CHAPTER 10HENRY POWELL was a man who had never taken life with any degree of seriousness. In some respects he approached brilliance. He had a quick mind and a gambler’s instinct for a sure profit, and it was he who had first concluded that they might do better to remain in Kansas as cattle buyers than to ride back down the long trail to Texas after another herd. But it was the younger brother who weighed the plans, who arranged the bank credits and worked out the deal with the distant stockyards and the railroad. Henry disliked responsibility.
