**Chapter 7: The Quiet Before the Storm**

1565 Words
The campus was unusually quiet as students trickled out of their classrooms, their conversations muted as if the very air carried the weight of an impending storm. But Tia noticed none of it. Her mind was a labyrinth of confusion, her thoughts colliding in a cacophony of discomfort. Her body, once a reliable vessel, now felt alien, as if it had turned against her. A strange, unsettling heat had taken root within her, growing more insistent with each passing moment. She didn’t understand it, couldn’t control it, and that frightened her more than she cared to admit. Behind her, Julia followed at a distance, her heart heavy with worry. Tia’s wolf wasn’t ready, and the consequences of a premature awakening could be devastating. Julia had spent days wrestling with the knowledge she possessed, the secret that loomed over Tia like a dark cloud. Her instincts screamed at her to reach out, to comfort her friend, to ease the turmoil she knew was tearing Tia apart. But the memory of her uncle’s stern command echoed in her mind, keeping her in check. Lucas had been clear—Tia was not to know the truth until her wolf had fully awakened. Any revelation now would only deepen her confusion and amplify her fear. But doing nothing felt like a betrayal. It was torture to watch Tia suffer in silence, to see the pain etched in the lines of her face, the way her hands trembled as she clutched her books, as if they were the only solid thing in a world spinning out of control. Julia could see how lost Tia felt, could sense it in the way she moved—each step seemed to take her further away from the person she had always been. Ignorance of her true nature made her vulnerable, and the thought of anyone—or anything—taking advantage of that vulnerability sent a shiver down Julia’s spine. As they approached the dormitory, Julia could no longer contain her concern. She quickened her pace until she was walking beside Tia. “Are you okay?” she asked softly, her voice tinged with urgency. Tia glanced at her, and for a fleeting moment, Julia saw it—the raw fear, the uncertainty that gnawed at her like a shadow she couldn’t escape. But then, Tia forced a smile, a weak, brittle attempt to mask the storm raging inside her. “Yeah, I’m fine,” she replied, though her tone lacked conviction. “Just…" tired, I guess.” Julia nodded, but she wasn’t fooled. The tension radiating from Tia was palpable, an invisible barrier that kept them both on edge. It tore at Julia to know she couldn’t do more, that she couldn’t tell Tia about the bond that awaited her, about the love that wasn’t a scandal but a sacred connection. But she couldn’t—not yet. As they neared the administration building entrance, an idea sparked in Julia’s mind. If she couldn’t tell Tia the truth, perhaps she could show her. Show her what it meant to be bonded, what it meant to be a mate. In the human world, relationships between teachers and students were often taboo, seen as inappropriate at best and exploitative at worst. But a bond between mates transcended all such boundaries. It was something pure, something eternal. Julia’s thoughts raced as she began to formulate a plan. The first step would be to help Tia feel at ease around Lucas, to help her see him not as an authority figure but as someone capable of offering the kind of unconditional love that was the foundation of any true bond. Slowly, a smile spread across Julia’s face as the pieces of her plan fell into place. But just as the smile took hold, Julia noticed that Tia had changed direction, heading towards the administration office. A knot of unease twisted in her stomach. She quickened her pace, arriving just in time to hear Tia ask the woman behind the desk, “How can I drop out of a course?” Panic flared in Julia’s chest. She had a sinking feeling she knew exactly which course Tia wanted to drop. She had to act fast, to distract her somehow, before it was too late. Without thinking, she blurted out, “I think my boyfriend is going to propose to me.” Tia turned to her, eyes wide with surprise and confusion. “You have a boyfriend? You never mentioned that.” Julia forced a laugh, hoping it sounded natural. “Well, I was going to tell you when we talked about soulmates in our community.” Tia’s brow furrowed, her frustration evident. “So… is this boyfriend your soulmate? Or could he be? Or is he a problem for your soulmate? I’m trying to understand how this works.” Julia glanced at the woman behind the desk, catching her eye and subtly mind-linking her to find something else to do. Then she took Tia by the arm and gently steered her away from the office towards the cafeteria. “Let’s talk about it over lunch,” Julia suggested, keeping her tone light. “There’s a lot to explain.” As they walked, Julia’s mind whirled with the possibilities. She had bought herself some time, but she knew it wouldn’t be long before Tia’s questions became more pointed, more difficult to deflect. She had to find a way to ease Tia’s pain to guide her through the confusion that lay ahead. Because one way or another, Tia would have to face the truth—the truth of who she was and what she meant to Lucas. And when that day came, Julia could only hope that Tia would be ready. The cafeteria was bustling with students, the clatter of trays and hum of conversation providing a welcome distraction. Julia led Tia to a corner table, away from prying eyes and ears. As they sat down, Julia searched for the right words, knowing that this conversation could set the tone for everything that was to come. “So,” Tia began, her voice hesitant. “This boyfriend… is he really going to propose?” Julia smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “No, I just needed to get you out of that office,” she admitted. “But what I said about soulmates… that’s real.” Tia looked at her, confusion mingling with curiosity. “You’ve mentioned it before, but I still don’t really understand. How does it work?” Julia took a deep breath. “In our community, soulmates aren’t just a romantic ideal. They’re a bond, a connection that’s deeper than anything humans can experience. It’s like… finding the other half of your soul." Once you meet them, you just know. And that bond, it’s unbreakable.” Tia’s eyes widened. “But what if… what if the person you’re bonded with doesn’t feel the same way?” Julia shook her head. “That’s the thing about soulmates. The bond is mutual. It’s not something you choose. It’s something that just is. It can be overwhelming, especially if you’re not ready for it.” Tia fell silent, her mind processing Julia’s words. “And… does everyone have a soulmate?” “Not everyone,” Julia replied softly. “But those who do… their lives are never the same once they find each other.” Tia stared down at her hands, the weight of the conversation pressing on her. “It sounds… intense. "” “It is,” Julia agreed. “But it’s also beautiful. It’s a connection that goes beyond love, beyond physical attraction. It’s a merging of souls, a bond that can’t be broken.” Tia looked up at Julia, a flicker of something—hope? Fear?—in her eyes. “And what if you’re not ready for it? What if it’s too much?” Julia reached across the table, taking Tia’s hand in hers. “Then you take it one step at a time. You don’t have to figure it all out at once. But you can’t run from it, Tia. You have to face it.” Tia nodded slowly, her gaze distant as she absorbed Julia’s words. “It’s just… I’m not sure I’m ready for that kind of connection. I don’t even know who I am right now, let alone who I’m supposed to be with.” Julia squeezed her hand. “I know it’s scary, but you’re not alone. You have people who care about you, who will help you through this. And when the time comes, you’ll understand. You’ll feel it.” Tia’s grip tightened on Julia’s hand as if anchoring herself in the storm that was her life. “Thank you, Julia. I… I think I needed to hear that.” Julia smiled, her heart aching with the weight of the secrets she still carried. “Anytime, Tia. You’re stronger than you know. And whatever happens, you’re going to be okay.” As they sat in silence, the cafeteria around them faded into the background, Julia made a silent vow. She would protect Tia, guide her through the confusion and fear, and when the time came, she would make sure Tia knew the truth—that the bond she felt wasn’t something to fear, but something to embrace. Because in the end, the truth would set them both free.
