Once we neared the outskirts of the city, I took over the wheel. As we slowly rolled into downtown, I cut the lights so that we might slip past anyone looking for trouble. The streets were nearly empty, only a handful of folks walking down the sidewalk. It was startling. All of them seemed in a trance, walking mindlessly, faces void of expression. It iced my bones. I thought of the patients at Haven Hospital. Walking and breathing but no light upstairs. When we turned onto Bourbon Street, my heart squeezed. Only a block ahead, in plain sight, stood three regulators heavily armed. Their weapons were like nothing I’d ever seen.
