Jessica's family was the first to adopt Evelyn, but later when Jessica grew to 9 years-old, they sent her back to the orphanage.
If it had been just after being abandoned by Jessica's family, Evelyn might have rushed forward without a care and had a good fight with Jessica, letting them know that she is not someone to be bullied.
But now Evelyn has been abandoned three times, and she no longer has the courage and boldness she had as a child.
She still needs to take care of Andrew, and she must protect herself from getting hurt and keep her school bag and stationery from getting damaged, as she can't afford to buy new ones.
Her courage and bravery were deeply concealed through day-to-day endurance, and now she has to endure.
Jessica is getting cocky.
They brought a bucket of freezing cold water and poured it over Evelyn's head. By the end, Evelyn's whole body were soaked to the skin.
It's late fall and cold.
Evelyn was already underdressed, and was shivering with cold after her clothes were all wet.
"Jessica, why are you always targeting me, what did I ever do to piss you off?"
Jessica laughed scornfully and whispered, leaning in close to Evelyn's ear, "You haven't offended me in any way, I just simply dislike you."
The laughter rang in Evelyn's ears, filled with malice and booing.
Actually, in the eyes of the masses, Evelyn is not very beautiful. She has small freckles on her face, and her deep brown hair coupled with her fair skin often makes her look malnourished.
Since she usually dresses very simply and is rumored to have been abandoned by three families, it is inevitable that people underestimate her.
But this was an ordinary and common girl, yet she performed excellently in every course, and the professors also liked this outstanding girl.
Before Jessica spread the news of Evelyn being abandoned and led the bullying against her, Evelyn also got along very well with her classmates and friends.
The reason that caused Jessica's jealousy was because the boy she liked had once praised Evelyn as a very ambitious and intelligent girl.
Even now, when reminding about the past, Jessica still gets irritated to the point of grinding her teeth.
How could that ugly and vulgar bumpkin be compared to me?
She thought to herself, and lifted a bucket of water with ice cubes once again and poured it over Evelyn.
Evelyn's teeth were chattering from the cold, and white fog continuously puffed out of her nostrils with each breath.
She clenched her teeth and hugged herself tightly until these people left, before she dragged her numb legs and walked out of the cold room slowly.
She thought today's suffering had ended, but when she opened the door, a bucket of icy cold water was poured over her head again.
That was what Jessica and the others secretly placed on the door when they were walking, just to torment Evelyn one more time when she least expected it.
Evelyn slowly walked home step by step.
The walk that usually took her 15 minutes took her a full 35 minutes today.
The clotheswere soaked with cold water, sticking to her skin, wrapping her body tightly.
Fortunately, I've already arrived home, at least I can change into a dry set of clothes before going to work.
Evelyn tried to find joy in sorrows.
She turned off the faucet and looked up at her ordinary reflection in the mirror, taking a deep breath, and heading back to the bedroom to change clothes.
Unfortunately, by the time she had changed her clothes and hurried to the part-time pet store, she was already more than half an hour late.
The pet store owner was sitting in the store with a frosty expression on his face as Evelyn walked in, he started yelling at her.
"Do you want to do this job anymore? If you're late next time, pack up and get the hell out of here!"
With those words, the man left with a curse.
Evelyn waited for him to disappear across the street before she got to work.
She took the puppies out of the cages and carefully bathed and groomed them.
The warm relationship relaxed her a lot, and she felt comfortable with every inch of her very being.
She has a natural instinct.
She is very sensitive to the emotions of animals and can also smell some special smells keenly.
So she always gets the love of animals very easily.
As it was, the bathed puppies gathered around her cheerfully, and Evelyn was so wrapped up in the little ones that she couldn't even spare a hand to clean the cages.
So all she could do was take out pet toys and start playing with them, and in the process sort of do her animal training for the night.
Evelyn threw the ball in her hand, the white fluffy Poodle fetched the ball and brought it back.
But before it could be placed on the ground, it was taken by another Labrador Retriever.
The little ones are having a great time, their emotions are warm and cozy, and Evelyn, who can sense these emotions, feels as comfortable as being soaked in a bathtub filled with warm water.
"Alright, you can play by yourselves, I need to go wash your cages."
A loud explosion erupted on the street outside the pet shop as she is speaking.
The deafening sound startled both her and the small animals.
Evelyn quickly returned the dogs to their cages, closing them behind her before she rushed outside.
What on earth is going on in there?!
On the distant street, a small white figure attracted her full attention under the cover of darkness.
That was a lovely Pomeranian, only its snow-white fur was now disheveled and covered in blood. And in front of it stood two tall, menacing-looking men.
Pierced the silence of the street, their low voices reached Evelyn's ears.
"Seize him now!"
"Be careful, the master has ordered to catch he alive."
He? The Pomeranian?
It looks like these two men are going to catch that little dog and do something to it.
Evelyn, even from this distance, could feel the Pomeranian's emotions -- excitement, belligerence, anger... It was a storm of emotions coursing through her mind, but not a trace of fear.
Overwhelmed by these emotions, Evelyn's core raced as she instinctively rushed towards them, her arms outstretched in front of the two men.
Her stomach was twisting with fear, her voice trembling, but she mustered the courage to say, "You gentlemen...cannot...treat it... this way."
