RESPITE By the skin of my derrière, we made it out of the city limits without a hitch. Well, not entirely. The left tire whined against the road as it grew flat. The turbulent ride burdened me with dread. Regardless, we were pointed straight for Aidan’s place. Hell or high water, I wasn’t giving up. I kept telling myself that we had only a little farther to go. Sally spoke of Aidan owning a historical mansion down on the river road. She described it as a shroud of trees lining the drive that led to a huge white plantation. I reckoned that I’d stay with the Cajun until he was strong enough to fend for himself and then I think we should separate. But first things first, we both needed food and drink and sleep.
