That Is Why I Love Tomorrow

1028 Words
My mum never mentioned the Forbes to me, she always avoided questions about my dad or where I came from. She said that my dad died, and that's all she ever told me, I always suspected she was hiding things from me, but I felt it was something bad which is why she kept it from me. Now, I didn't know what to think as we got into the car. After telling me the results were out, suddenly, I was scared of what it might be, if I was related to them by blood, would that mean my mother kept secrets from me? And why? There must be a reason. If it comes out negative, they will be disappointed, why am I even worried about their disappointment? My thoughts were running wild, I needed something to keep me calm. I put down the car windows and took in some fresh air, I wished Reina was here with me, she always had a way of making everything better. "Hello?" I put my old iPhone to my ear,I could only take calls and texts with it and I know it is Reina, probably calling to check on me. "Are you there yet?" She asked, her voice deadpan. Probably trying to make sure I don’t worry, but I can almost see her but her lower lip in concentration. "No, still on the road," I replied, just as deadpan. "Why couldn't they tell you the result on the phone?” She said the very thing I could not say. "I don't know." I sighed. "I wish I could get someone to take over my shift here so I'll be with you." She quietly said and I realised she had to be at work. So I quickly rounded up the discussion. "Thanks, I'll update you when I get back." I said "That will be tomorrow morning, remember it's a night shift for me.” She worked at a local twenty four hour diner. The tips were great and with an day of work there she could pay off certain smaller bills "Yeah." It was already 7 pm, I wondered how this night would go and what time I would get back home today. "Later then." She ended the call just as the driver parked the sleek vehicle and opened the door for me. "Thanks," I said politely and stepped out. I stood there watching the beautiful lighting of the house in the rapidly darkening day while I waited for someone to take me inside, I didn't have the password after all. "Good evening ma'am." Someone greeted me, I turned and recognized him as the guy of yesterday who led the crew to retrieve me, a very annoying experience. "Good evening." I followed him inside, "Please forgive us. You will have to wait for a little longer this time. Mr. Forbes left in a hurry to the hospital, he should be back as soon as possible." He took me to the living room where I met a really pale-looking lady, she looked good but her skin was too white. "Hello, You're Carina, right?" She changed from her lying position to a seating position when she saw me. "Yeah, hello, good evening." I greeted and stood there awkwardly. "Please sit," She sent me a small smile. "I'm Katherine, Nicholas's mother." I don't know how to reply to that so I just smiled and nodded after taking a seat. I thought Nicholas had said his mother was too busy to have time for him while growing up. "I heard they took your DNA samples to be tested." She said, "Yeah, Nicholas asked me to come here. He didn’t give me a hint of what the results might be.” I said, finally laying my exasperation on someone. "You look a lot like your mother, she was a beauty.” I gave her a weird look in return. So,the woman knew my mother too, that's if I'm even the Carina they are looking for. "Thanks. But we are not sure of that yet." I might look like the woman they knew but I might not be that child. "Some others will be head over heels when they get the opportunity to find out if they were from this family, but you..." She stared at me, "You are calm and different, I like that." "I don't want to get my hopes up, it will only hurt." I said. Though I desperately want to belong somewhere, with someone, as a part of someone’s family. It would hurt not to be part of Forbes. Being a Hammond for so long but unable to get in hurt me and it’s the only reason why I’m tolerating this game of back and forth going on here. I want to be part of a family. "Nick!” The lady stood up and went to hug her son who had just stepped in, he must have stepped in the rain for a bit because his blond hair was slightly wet. "Mum." Was his lukewarm response that made me frown deeply. I would give the entire universe and its inhabitants to have my mom hug me again. "How did it go?” She asked him, as though she didn’t feel the way he just treated her. "Grandma woke up saying that she had a dream just as she was about to give up and let go of life." He took a seat looking distressed. "What dream?” At this point, I stood up to follow their conversation properly. "She said her sons told her to come back." I'm guessing he was referring to his dad and mine. "According to grandma they told her that they left two gifts for her, one is me and one is about to be found, I guess that Carina is about to be found, Mum." "So she's not dying anymore?" His mom’s question made me want to laugh out loud, but the truth had to be asked. "If she sees Carina, she would have a lot of positive energy to fight and stay alive. I need my grandma.” He said with a sigh and his head in his palms.
