Chapter 3: A Trail of Secrets

The message on the cabin door stopped Mira cold. We see you. The words dripped with menace, their uneven scrawl suggesting haste but intent. Lucas stepped in front of her, his jaw tightening as he scanned their surroundings. “Stay here,” he whispered, pulling a small knife from his boot. “Wait,” Mira hissed, grabbing his arm. “What if it’s a trap?” Lucas glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “It probably is.” Mira’s stomach churned, but before she could protest, Lucas pushed the cabin door open. It creaked ominously, revealing a dim interior cluttered with dusty furniture and cobwebs. Lucas stepped inside cautiously, motioning for Mira to follow. She hesitated, her heart hammering, but the encroaching darkness of the forest behind her left her no choice. Inside, the cabin smelled of mildew and decay. A single lantern flickered on a wooden table, its dim light casting eerie shadows on the walls. Papers were strewn across the floor, and a map was pinned to the far wall, marked with red Xs. Lucas examined the room quickly, checking behind doors and under furniture. When he was satisfied that they were alone, he turned to Mira. “It’s safe. For now.” Mira’s gaze lingered on the map. “What is this place?” “It was a safehouse,” Lucas said. “Used by people like me who defected from The Aegis. But it looks like someone found it first.” Mira moved to the table, her eyes scanning the papers. Most of it was indecipherable codes, symbols, and shorthand she didn’t recognize. But one sheet caught her attention. It was a photograph of a man she didn’t know, with her father standing beside him. “This is my dad,” she murmured, her fingers brushing the image. Lucas peered over her shoulder. “That’s Dr. Conrad. He was your father’s colleague—and the only other person who knew what your father discovered.” Mira’s head snapped up. “Where is he now?” “He disappeared years ago,” Lucas said. “If he’s alive, he might know where your father hid the evidence. But finding him won’t be easy.” Before Mira could respond, a sharp c***k echoed outside, like a branch snapping underfoot. Lucas’s hand shot out, extinguishing the lantern. “Down,” he ordered, pulling her to the floor. Mira held her breath as footsteps approached the cabin. The door creaked open, and a beam of light swept across the room. “They’re inside,” a deep voice said. Lucas tensed, his grip tightening on the knife. He motioned for Mira to stay put, then moved silently toward the intruders. From her hiding spot behind the table, Mira watched as two figures stepped into the cabin, their flashlights cutting through the darkness. “We know you’re here,” one of them said, his voice calm but menacing. “Come out now, and we’ll make it quick.” Lucas struck like a shadow, taking down the first man with a swift blow to the head. The second man spun around, but Lucas was already on him, pinning him to the floor. “Who sent you?” Lucas growled, his knife pressed to the man’s throat. The man smirked, blood trickling from his lip. “You can’t stop them. They’ll find you, and they’ll find her. It’s only a matter of time.” Lucas didn’t flinch. “Wrong answer.” With a quick motion, he knocked the man unconscious and stood, his chest heaving. “We need to go,” he said, pulling Mira to her feet. As they fled the cabin, Mira’s mind raced. Every step deeper into this nightmare seemed to raise more questions than answers. What had her father uncovered? And why was it worth dying for? Lucas led her through the forest until they emerged onto a dirt road. A rusty pickup truck was parked nearby, its keys tucked under the visor. “This yours?” Mira asked, raising an eyebrow. Lucas smirked. “Let’s just say I’ve used it before.” They climbed in, and Lucas started the engine. As the truck rumbled to life, Mira glanced at him. “What now?” “We find Dr. Conrad,” Lucas said, shifting into gear. “If anyone knows where your father’s evidence is, it’s him.” “And if he’s dead?” Mira asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Lucas’s jaw tightened. “Then we’re back to square one.” They drove for hours, the forest giving way to open fields and rolling hills. Mira fought to stay awake, her exhaustion threatening to overwhelm her. “Get some rest,” Lucas said, his voice softer than she’d ever heard it. “We’ll need our strength for what’s ahead.” Mira nodded, leaning her head against the window. Despite the chaos of the past 24 hours, she found a strange comfort in Lucas’s presence. He was a man of few words, but there was something about him something steady and unyielding that made her past 24 hours Hours later, Mira woke to find the truck parked outside a small motel. Lucas was slumped over the wheel, unconscious. At first, she thought he was sleeping, but when she shook his shoulder, he didn’t stir. Panic set in as she noticed the blood pooling beneath him. Someone had attacked them and she hadn’t even realized it.
