Chapter 8: A Deadly Pursuit

267 Words
Mira grabbed the folder and darted out of the room, her pulse pounding. The footsteps grew louder, and she realized with dread that whoever was chasing her was closing in fast. She sprinted through the facility, her mind racing. Every hallway looked the same, and the dim light made it hard to see. But Mira pushed on, clutching the folder tightly. Her pursuer finally caught up to her, a man dressed in all black with a gun drawn. Mira ducked behind a pillar as he fired, the bullet ricocheting off the wall. She grabbed a rusty pipe from the floor and swung it with all her strength when he approached. The impact knocked him out cold, and Mira didn’t wait to see if he’d stay down. She burst through an exit and ran into the forest, the folder still in her hands. Hours later, Mira emerged on a desolate road. A lone car approached, its headlights piercing the darkness. She flagged it down, her heart pounding. The driver, an older woman, stopped and let her in.Mira gave her a fake name and begged to be taken to the nearest town. When they arrived,Mira slipped into a rundown motel and locked herself in. She opened the folder again, scanning its contents for something she might have missed. Her father’s notes mentioned a journalist Eva Jones who had been helping him expose The Aegis. If Eva was still alive, she might be Mira’s best chance. As Mira searched for Eva’s contact information, her phone buzzed with an unknown number. A text appeared: “We know where you are.”
