Mira stared at the blinking device on Lucas’s wrist, panic clawing at her chest. “You’re... you’re tagged,” she whispered.
Lucas’s face fell. “I didn’t know. They must have done it when ”
“No time for explanations,” Nora interrupted sharply, her knife already out. She moved to Lucas’s side, her movements quick and precise. “Hold still. This is going to hurt.”
Lucas gritted his teeth as Nora sliced through the device. Blood welled up around the cut, but neither of them flinched. She smashed the tracker under her boot and grabbed Lucas’s arm to wrap it.
“We have maybe five minutes before they realize it’s offline,” she said, her voice tight. “Move.”
The trio sprinted through the maze of hallways, alarms blaring and shadows flickering with approaching guards. Mira’s heart pounded as she followed Nora, who moved like a shadow herself, disabling cameras and slipping through doors with ease.
They reached an emergency exit, but as Nora pushed it open, gunfire erupted. Mira screamed, ducking as bullets ricocheted off the walls. Nora shoved Mira behind a stack of crates, pulling out a pistol.
“Stay down!” Nora barked, returning fire.
Lucas joined her, his movements slower due to his injuries but still focused. Mira watched in horror as more guards poured in, their sheer numbers overwhelming.
“We can’t hold them off,” Lucas shouted, his voice strained. “Mira, go!”
“No!” Mira yelled back. “Not without you!”
Nora turned to Mira, her expression fierce. “He’s right. You have the coordinates. If they catch you, everything we’ve done will be for nothing. Run!”
Mira hesitated, torn between her instincts to stay and her fear of leaving them behind. But the look in Nora’s eyes left no room for argument.
“Go!” Nora screamed, firing another shot.
Mira bolted through the emergency exit, the chaos behind her fading as she disappeared into the night.
As Mira ran, tears streaming down her face, she realized she wasn’t just fleeing The Aegis she was running toward a truth that could cost her everything.
