Chapter 11

1668 Words
The next morning, Elena Sinclair walked into Black Empire Holdings knowing everyone was waiting for her to make another mistake. She could feel it before she even reached the executive floor. The elevator doors opened. Two senior executives near the reception desk immediately lowered their voices. A secretary glanced at Elena before pretending to focus on her computer. No one said anything. They didn't have to. Her first mistake had already become company gossip. The heiress given twelve months to prove herself had barely survived her first week. Now she had another decision to make. Elena entered her office and placed her handbag on the desk. Grace was already waiting. “You're early.” “I didn't sleep.” Grace sighed. “Neither did I.” She handed Elena a tablet. “Richard Lawson's committee sent a response.” Elena read the message. The investor was willing to continue negotiations, but only under revised conditions. Her expression hardened. “They want fifty-one percent control of Madison Heights.” Grace nodded. “And they want the right to replace the current project management team if certain targets aren't met.” Elena looked up. “That's not an investment.” “No. It's a takeover disguised as one.” Elena read the proposal again. “If we accept, Black Empire loses control of one of its biggest developments.” “And if we reject it?” “We could lose the funding.” Grace brought up another document. “Then there's Adrian Vale.” Elena's jaw tightened. She hated that his name kept appearing in every major decision. “What's his offer?” “Vale International will provide the full funding.” Elena studied the proposal. The terms were attractive. Vale would take a minority stake while Black Empire retained operational control. Then she reached the final clause. Her eyes narrowed. “First-right negotiation privileges on future Black Empire developments?” Grace nodded. “That clause is dangerous.” “Why?” “Because it's not really about Madison Heights. They're trying to secure access to our future projects.” Elena closed the proposal. “Both offers have problems.” Grace frowned. “So what do we do?” Elena stood. “We make our own option.” --- The emergency meeting began at ten. Alexander sat at the head of the boardroom table. Rebecca, Victor, Daniel, Damien, and several senior executives were present. Elena placed both proposals on the table. “The Madison Heights investor wants fifty-one percent control.” Victor immediately shook his head. “Absolutely not.” “I agree.” Daniel looked surprised. “Then why are we discussing it?” “Because rejecting it without an alternative puts the project at risk.” She placed Adrian's proposal beside it. “Vale International is offering full financing while allowing us to retain control.” Victor glanced at the document. “That is clearly the better offer.” “No.” He looked up. Elena pointed at the final clause. “They want first-right negotiation privileges on future Black Empire developments.” Rebecca read it carefully. Her expression changed. “She noticed it.” Victor leaned back. “So? It's negotiable.” “Then negotiate it,” Elena said. Victor's eyes hardened. “Unlike you, I've negotiated major corporate deals before.” Elena felt the insult but remained calm. “Then you should understand why this clause is unacceptable.” Damien spoke. “She has a point.” Victor turned toward him. “You're taking her side?” “I'm looking at the contract.” Alexander remained silent. Elena took a breath. “I propose we reject both offers.” Several heads turned. Daniel frowned. “And how do you intend to fund Madison Heights?” “Internally.” “With what money?” “Our investment division.” Daniel shook his head. “That capital is already allocated.” “Not all of it.” “You don't have the authority to redirect it.” “I do if the board approves it.” Victor leaned forward. “And why would the board approve a decision that could put hundreds of millions at risk?” “Because the alternative is surrendering control.” “You're gambling.” “No.” Elena looked around the room. “I'm protecting the company.” Victor scoffed. “You've been here less than a week.” “And I've already found twenty-three million dollars moving through accounts that weren't properly reported.” Silence filled the room. Daniel's face tightened. Elena noticed. “I'm not asking Black Empire to gamble. I'm asking us to stop giving other companies opportunities to profit from our weaknesses.” Rebecca looked at Alexander. “She has a proposal.” Alexander nodded. “Continue.” Elena opened her folder. “I want to temporarily suspend new acquisitions and redirect available capital toward Madison Heights.” Victor immediately objected. “That will affect three other projects.” “I know.” “You can't sacrifice other developments to save one.” “I'm not sacrificing them. I'm prioritizing the project with the greatest immediate return.” Daniel shook his head. “And if you're wrong?” Elena met his eyes. “Then I'll take responsibility.” Victor smiled coldly. “You've already said that once.” “This time, I'll make sure I have the authority to do it.” Alexander looked around the table. “Vote.” Rebecca voted first. “Yes.” Damien followed. “Yes.” Daniel hesitated. Then shook his head. “No.” Victor immediately voted against. Two against. Two for. Everyone looked toward Alexander. But he didn't vote. Instead, he looked at Elena. “You're missing one vote.” Elena frowned. “Whose?” The boardroom doors opened. A woman entered. Elena recognized her immediately. Margaret Sinclair. Her father's older sister. Margaret had opposed Elena during the family vote. Now she took the empty seat. “I'll cast the deciding vote.” Elena's pulse quickened. Margaret studied the proposal. “You understand what you're asking the company to do?” “Yes.” “You could damage other divisions.” “I know.” “You could lose Madison Heights anyway.” “I know.” “You could also prove to the board that you're not ready.” Elena held her gaze. “I know.” Margaret studied her. “And you still want this?” “Yes.” “Why?” Elena looked around the table. At the executives who doubted her. At Victor, who wanted her to fail. At her father. Then she looked back at Margaret. “Because if I keep making decisions based on whether people approve of me, I'll never become a leader.” The room went silent. “I was given twelve months to prove I'm fit to inherit the Black Empire. I'm not going to spend those twelve months trying to make everyone comfortable.” Margaret looked down at the proposal. Then she signed. “Yes.” Victor shot to his feet. “This is insane.” Margaret didn't look at him. “It's decided.” Alexander finally spoke. “The board approves Elena's proposal.” Elena released a breath. But Victor pushed his chair back. “This is not over.” Elena met his eyes. “I didn't think it was.” He walked out. Rebecca remained seated. “You've won your first vote.” Elena smiled faintly. “Thank you.” Rebecca's expression remained serious. “Don't celebrate.” “Why?” “Because now you have to make the decision work.” --- Two hours later, Elena stood in the operations center overseeing the Madison Heights restructuring. She had redirected capital, ordered a complete financial audit, frozen questionable payments, and instructed legal to renegotiate supplier contracts. It was the most authority she had ever exercised. She was reviewing the latest projections when Grace rushed in. “Elena.” She looked up. “What happened?” Grace placed her tablet on the desk. “The steel supplier terminated its contract.” Elena's eyes widened. “Today?” “Yes.” “Why?” “They claim Black Empire violated the terms.” “That isn't possible.” Grace showed her the notice. “They're demanding forty-seven million dollars in compensation.” Elena stared at the figure. Her first decision had barely been approved. Already, someone had created another crisis. “Who signed the termination?” Grace hesitated. “Daniel Cross.” “Daniel?” “Yes.” “Get him.” “He isn't answering.” Elena looked back at the document. Something wasn't right. The termination had been prepared before the board vote. Someone had known what she was going to propose. Someone had prepared a counterattack before she even made her decision. Her phone suddenly vibrated. Unknown number. She answered. “Hello?” A familiar voice spoke. “You should have taken the investment.” Elena's blood ran cold. “Who is this?” “You were warned.” “About what?” “You're trying to protect an empire that doesn't belong to you.” Her grip tightened. “Who are you?” The caller laughed softly. “Ask your family.” The line went dead. Elena slowly lowered the phone. She looked around the operations center. Hundreds of employees continued working as if nothing had happened. But Elena knew better. Her first decision had been made. And someone had already decided to punish her for it. She looked at the Madison Heights file. Then at the forty-seven-million-dollar demand. Her jaw tightened. If this was a battle, she would fight it. Because if she wanted to become the heiress of the Black Empire, she would have to learn how to fight back. And for the first time, Elena understood something terrifying. The people fighting against her weren't waiting for her to fail. They were already moving before she even knew there was a war.
