides for you.” Christiana stood still. The words echoed in her mind long after the girl disappeared into the dark. For a long time, she just stood there alone, breathing, thinking. She had left home searching for freedom. But now she was standing at the edge of something far more dangerous than she had ever imagined: A life that could either break her completely… Or force her to become someone she never planned to be. And for the first time, Christiana realized not every road has a way back. Next page: part v
