The boardroom fell silent.
Adrian Vale stood in the doorway with a black folder in his hand, his expression unreadable.
Every eye turned toward him.
Elena remained standing beside the table, surrounded by raised hands that had been seconds away from stripping her of her authority.
Adrian looked at Alexander.
“Before you vote to remove Elena Sinclair, you should know where the forty-seven million dollars went.”
Victor's chair scraped against the floor.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian walked into the room and placed the folder on the table.
“It means your supplier didn't lose the money.”
Daniel stood.
“Then where did it go?”
“To a company called Marlowe Strategic Partners.”
Rebecca frowned.
“We already know that.”
“You know the company received the money,” Adrian said. “You don't know who authorized the transfer.”
Elena stepped closer.
“Who did?”
Adrian looked at her.
“That is where it gets interesting.”
He slid several documents across the table.
Elena picked up the first page.
Her eyes widened.
“This can't be right.”
Victor grabbed the document.
“What is it?”
Elena handed it to him.
Victor read it, and his expression changed.
“That’s impossible.”
Alexander looked between them.
“Explain.”
Adrian placed another document on the table.
“Marlowe Strategic Partners isn't owned by Charles Mercer directly. It's controlled through a private holding structure.”
Daniel stared at the papers.
“Whose?”
Adrian's answer stunned the room.
“Black Empire Holdings.”
Several voices erupted at once.
“What?”
“That doesn't make sense.”
“Explain.”
Adrian raised a hand.
“Quiet.”
The room settled.
“Marlowe Strategic Partners was established eight years ago as a private investment vehicle,” Adrian continued. “It was created using Black Empire capital to make investments the company didn't want publicly connected to its name.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“I don't remember approving that.”
“You didn't.”
Adrian's voice was calm.
“Your father did.”
Elena's heart skipped.
“My great-grandfather?”
Adrian nodded.
Rebecca looked confused.
“Then why was the money transferred there?”
“Because someone revived the account three months ago.”
Alexander's face became cold.
“Who?”
“That is what we need to find out.”
Elena stared at the documents.
The missing payment.
The supplier termination.
The leaked information.
The forged signature.
None of it was random.
Someone was deliberately destabilizing Madison Heights.
But why?
Adrian closed the folder.
“Because Madison Heights is worth more than this board realizes.”
Victor frowned.
“The development is already worth billions.”
“I'm not talking about the property.”
Adrian walked toward the screen displaying the development plans.
“I'm talking about what's underneath it.”
Elena's attention sharpened.
“What do you mean?”
Adrian changed the display.
A map appeared.
“There's a planned underground transportation connection beneath Madison Heights.”
Elena nodded.
“I know.”
“What you don't know is that the city is considering expanding it.”
A second map appeared, showing the proposed route connecting Madison Heights to several valuable commercial districts.
Elena's eyes widened.
“If that expansion is approved…”
“Property values around Madison Heights could increase dramatically,” Adrian finished.
Victor stared at the map.
“How much?”
“Potentially several billion dollars.”
The room went silent.
Elena suddenly understood.
Someone wasn't trying to destroy Madison Heights.
Someone wanted to control it before its value exploded.
Adrian looked at her.
“And that's why you're being pushed out.”
“You're saying someone wants me removed so they can force Black Empire to sell?”
“Yes.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“But who would have enough influence?”
“Someone who knows the company from the inside.”
Elena thought about Victor.
Daniel.
The board.
Her family.
Then Adrian added,
“And someone who knows the city's development plans before they become public.”
Alexander's eyes narrowed.
“Who has access?”
“Several people.”
“Names.”
Adrian looked toward Elena.
“That brings me to my offer.”
Victor frowned.
“What offer?”
Adrian pulled out another document.
“I want to invest.”
Victor laughed.
“Of course you do.”
“Vale International will provide three hundred million dollars in immediate financing.”
The room went silent.
Elena stared at him.
“Three hundred million?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To stabilize Madison Heights.”
Victor stood.
“You expect us to believe this is generosity?”
“No.”
Adrian looked at him coldly.
“I expect you to understand business.”
He turned toward Elena.
“But I'm prepared to structure the deal differently.”
Elena opened the proposal.
Her eyes moved across the terms.
No majority stake.
No operational control.
No first-right privileges over future Black Empire developments.
Instead, Vale International would receive a minority position in Madison Heights and a fixed return based on the project's performance.
Elena looked up.
“This is different from your original offer.”
“I changed it.”
“Why?”
“Because circumstances changed.”
She studied him.
“What do you want in return?”
Adrian held her gaze.
“One thing.”
“What?”
“You remain in charge.”
Elena blinked.
The board members exchanged surprised looks.
Adrian continued.
“If the board removes you, the investment disappears.”
Victor's face hardened.
“You're tying your investment to her?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she's the only person in this room who has been asking the right questions.”
Elena looked down at the contract.
Adrian added,
“There is another condition.”
She looked up.
“What?”
“You allow me access to the financial records related to Madison Heights.”
“Why?”
“Because someone is hiding something.”
Elena nodded slowly.
“I agree.”
Victor slammed his hand against the table.
“This is unacceptable.”
Adrian turned toward him.
“Then reject the money.”
Victor stared at him.
Three hundred million dollars could save the project.
But accepting it would keep Elena in control.
Alexander picked up the proposal.
“Elena?”
She was silent.
Accepting meant bringing Adrian deeper into Black Empire's business.
The man who was supposed to be her competitor would become her financial partner.
And she still didn't know whether she could trust him.
She looked at him.
“Why are you helping me?”
Adrian's expression softened slightly.
“I'm not.”
“Then what are you doing?”
“Making a business decision.”
“You're risking three hundred million dollars.”
“I don't risk money without calculating the return.”
“And what's your return?”
“Madison Heights.”
Elena shook her head.
“That isn't all.”
A faint smile touched his lips.
“No.”
The tension between them intensified.
Before Elena could press him further, Alexander spoke.
“The board will review the proposal. Elena, you have until tomorrow morning to decide.”
The meeting ended.
---
Elena found Adrian in the corridor.
“You knew.”
He turned.
“Knew what?”
“That Madison Heights could become worth billions.”
“Yes.”
“And you didn't tell me.”
“You wouldn't have believed me.”
“You could have tried.”
Adrian studied her.
“You've spent the last week trying to prove you belong here. I didn't want to make the decision for you.”
“You could lose three hundred million dollars.”
“I could.”
“Why?”
Adrian held her gaze.
“Because I believe the project is worth it.”
“Only the project?”
His eyes remained on hers.
“For now.”
Elena felt a strange warmth in her chest.
She quickly stepped back.
“I'll review your offer.”
“You should.”
“And Adrian?”
“Yes?”
“If I accept, you're not going to control me.”
A small smile appeared.
“I wouldn't dare.”
She turned away.
Then stopped.
“Thank you.”
Adrian's expression softened.
“You're welcome.”
---
That night, Elena sat alone in her office.
The three-hundred-million-dollar proposal lay open before her.
It could save Madison Heights.
It could strengthen her position.
It could also make Adrian Vale one of the most powerful people involved in the project.
She reached for the final page.
Then froze.
A handwritten note was attached to the contract.
It wasn't Adrian's handwriting.
Elena read it.
Don't sign the deal.
Her heart began pounding.
She turned the paper over.
Another sentence had been written on the back.
Adrian Vale isn't the man you think he is.
Elena stared at the words.
She slowly looked toward the glass wall of her office.
The corridor outside was empty.
Yet she had the unmistakable feeling that someone was watching her.
She closed the contract.
For the first time, Elena wondered whether the three-hundred-million-dollar deal that could save her was actually the most dangerous decision she had ever been offered.
