CHAPTER TWO — Whispers Beneath Holy Walls

(Seraphina’s POV) Grief is supposed to make you weak. That’s what people say, they expected me to break and cry in silence. But standing there, staring at my sister’s lifeless body…I didn’t feel weak, I felt rage and awakening, like something inside me had finally found a purpose. Elara didn’t just die, she was taken. And someone in this place knew exactly how. I didn’t leave her room immediately. I couldn’t. Father Dominic lingered near the door, watching me in that same calm, measured way. Like a man who had practiced grief so well, he no longer needed to feel it. Dominic Hale “Take your time,” he said gently. I almost laughed. There was nothing gentle about this place. When he finally left, the room fell into a suffocating silence. It was just me and Elara left behind. I sat beside her slowly, my fingers brushing over the thin blanket covering her body. “You always did believe in something bigger,” I murmured. My voice sounded strange, like it didn’t belong to me anymore. My gaze drifted again to her wrist, that mark was faint, but it felt wrong. Carefully, I lifted her hand, trying to examine it. It wasn’t random, it wasn't an illness. It looked like— The door creaked open. I dropped her hand instantly. The same young nun stepped inside, closing the door quietly behind her. Her eyes darted toward the hallway before settling on me. I noticed fear in the way she looked. “You shouldn’t be here alone,” she whispered. I leaned back slightly, studying her. “Why?” She hesitated. Her fingers twisting together. “They don’t like it when… when people ask questions.” A slow, cold smile touched my lips. “Good,” I said softly. “I have a lot of them.” She swallowed hard. “You need to leave.” “Not happening.” Her gaze flickered to Elara. And something shifted in her expression, like she was grieving. “You were her sister,” she said quietly. “Yes.” “She talked about you.” That caught me off guard. “…What did she say?” The girl hesitated again. Like even words could get her killed here. “She said you were strong,” she whispered. “That you weren’t afraid of anything.” A bitter laugh escaped me. “She remembered me wrong.” The nun shook her head slightly. “No… she didn’t.” Silence stretched between us.Unspoken things hanging in the air. “What’s your name?” I asked. She looked toward the door again before answering. “…Sister Agnes.” “Alright, Sister Agnes,” I said, my voice lowering, sharpening. “Tell me what really happened to my sister.” Her face went pale. “I can’t.” “You can.” “No,” she shook her head quickly. “You don’t understand. If they find out—” “They already know I’m asking questions,” I cut in. “So you might as well make it worth the risk.” Her breathing quickened with real fear and so was something that looked like desperation. “She found something,” Agnes whispered finally. My heart stills. “What?” “I don’t know exactly,” she said quickly. “But she wasn’t supposed to. After that… things changed.” “How?” “They started watching her more. Calling her in at night.” Her voice trembled. “She tried to act normal, but… she was scared.” A sharp pain twisted in my chest. Elara scared and alone?? “She told me once,” Agnes continued, her voice barely audible now, “that if anything happened to her… it wouldn’t be an accident.” My hands curled into fists. “What did she find?” I pressed. Agnes shook her head again, panic rising. “I don’t know! I swear. But there are places here… places we’re not allowed to go.” “Like?” “The lower halls,” she whispered. “And the east wing. They’re always locked.” In my mind I said Locked doors, secret meetings, Fearful nuns and marks on dead bodies. Yeah, this wasn’t a church, it was something else entirely. “Listen to me,” Agnes said suddenly, grabbing my wrist. “You need to leave before they—” The door opened again, both of us froze. Father Dominic stood there. His gaze moved from Agnes… to her hand gripping my wrist. Silence. Then— “Sister Agnes,” he said calmly. “I don’t recall assigning you to this room.” She let go of me immediately, stepping back. “I—I was just—” “Praying?” he offered gently. She nodded quickly. “Yes, Father.” A small smile touched his lips. But it didn’t reach his eyes. “Then I suggest you continue doing so… elsewhere.” Agnes didn’t need to be told twice. She rushed past him, her head lowered, her body tense. The door closed behind her. And just like that… It was only me and him again. “You seem to have made quite an impression already,” he said, his tone light. “I’m memorable like that.” His gaze lingered on me for a moment longer than necessary, studying me. “Grief affects people in different ways,” he continued. “Some seek answers… even where there are none.” I stepped closer to him. Slowly and deliberately. “And some people,” I said quietly, “get very uncomfortable when questions start pointing in the right direction.” Something flickered in his eyes again. There it was, not fear, but awareness. “We have nothing to hide here, Miss Vale.” “Then you won’t mind if I stay for a while.” That got his attention. His expression didn’t change much. But the air did. “I’m not sure that would be appropriate,” he said carefully. “I think it would,” I replied smoothly. “A grieving sister seeking peace. Redemption, maybe.” I tilted my head slightly. Playing the part. “Isn’t that what this place is for?” Silence stretched between us again. Then— A slow smile curved his lips. “Of course,” he said. And just like that… He agreed. But I saw the warning behind his eyes. He knew. Or at least… he suspected. Good. Because I wasn’t here to be welcomed. I was here to tear this place apart from the inside. I turned back to Elara one last time, my chest tightening as I looked at her. “I’ll fix this,” I whispered under my breath. Then I walked out of the room, not as a grieving sister, but as something else entirely. Something colder and dangerous. And for the first time since I stepped into this cursed place… I felt like I was exactly where I needed to be. Because monsters hide in the dark and I was done being afraid of the dark. I was about to become part of it.
