Chanced Encounter

His team mates were still offline when Liwan logged in. While waiting, he took stock of the items they gathered so far. Putting some into his character’s inventory, he warped to the land of Rionas where one of the two enchanted kilns in the whole land of Soulnight is located. The other kiln is located at Enorcal. Enchanted kilns are manned by sprite elves NPCs. A player who wishes to use the enchanted kiln would have to converse with the sprites first. Then a pop-up message would appear, asking the player to choose which process will he be making use of the kiln for. Then the sprites will ask the player for the ingredients. Then they would throw in the mentioned ingredients into the kiln carelessly, like throwing a bunch of trash in a mountain of more trash. A pop up message would again appear asking the player if he or she wants to proceed with the process. All you need to do is click on either yes or no. The kiln’s success rate varies from time to time, depending on one’s luck. For basic recipes like creating fruit potions, the system has a fixed rate of fifty percent. The default fifty percent plus the character’s luck for the day would determine the success of the fruit potion creation. It also holds true for other processes involving enchanting and stripping enchantments of equipments, strengthening imbued magical properties, and so on. Anything that involves magic, make use of the enchanted kiln. For upgrading, repair and assembling of equipments, Soulnight has four spots where blacksmiths accept such work for a certain price. Those blacksmith NPCs has shops at the center of each town—-Enorcal, Tanukar, Aisenor and Leeven. Liwan made Blade walk towards the edge of the town center, particularly at the East gate. A few steps from the stone bridge lies the location of the enchanted kiln, just outside Rionas. He sighted two players there, an Invoker and a Chevalier like him. But Blade and the other Chevalier’s similarities ended there. Liwan’s character created a sorry picture standing behind the two. One part of their armor alone speaks wealth, especially the Invoker. Invokers are advanced classes and their advantages lies not only with their set of skills but also with the equipments tailored for them. Since his audio was on, he could hear the two conversing with the proximity Blade has. They’re complaining about the low turn out of fruit potions they created through the kiln. “This enchanted kiln must hate me. How come almost eighty percent of my turn-outs are failures?” the Chevalier complained, shaking his head. Liwan noted the character’s name above the Invoker’s head as Chroma while the Chevalier is Peaceout. Liwan blinked rapidly. He couldn’t believe his eyes. He could feel his eyebrow rising of their own accord in surprise. He’s not expecting to come across these two at this early part of the game. Liwan has plans for a chance meeting to happen after he established his own guild. Chroma is the guild master of the guild called Riverians, with Peaceout as his deputy. From the far distant future, guild Riverians is the competitor of his guild, of which he no longer leads and part of, and belongs to the top ten in the national rankings. And now this. It is a very surprising coincidence. “Don’t stress yourself about it. We have a lot of ingredients to waste. We can come back again next time after gathering enough,” Chroma consoled his deputy. “It’s just that it is so frustrating! I came here with a full inventory and what did this damn kiln gave me in return? Twenty potions! Only twenty!” Liwan cleared his throat. It was loud enough to cause the two to turn their heads. “Sorry to interrupt. I can’t help hearing your conversation. I may have a trick to reverse your turn-outs,” he offered. Yes, it was an offer, an olive branch or whatchamacallit. Liwan recognizes the importance of taking action early on. As early as now, it won’t hurt to establish an amiable relationship with them. In fact, it would help his future guild a lot. His ambition is not just limited to building his reputation, his guild and participate in many guild wars. No. There’s still the Crystal Palace, the future duel event and finally the national tournament. And establishing an alliance with Riverians can be considered one of the steps he has to take to propel him towards his goal. Oh, he would be using Chroma and Peaceout in the future, make no mistake about it. The two looked at each other and then back at Blade. “Is that a surefire trick?” Chroma asked. Blade shrugged his shoulders. “Of course not, just eighty percent.” “Can you back it up?” This time it was Peaceout who asked. “Yes. But success rate depends on the luck of the character. According to my stats, my luck is excellent today. What about yours?” Soulnight has a luck system. It governs almost aspect of the character’s way of life in Soulnight. Liwan has a habit of checking his character’s luck everyday, which changes every twelve hours. So he always see to it that Blade’s luck is good each time he takes a chance on any of the enchanting kiln or the blacksmiths in Soulnight. There is no painful way to lose your items than letting those NPCs swallow all your hard earned items when the process fails. “Uhmm…I did not check,” Peaceout admitted. Liwan clicked his tongue. “We all know that the default success rate of creating fruity potions in the enchanted kiln is fifty percent. Add your own luck to amplify the success rate, that’s kind of basic.” “I checked, his luck is good. Same as mine,” Chroma said. Blade nodded his head. “That doesn’t end there though.” “Really? Is that the trick you’re talking about?” “Yes. Actually I just came upon this by chance and after trial and error, I arrived to a conclusion how to ensure a ninety percent chance of success.” “N-Ninety? You’re not kidding me, are you?” Peaceout exclaimed. “Ninety percent.” “I don’t think that’s possible,” Chroma chimed in. “I know you’ll say that. I can’t blame you. If I’m in your shoes, I won’t believe a random stranger’s words just like that. But may I demonstrate?” Liwan suggested. “Sure, go ahead.” Chroma stepped aside to give way to Blade. Blade stopped in front of the sprite elves manning the enchanted kiln on both sides. Before he click on the elves to converse with them, Blade turned to the two watching him. “I am a Chevalier, and my race’s color is yellow. Creating speed fruity potions would give me ninety percent success rate compared to other potions. To minimize material waste, I won’t be creating other potions aside from that. I’d save that for another day when my luck is through the roof,” Liwan explained. “Now watch.” Blade conversed with the sprite elves. Then he gave them the necessary materials. The elves started operating the enchanted kiln, a cacophony of colors bursting through it’s body as it did it’s magic, until the message asking Blade to proceed or cancel popped up. Liwan clicked on yes. The enchanted kiln’s light intensified, almost blinding. A low hum was heard, until it gradually settled into a quiet. The kiln blew off steam before finally settling down. On kiln’s user interface, a glowing yellow flask appeared. Liwan smiled to himself. He clicked on the yellow flask with his mouse and dragged it into Blade’s inventory. Blade turned to Chroma. “Trade,” he said. A pop-up message box appeared, asking Chroma to accept Blade’s trade request. Chroma then accepted. Liwan immediately put the potion into his trade window, allowing Chroma to see. “That doesn’t prove anything.” “Then I’ll try ten times. Out of ten, it is expected I’d be successful in creating nine potions. What do you say?” “What’s in it for you? Why do you try so hard?” Peaceout asked, suspicion evident in his tone. “The truth is, I wanted a pact with you guys, in exchange for my knowledge. I’ll be establishing a guild of my own once I am able. I’d like to propose an alliance.” Chroma let out a booming laugh. Liwan didn’t mind though. “What do we get from a small fry like you? Nothing.” “And you’ll lose nothing. In fact, you’ll gain something,” Liwan countered. It rendered the two players speechless, unable to utter a come back. Liwan chuckled in good nature, easing the seemingly heavy atmosphere that threatened to settle between them. “Of course, I won’t be some i***t to force myself upon you guys. I still have eight speed fruity potions to craft. If you’ll excuse me, gentlemen. Do not go yet, please. We’ll talk business when I’m done. I promise it would be worth your while.” And they did sat down in a tavern to discuss business, eight speed fruity potions after.
