Chapter 7

“Do it to see what Jayden does, i***t! It’ll be amazing. I bet a dollar to a doughnut he’s going to explode in his pants. It’ll be a hoot!” I shook my head at Amelia. No. That wasn’t a good idea. “I can’t do that,” I went back to applying my lipstick. “Oh, come on!” She incited. “It’s just a little fun. Let’s see what Jayden does! I want to know. Don’t you?” I didn’t say yes nor did I say no either. It would be a fun lure. “So, we’d just go back out there and I would sit on the couch next to Denrique and you’d sit next to Jayden? What are you and Jayden going to do?” “Jayden and I are going to do technically nothing. You can trust me on that one.” On one hand it offended me that Amelia was so disgusted by Jayden but I had to admit it was also reassuring. If they were doing nothing then I suppose it was a harmless enough daring feat. “Do you think Jayden would even utter a thing?” I asked. “I don’t know! He’s your husband.” Amelia cackled. “Let’s go discover!” And with that she took me by the arm and we walked with an excited girlish spring heading back to the boys. * Denrique saw us coming first and immediately read our body language, instinctively aware that something was up. Jayden was talking about something but trailed off, realizing Denrique’s interest was clearly diverted as us, girls, rounded the coffee table. Amelia landed herself heavily next to Jayden on the couch but I took some more seconds. My eyes met Denrique’s for a hot second but I blushed, looking away, then decently, I smoothed my dress and sat down next to him. My positioning landed a little closer to him than I had planned. There was only about an inch or two of space between us. I eyed Jayden and found him gazing at me in a way I had never seen before. He was absolutely riveted but his eyes were dark, impossible to read. I turned to Denrique and caught his expression and saw upshot eyebrows, genuine surprise. I guessed that Amelia kept things interesting by not telling him much in advance. I hadn’t really thought too hard about Denrique before going into this. What would this stud think? Or do? I gave Denrique a shy smile then I glanced over at Jayden again. He wasn’t flipping over the coffee table, twisting me by the arm and dragging me home. But he didn’t look comfortable either. He appeared terrified and yet thirsting for more. My empathetic check-in concluded with a note of concern. My dear hubby better not have a heart attack, I thought. The rest of us were just sitting relaxed around the living room except for Jayden, he appeared to be strapped into a rocket blasting into the mesosphere. Denrique handed me my wine glass and smoothly rested his other arm on the couch behind my shoulders. I could feel the weight of it, tickling the hairs on the back of my neck. Was my husband going to say anything about his wife suddenly choosing the seat away from him or was he going to pretend this was just a casual, inconsequential choice? A happenstance of being comfortable with friends? “So, Lina, tell me…” Denrique asked in a low, womanizing tone but loud enough for all of us to hear, “What’s your sign?” We laughed at the way too obvious pick-up line. It was the most inappropriate thing to say and it totally broke the ice. So, this Denrique was funny too! “Sagittarius,” I mustered to answer. “Same here! My birthday is November 25th.” “No way! Same to mine!” I said with an extra delightedness than I expected. “Amelia! Did you know your boyfriend and your bff share a birthday?” I was trying to engage these two couch potatoes sitting across from us in our conversation. But they didn’t take the trap. Amelia just shrugged and smiled, spinning her wine, like she was enjoying the show. Jayden sat like a spectator who was frozen in his seat, all wound up. I had to wonder which channel did he exactly think we were on here? “What luck!” Denrique gently pushed me playfully, touching the exposed skin of my thigh with the knuckles of his hand and I subconsciously noted how huge those hands were. Then he turned his hand over so the flat of his fingers caressed away the effect of his nudge and then, just as suddenly, his hand was gone, reaching for his wine. It was the briefest of touches but it was powerfully effective. I sat erect, spine feeling a mild stinging sensation, like he had touched me there too. This boyfriend of Amelia’s sure was being a bit fresh with his hands, I thought and pulled down at the hem of my tight-fitting party dress. Suddenly I felt how practically naked I was in this skimpy thing. Why did Jayden let me leave the house dressed like this? I look like such a slut! Then I scolded myself. Jayden let me dress like this because we were partying like rock stars tonight. That was the whole plan and now I was over reacting. Denrique’s easy touch was a cultural thing, nothing more. Something they do in Kenya. The guy was just being friendly. Denrique put down his glass and kept up his good cheer, confidently rolling over any discomfiture that might have ran from nowhere and found its way into the room. “We should celebrate together! This year. You and me! We do a big joint birthday party. It’ll be fun!” “Um, you’d need to discuss that with my husband,” I said, getting back my calmness. “Why?” He had the insolent boldness to show genuine disbelief. “Because my husband always has something nice planned for me.” I glanced over at Jayden. Hello? Earth to Hubby! Are you going to just sit there while this guy makes moves on me? “Tequila!” Amelia blurted suddenly. “This party needs tequila. Come on, Jayden. Let’s go get it.” Amelia stood up, giving Jayden who remained seated a little kick. He looked up at her as if pulled out of a dazedness. “Wh… Where are we going?” He said it like he was terrified of the answer. To be frank, I was looking up at Amelia with a what are you thinking scowl on my lips. There was no way she was leaving me alone in her apartment with her boyfriend while she and my husband do a liquor store run. She would be gone for an hour or more. It was like she could read our minds. “Relax you two. I’m not taking him far. Just to the kitchen and back.” I think Jayden and I both breathed a sigh of relief. “Bring the good stuff, baby.” Denrique winked at his girl. “Don’t I always?” Amelia winked right back at her man. The exchange gave me a torture of competitive jealousy. I was one of the sixteen common chess pieces in this chess Amelia was playing with her man. I could see in his eyes that it was with her that he clearly had the deeper connection. “Come on,” Amelia snapped her fingers at Jayden, snapping him back to reality. “I need your help giving Denrique the good stuff. Let’s go.” I looked at Jayden, making my eyes wide as saucers, urgently asking the only question a wife could ask: Are you really going to leave me alone in a room with this guy? Jayden glanced back at me like he didn’t know what to do. “Ok,” he said humbly. As he stood, I noticed that he had to fidget with his crotch. Was my husband adjusting his hard-on? Amelia threw me a smirk and I just looked away. Amelia placed her palm on Jayden’s back and ushered him out of the room. I watched them go. My heart was pounding in my chest. My skin rippled with goose bumps. The presence of Denrique at my side growing heavier with every step of my departing husband.
