Power Couple, Poison Press

1000 Words
Ella received the first true fall-out from the Kensington Gala even before her Uber could reach her apartment. Her phone buzzed with a notification from the celebrity gossip site: EXCLUSIVE: Sterling CEO & Mystery Fiancée Set Gala Ablaze! Below the headline was the photo. It was undeniably stunning. Liam, impossibly handsome and commanding in his tuxedo, gazing down at Ella with an expression that could, in the forgiving lens of a camera, be mistaken for smoldering intensity. Ella, radiant in emerald silk, looked up at him, her smile luminous, her hand resting possessively on his chest where she’d placed it during the confrontation with Isabella. The caption screamed: Liam Sterling & Marketing Maven Ella Rossi: New York’s Hottest Power Couple! Sparks Fly at Kensington Gala! Sparks? Ella thought, bile rising in her throat. The "spark" had been Isabella Moretti’s poisoned dagger, and her own desperate counter-thrust. The photo was pure fiction, a masterclass in deceptive angles and wishful thinking. She scrolled down. The article breathlessly recounted their "electric chemistry," Liam’s "protective hold," and Ella’s "grace under fire" when facing the "jealous ex." It painted a picture of a whirlwind office romance culminating in a fairytale engagement. Comments flooded in: OMG they look AMAZING together! #SterlingRossi #PowerCoupleGoals Is that the woman from the Parker campaign? She’s brilliant! Get it, girl! Moretti looked PISSED. Karma’s a b***h, Isabella! Okay but SERIOUSLY? He’s engaged to his ASSISTANT? Gold digger alert! That dress! That look! I ship it so hard! #FakeItTillYouMakeIt? Nah, this is REAL. The hashtag #SterlingRossi was already trending locally. Ella felt dizzy. Overnight, she’d become public property. Her professional identity – the strategist, the MBA, the Parker & Lowe success – was being swallowed by the glittering monster of "Liam Sterling’s Fiancée." The next day at Sterling Dynamics was surreal. Janice waved a knowing smile with a pile of urgent messages- none of which had to do with the Harrington strategy, but rather, from the fashion magazines and gossip columnists of this world, requesting interviews with "the woman who tamed Liam Sterling." Like a hush falling in the bullpen as she walked past, it was then followed by a wave of whispers and stares ranging from awe to outright hostility. Derek Finch's glare could melt steel. His office felt like a sanctuary, but the illusion wasted no time getting bilged when Liam strode in without knocking, holding a tablet with the trending hashtag on display. He looked… pleased? Annoyed? It was hard to tell because he always bore an ice-prince demeanor. "Well," he stated, placing the tablet upon her desk, facing her. "We are viral." Ella didn't look up from the Harrington logistics report she was desperately trying to focus on. "So I see. Mission accomplished, I suppose? Charles Harrington called Janice first thing. He is thrilled by the news and wants a double date with him and his wife next week." "Good," said Liam, a certain note of satisfaction in his voice. "The exposure works to our advantage. Much better than what I would have thought." Ella finally looked up, her narrowed eyes. "My professional reputation is now 'the woman who tamed Liam Sterling.' My inbox is full of requests for my 'engagement story,' not my marketing insights. Is that working in my favor?" Liam met her gaze, unfazed. "Perception is leverage, Ella. The 'power couple' narrative adds weight to our Harrington pitch. It humanizes Sterling Dynamics. It makes you… relatable. Even aspirational." He tapped the tablet screen. "This publicity is worth millions in advertising. Embrace it. Use it." "Use it?" Ella stood, voice tight. "I'm being reduced to an accessory, Liam! A shiny bauble on your arm! I've worked ten years building my credentials, and overnight I am 'Liam Sterling's Fiancée'! How is that helping me? "'Because,' Liam countered, stepping closer, his voice low, 'by the time this is over, and you will be Ella Rossi, Vice President—a lot of publicity will have etched your name onto the consciousness of the industry. You will not be simply competent; you will be iconic: the woman who grabbed Sterling Dynamics' largest account and its CEO.' A cold, calculative flare ignited in his eyes. 'Think bigger, Ella. This is not only about Harrington. This is about creating your brand along with Sterling's.'" He said chillingly reasonable things. Which, by all accounts, they were; in a ghoulish, mercenary way. The resultant viral fame was a double-edged sword, and yet it was doing wonders to her profile. She hated it: the degradation, the invasion, the way Derek Finch smirked at her in the hallways. But no denying its power. "Fine," she bit off. "We'll use it. But I control the story. I give the interviews. I choose the outlets. I decide what part of this... fairytale gets told. No more candid shots hijacking the narrative." She then pointed at the tablet. "That stops today. Rule Four: No surprises." Liam studied her for a long moment, then nodded curtly. "Agreed. All media requests will be routed through Janice. You will have final approval on them." He turned to leave, pausing at the door. "And Ella? Wear something iconic to the Harrington dinner. We've got an image to uphold." After he left, Ella sank back into her chair and stared at the viral picture on the tablet. Liam's face, caught in that deceptive moment of 'smoldering intensity,' gazed back at her. Power Couple. The name seemed heavy, even dangerous. An exquisitely mirrored cage, it afforded unimaginable reach while threatening to wipe out everything she was beneath the glittering surface. It was an high-stakes game she was playing, publicly slithering alongside a viper; if any step were to go wrong, if any glimmer of genuine emotion were to breach the act, she and the rigged, glittering facade of #SterlingRossi would come crashing down below into a demise, taking every bit of her erased career as well. The viral frenzy was, in actuality, not mere publicity. Rather, it was the tightening of the first invisible chains.
