Denrique made the toast.
“To beautiful women! To you…”
he significantly glanced at Amelia, before turning and facing me, throwing a look directly into my eyes.
“And to you. Two beautiful women.”
We laughed and clinked glasses, our faces lush in the candlelight. It was good tequila. Smooth and smoky. Only Jayden coughed. The rest of us relished.
Amelia leaned back into the couch with a “mmm” and kicked off her high heels.
“Lina tells me you are good in massaging feet. I am thirsty for some after all that dancing.”
Amelia landed her bare heels firmly into Jayden’s lap. Jayden glanced at me, asking for permission. It was so cute and very appreciated but I had to chuckle. I had practically just made out with the man sitting at my side and permission to give a foot rub. I nodded my head as a green light.
Amelia knew how to preside things. She started questioning Jayden about his work, involving him in a side conversation. It allowed Denrique and I to turn to each other and carry our own, more interesting conversation.
“You have beautiful eyes,” he said, sincerely.
“Oh stop it.”
He didn’t stop anything. He moved his body closer to me, close enough for me to smell his freshly scrubbed and mannish scent. He spoke low, so that I had to lean in slightly to hear him.
“If you were my woman, I would never let you get this close to another man.”
“Well, my husband is a bit different than most men.” I answered earnestly and softly. “That’s one of the many reasons why I chose to accept his marriage proposal and be married to him.”
Denrique placed his hand back to my thigh. I looked down at it disapprovingly but kept silent.
“Well. You chose well.”
Glancing at Jayden as I sipped my wine, I could tell he was struggling to hear what we were whispering to each other even while he stumbled through his answer to Amelia’s latest question about his stalled career.
Denrique picked up my hand and held it in his. We entwined our fingers together. I watched the interplay of our hands, his dark tan fingers intertwined with my tiny pale ones.
Was Jayden seeing this? I did not dare look up to check. Instead I kept my eyes on my hands and whispered for Denrique’s ears only.
“What are we doing?”
“We’re getting up from this couch and we’re going to walk into my bedroom and then we’re going to close the door.”
