Chapter 6

William’s vehicle entered the premises of the Rehabilitation Biological Research and Conservation Center, nestled in the remote Shenkeng Mountains. Jonathan, accompanied by several staff members, awaited at the gate. “Welcome, welcome!” Jonathan greeted with a broad smile, his female assistant still by his side. William alighted from the car, casting a sweeping glance around. “The grounds are quite expansive and the scenery is pleasant.” His gaze turned somber as it lingered momentarily on the female assistant. “Mr. Wu, this way please.” Jonathan invited William into the reception room and offered him tea. He took his time sipping the fragrant tea, not in haste to request a tour. Jonathan’s heart raced anxiously as he feigned casual curiosity, “Mr. Wu, with your busy schedule, what brings you to our center for a visit?” “Since Professor Zhang extended the invitation, it would be remiss of me to decline,” William’s sharp eyes flickered with intent. “Moreover, supporting biological conservation shouldn’t be merely a matter of financial contribution. I should visit in person to show my concern, don’t you think?” It appeared there was nothing amiss, perhaps it was just a coincidence. Jonathan hesitated momentarily before regaining his composure. “Indeed, you are right.” Fortunately, it was the fifteenth day of the lunar month yesterday, and members of the werewolf clan would have reverted to their wolf forms. The count’s current appearance as merely a gray wolf should attract no special attention, and having gone nearly two days without nourishment, coupled with the effects of the drug, he would likely lack the strength to revert to human form. Everything was under his control. William merely smiled, withholding any response. Before there was concrete evidence, it was unwise to act rashly. “Mr. Wu, please follow me. I’ll show you around our center.” Jonathan, with a cordial smile, led William through the research center, showcasing the care and medical treatment provided to the animals. “Generally, once an animal has fully recovered and has undergone a period of observation with no issues, it is released back into the wild, allowing it to return to nature.” As William listened to Jonathan’s explanation and surveyed the various animals in their enclosures, his gaze suddenly fixed on a gray wolf. The large gray wolf lay listlessly in its cage, its emerald-green eyes appearing somewhat cloudy. When did she become an exhibit of rare and precious creatures? Ivy cast a resentful glance, her strength waning and unable to move. Was it his imagination? Why did he feel as though the gray wolf in the cage had glanced at him, its eyes seemingly tinged with disdain? Disdain? William couldn’t help but smile at his own thoughts. How could a gray wolf possibly exhibit disdainful eyes? “Mr. Wu, this one is a Formosan clouded leopard…” Noticing William’s attention fixated on the count, Jonathan swiftly seized the opportunity to introduce another rare, nearly endangered animal to divert his attention. Everything here seemed perfectly normal, with no suspicious elements. So, what did that scene he had witnessed mean? Could it be a personal action of the assistant and unrelated to the Rehabilitation Biological Research and Conservation Center? The unfamiliar man might be her only chance; she must find a way to seek his help, perhaps there was a slim chance of escaping this cage, otherwise, she might meet her end here. The gray wolf’s breathing became increasingly labored and noisy. Despite her extreme weakness, Ivy resolved to make a desperate attempt, and the only way to seek help was to transform back into human form. Jonathan, having noticed her unusual condition from the corner of his eye, slightly altered his expression and quickly attempted to divert William’s attention. “Mr. Wu, let us proceed to the outdoor area.” He subtly positioned himself to block William’s view, preventing him from seeing the gray wolf’s abnormality. William nodded in agreement and moved toward the door. Seeing this, Ivy grew anxious, clenching her teeth and exerting all her strength to transform back into human form. Despite the lack of clothing upon transformation, she could not be concerned with that. Before long, the gray wolf’s fur gradually and inch by inch shortened, its padded paws and sharp claws transforming into smooth, fair human hands. Its eyes, brows, nose, and mouth slowly reverted to her originally exquisite features. “Help—me!” She was drenched in sweat, trembling uncontrollably. After expending the last of her strength to cry out, she fell unconscious. At the moment the door closed, William heard a cry for help. “Mr. Wu, we—” Jonathan’s face turned pale, his attempt to conceal the situation already too late. William interrupted his attempt at deception, pointing out the truth. “There is someone inside!” “How—how could that be? You must have misheard. Didn’t you see that there were only injured animals needing care inside? How could there be a person?” Jonathan continued to make desperate excuses. Ignoring his protestations, William nimbly bypassed Jonathan and pushed the door open again. The sight before him left him stunned—what was happening? He recalled that the cage was originally occupied by a large gray wolf, and it was locked. But now… now there was a naked woman lying face down inside, her fair skin and graceful curves causing a stir of emotions. Jonathan’s face shifted from pale to red. The count was… a woman? The female assistant was equally dumbfounded. William composed himself and chose not to delve into the connection between the gray wolf and the unconscious woman. Instead, he turned to the visibly distressed Jonathan and demanded, “Isn’t this woman a human? Why was she kept in a cage?” “Th-this… this… she is not a human, she…” Jonathan struggled to explain. Could he clarify the count’s… er, her true identity? Would William believe him? There was definitely something amiss! “Open the door.” William’s face hardened as he addressed Jonathan directly. “Unlawfully imprisoning someone and restricting their freedom is illegal. Isn’t this a biological research and conservation center? Why is a young woman confined here? I believe you owe me a reasonable explanation.” “Mr. Wu, I can…” He had finally captured the count! He was reluctant to let her go so easily. After releasing her, capturing her again would be far more challenging. The fact that this woman had sought his help was undeniable; aside from other issues, he needed to get her out of here for her safety. William’s cold reiteration left no room for negotiation. “Open the door.” Left with no choice, Jonathan produced a key and unlocked the cage door. William removed his suit jacket, entered the cage, and covered the unconscious Ivy with it before carrying her out. “Professor Zhang, I await your explanation.” With that, he quickly carried the unconscious Ivy out of the research center and towards the parked vehicle. “Mr. Wu, this woman is not human; she is…” Jonathan’s regret was palpable. He should have dealt with her sooner. A werewolf was to be exterminated. The driver’s eyes widened in shock as he opened the back door of the car for his employer. How did a visit to a biological research and conservation center result in him carrying out a naked woman? William settled her in the back seat of the car, then sat himself and draped his suit jacket over her. “Is she a ghost?” he mockingly asked as he closed the door. “No, she’s a monster!” Jonathan growled. William had no interest in hearing more and instructed the driver to proceed. After the car had traveled some distance, the driver finally spoke. “Sir, why did you bring out a naked woman?” “She was imprisoned by Jonathan at the research center and called for my help, so I brought her out,” William explained, though he had not found the count, it confirmed Jonathan’s illegal actions, regardless of his reasons. “And… why was she naked?” The driver’s gaze avoided being indiscreet. “God knows,” William shrugged. “Sir, should we head directly to the hospital?” At the hospital, he would likely need to clarify her origins and the reasons for her state, which would be troublesome. Moreover, the most important issue—he did not even know who she was! “Let’s go home first and get a doctor to examine her.” Furthermore, he was yet to understand how a large gray wolf could transform into a delicate young woman. Transformation? How could that be? Wolves couldn’t turn into humans. William shook his head with a smile. Then, he reconsidered and suppressed his smile. The room, though spacious, had clear furnishings and only one entrance and exit. Could it be… He glanced unintentionally at the unconscious woman, her hair no longer covering her face, and realized with shock—she was the singer from the Sad Hotel! She… was a woman?
