"That is good news, I can't wait to go back to Asia, business over there is getting better and I need to focus on it.”
I saw a sad emotion run through Nicholas's eyes on hearing what his mother said about going back immediately Nick’s grandma was okay, and now I understood why she was pale, she'd stayed too long out of the sun and was never around because of the family business.
"Carina, let's go and take a look at the result." He stood up and gestured for me to follow him.
I even thought he had seen the result.
We entered a different office from the library Reina and I had been in yesterday, this should be his home office. "Why didn't you check the result yourself and tell me?" I asked, my annoyance bled into my voice.
"I was about to before I received a call that my grandma finally woke up from the coma she was in." He explained, calmly. Looking at my face as he spoke. I let out a harsh sigh, I was spoiling for a fight earlier.
Nicholas gently opened the file and read through the test results, I waited anxiously to hear what it was. Deep down I longed to have a family to call my own, hope was brewing in my heart.
"Carina." He looked at me with a wide smile on his face and a thick tear in his eyes.
I wasn't expecting it, "it's positive." He said and came to hug me.
I don't know why, but I was happy. Loneliness would have probably killed me in the past after losing my mother. I hugged him back and tears kept flowing down my eyes unconsciously. "Damn, now I can tell you all the memories you can't remember about the time we were little. And That's before your mum took you from us."
He was happy, I never knew a man like this would have this side in him. I was delighted too, he seems like a better person right now, l chuckled at my thoughts.
"Somehow, I didn't want it to be positive because that would mean my mum hid a lot of secrets from me, and it would hurt finding the truth. But right now, it doesn't hurt, I'm just happy." I hugged him again and he laughed, I was already feeling a brotherly connection with him.
"Don't blame her, she had her reasons." He said and patted my head.
"Don't do that." I arranged my hair back.
"That's one of the things I loved doing when we were little, and you always said the same thing." I laughed quietly. Life is about to be so good with people that are my own blood.
"How do you even remember all these and I don't?"
"You were just five years old but I was twelve with a better memory." He shrugged as if it was nothing.
"So, now what?" I asked, suddenly shy.
"First we break the news to everyone in the family."
"Everyone you mean...?"
"Our Grandma had four beautiful children. Two boys and two girls. Your dad and mine passed away, which left two women, their husbands, and my mum who is the in-law." He took out his phone and quickly typed something. I looked at what he was doing and then I saw him send a picture he took of me unaware to a group chat saying we've found our Carina.
"Hey! When did you take that picture?"
"The very first day I saw you." He replied calmly and read the replies from everyone in the group, they were all happy and said they should add me to the group.
"They are all coming here, to the family house to see you, everyone should be here by the weekend. I'd like you to be here with me too for a start." He offered.
"You stay alone here?"
"I stayed with grandma, my mum is hardly around and the others are all married with their respective family homes."
"But you all run the family business."
"Yes, it was just your mum that was uninterested. She stayed home mostly to take care of the grandkids, she loved that more than her office and everyone loved her, she was even grandma's best in-law even if she didn't take the family business seriously." I liked the way he talked about my mum.
"If it's okay with you, I'd like to move in with Reina." I knew it was too early to ask but I did either way. I didn’t want to experience this alone. I wanted to have someone with some street smarts and experience with people by my side.
"Anything for you." He said, but I caught the light in his eyes when I mentioned her name, he might have a crush on her.
"It's late, let me show you to your room. You can spend the night over and get packing tomorrow." He said.
"Okay." At least Reina won't be home either so it's not like I'm leaving her.
I followed him to the room up the castle-looking staircase. "This will be your room from now on."
I stepped in and stood in awe for some minutes, the room looked like a queen’s room in a palace, I will see it better tomorrow in a better light, right now let me just sleep and have a good dream, I just hope when I wake up all these will not also be a dream and I'll be back in my to-be ex-husband house with his mother torturing my life.
