As Max stepped out of the office, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the school courtyard. Waiting just outside, Jessica and James rushed toward him, their faces tense with concern and anticipation. They had been pacing anxiously for the past ten minutes, clearly on edge.
“Max, what happened?” Jessica asked first, her voice quick and strained, eyes scanning his face for answers.
Max exhaled slowly, adjusting the strap of his backpack and glancing over his shoulder before speaking. “It was an agent. Someone from an organization.”
“An agent?” James echoed, brows knitting together in worry. “What kind of agent? Are we in trouble?”
Max shook his head, though the tightness in his expression betrayed lingering tension. “Not exactly. She wasn’t here to arrest me or anything. She came to ask questions—about what we pulled off at the Five Star King Hotel.”
Jessica gasped softly. “You told her?”
“I didn’t have to,” Max replied with a dry chuckle. “She already knew. Said Kyle is looking for me. Personally.”
Jessica’s eyes widened in fear. “Oh no… Kyle? The Kyle Carter? The ruthless tycoon who practically runs five great companies, and underground empire?”
“That’s him,” Max confirmed, his tone grim.
Jessica’s voice dropped to a frightened whisper. “We’re in trouble. Serious trouble. We messed with someone we were never supposed to cross, now he wants to deal with us to take revenge for his son.”
“Hey, calm down,” Max said, trying to sound reassuring. “The agent said her organization would protect us. She even offered me a position. Said they’ve been watching me for a while, impressed with my skills.”
James blinked. “Wait, seriously? She wants you to join them?”
Max shrugged, a faint smirk playing on his lips. “Apparently, i just hacked into the hotel surveillance system just to expose Selina and Kyle, never knew it will attention of the whatever agency.”
Jessica stepped closer, her expression still anxious. “But did you say yes?”
“Of course not,” Max said immediately, as though the answer should be obvious.
“Why not?” James asked, clearly surprised. “That sounds like the safest move right now. Protection, resources... maybe even some real answers.”
Max looked down at the ground for a moment, his voice quieting. “Because my mom told me something before she died. She said, ‘Don’t trust anyone. Not even the ones who smile.’ It’s stuck with me ever since.”
Jessica frowned. “So you don’t trust us either?”
Max looked up quickly, his eyes sincere. “Of course I trust you. You guys are different—you’re my best friends. I’d never doubt you.”
Jessica hesitated, her gaze softening. But something flickered behind her eyes—something fragile.
“So… I’m just a friend to you?” she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper. The words carried a strange weight, and Max froze for a second, caught off guard.
“What do you m—” Max began, but before he could finish, a sharp voice interrupted from behind them.
“Max. You and your friends—my office. Now,” Ms. Michelle, their class teacher, said firmly, standing at the entrance of the hallway with a stern look on her face.
“Yes, ma’am,” they responded in unison, their voices subdued.
The trio followed her silently down the hallway, their footsteps echoing off the tiled floor. Max could feel Jessica’s unspoken question hanging heavily in the air, and it gnawed at the back of his mind. But now wasn’t the time to address it.
Inside Ms. Michelle’s office, the air was thick with tension. The walls were lined with books, awards, and old computer monitors, relics of past tech fairs and competitions. She closed the door behind them and turned with her arms folded.
Her eyes locked on Max. “I had a visitor today. Someone I doubt was on any official school list.”
Max didn’t reply. He knew who she meant.
“She said she’s from an organization. Sounded serious. She said you’re not just a curious student—you’re someone important now.”
Max shifted uncomfortably. Jessica and James glanced at each other but said nothing.
“I didn’t invite her,” Max muttered.
“I know you didn’t,” Ms. Michelle replied. “But you three need to understand what you’ve gotten yourselves into. This isn’t a game anymore. What you did at the Five Star King Hotel wasn’t just a prank—it was a digital intrusion into a highly secure, highly dangerous network. And now Kyle Carter knows your name and want to catch you to take revenge for George, and you know the government got no say in this.”
“I never meant for this to happen,” Max said quietly.
“Intentions don’t matter anymore,” Ms. Michelle said. “Consequences do.”
Jessica stepped forward. “What should we do?”
Ms. Michelle studied them for a long moment, then sighed. “Stay alert. Trust each other. And Max—if that agent offers help again, don’t be so quick to turn her away. You may not have the luxury of choice for long.”
There was a knock at the door—sharp, urgent. Ms. Michelle turned but before she could answer, the school's fire alarm began to wail.
Red emergency lights flickered in the hallway. The three friends looked at each other in confusion and dread.
“That’s not a drill,” Ms. Michelle said, her voice low and serious.
Max’s phone buzzed. He pulled it out and saw an unknown message flashing on the screen: “They’re coming. MOVE.”
His heart pounded. He shoved the phone into his pocket and looked at Jessica and James.
“We need to go,” he said, voice calm but firm.
“Where?” James asked, panic rising in his voice.
“Anywhere but here,” Max replied. “We’ll figure it out later. Right now—we run.”
And without another word, they bolted into the corridor, hearts racing, shadows chasing them through the flashing lights.
---
They burst into the hallway, feet pounding against the polished tiles as the fire alarm blared overhead. The flashing red lights painted everything in jagged shadows, disorienting and chaotic.
“Where are we even going?” James shouted over the noise.
“The back gate!” Max yelled. “It’s usually unlocked during emergencies!”
They tore around a corner, narrowly avoiding a cluster of confused students and teachers flooding out of classrooms. Max led the way, cutting through the crowd with calculated speed. He knew every shortcut in the school. He had mapped the whole place during late-night boredom months ago.
Jessica kept pace, her breathing sharp but controlled. James, though clearly panicked, didn’t fall behind and also Ms Michelle who practically following them.
“What if this isn’t just an alarm?” Jessica asked, dodging a teacher who tried to corral them toward the main exit.
Max didn’t respond. He couldn’t. He didn’t have the answer she was looking for. All he had was a gut feeling and a warning text from someone who knew things—someone watching.
They reached the rear corridor and pushed through the old steel door that led behind the gymnasium. Cool air hit them like a slap to the face. The chaos inside was replaced by eerie quiet, broken only by the distant alarm and the rustling of trees.
Then Max’s phone buzzed again. Another message.
“Van—north end of the parking lot. 3 minutes.”
Max spun toward the others. “We’re not heading home. Follow me.”
“Wait—what van? Who sent that?” James asked, but Max was already moving again.
They sprinted across the cracked pavement toward the north end of the lot. A white cargo van was parked by the maintenance shed, engine idling. As they approached, the passenger door opened.
Inside sat a woman in her late twenties, clad in dark tactical gear. She was the same agent Max had spoken to earlier—calm, unreadable, her short black hair tucked behind one ear. Her eyes locked onto Max’s.
“You brought them,” she said. Not a question.
“They’re not just friends,” Max replied. “We’re a team.”
She gave a slight nod. “Get in.”
Jessica and James hesitated only a moment before scrambling inside. Max was the last to jump in before the door slid shut behind him. The van pulled out, fast but controlled.
Inside was dimly lit. The walls were lined with sleek tech—screens showing traffic cams, encrypted messages, and lines of code scrolling endlessly. Another man sat at the back, silent, monitoring everything.
“I told you I wasn’t interested in joining,” Max said, gripping the edge of the seat.
“And I told you the choice wouldn’t always be yours,” the agent replied without turning.
Jessica stared at her. “Who are you?”
“My name’s Agent Mira Lane. I work for a shadow agency called The Echelon Directive. We specialize in cleaning up messes—like the one you made at the Five Star King Hotel.”
James looked between them, still catching his breath. “So what now? You’re here to protect us?”
Mira gave a humorless smile. “Protect you? No. I’m here to move you. Kyle’s already dispatched someone to your school. We intercepted him five minutes before the alarm went off.”
Max swallowed hard. “He’s here?”
“He was,” Mira confirmed. “We’ve neutralized the immediate threat, but that won’t last. Kyle has reach. He’ll try again.”
"Do you think you can shake him off ,lol keep on dreaming?",Ms Michelle max class teacher said,
Jessica sat back, wide-eyed. “What does he want with us?”
Mira finally looked at her. “Not all of you. Just Max. He’s seen as a threat. You accessed something you shouldn’t have—something no kid should even know exists. And Kyle doesn’t like being exposed.”
James looked at Max. “What did you see, man?”
Max hesitated, replaying the moment in his mind. That folder. That encrypted file buried deep in the hotel’s mainframe, hidden behind ten layers of code. He hadn’t told them the whole truth yet.
“I saw a list,” Max said at last. “Names. Bank accounts. Locations. Some of them tied to corrupt government people. And some... were marked ‘terminated.’ It looked like a hit list.”
James’s mouth fell open. Jessica looked sick.
“And that,” Mira said grimly, “is why Kyle won’t stop until you’re either under his control—or gone.”
Silence filled the van as it raced down the highway, leaving behind the school, the alarm, and whatever danger had been closing in. But Max knew it wasn’t over.
It had only just begun.
Max was about to sit when he got drawn out of the van by some guys in black suits and dark glasses
"Max!" Jessica shouted worried
Mira was about to draw out her gun from back make a move and he is dead, and you better don't follow us if don't want them dead, you two get into the car, the man said to Jessica and James, while Mira hands remain in the air while Ms Michelle stayed neutral and they drove off
