Chapter 18: A Victory Nobody Expected

1364 Words
By eight the next morning, the entire Black Empire Holdings building was talking about Madison Heights. The board had approved the restructuring. The project would operate as an independent company under Elena Sinclair's direct supervision. For the first time since her probation began, Elena had control over something that couldn't easily be taken away from her. But victory came with a price. The moment she entered the executive floor, she knew the atmosphere had changed. Some employees looked impressed. Others looked nervous. A few executives avoided eye contact altogether. Grace approached her with a tablet. “You're trending.” Elena stopped. “What?” “Three business outlets have reported that Black Empire is restructuring Madison Heights under your leadership.” Elena took the tablet. The headlines were already spreading. YOUNG SINCLAIR HEIRESS TAKES DIRECT CONTROL OF BILLION-DOLLAR DEVELOPMENT. Another read: ELENA SINCLAIR'S RISKY MOVE COULD SAVE BLACK EMPIRE. Elena frowned. “Who leaked this?” Grace shrugged. “We don't know.” Elena handed the tablet back. “Find out.” Grace nodded. Then her expression changed. “There is something else.” “What?” “The steel supplier called.” Elena looked at her. “The one that terminated the contract?” “Yes.” “What do they want?” “They want to reinstate it.” Elena stared at her. “Why?” “They withdrew the forty-seven-million-dollar claim.” Elena's eyes narrowed. “Just like that?” “They said they received new information proving Black Empire wasn't responsible for the missing payment.” Elena's mind immediately began racing. “Who gave them the information?” Grace shook her head. “They wouldn't say.” Elena walked toward her office. “Get legal.” --- Twenty minutes later, Elena sat with the legal team. The supplier's new agreement was on the table. The termination had been completely withdrawn. The compensation claim had been cancelled. And the supplier was willing to resume deliveries under the original terms. One of the lawyers looked at Elena. “This is extremely unusual.” “Why?” “They were preparing to sue us yesterday.” “And today?” “They're apologizing.” Elena leaned back. “Someone changed their mind.” “Apparently.” She studied the paperwork. There was no obvious explanation. Then she noticed something. The new agreement had been signed by the supplier's chairman. But beside his signature was another authorization. A private financial guarantee. Elena's eyes narrowed. “What's this?” The lawyer looked at it. “I don't know.” “Find out.” He nodded. Elena stared at the document. Someone had paid to make the problem disappear. But why? --- At noon, Elena entered the new Madison Heights headquarters. It was a smaller office inside the Black Empire complex, but it already felt different. There were fewer people. Fewer politics. Most importantly, the financial systems were completely separate from the main company. Daniel stood beside the security team. “The new system is active.” Elena nodded. “Any unauthorized access?” “None.” “Good.” She walked into her new office. A single folder sat on the desk. She frowned. “Who put that there?” Daniel followed her gaze. “No one should have access to this office except authorized personnel.” Elena slowly approached the folder. She opened it. Inside was a single page. Congratulations. Her stomach tightened. Below it was another sentence. You won the first battle. Elena looked at Daniel. “Did you see anyone enter?” “No.” She closed the folder. “This isn't over.” “No,” Daniel agreed. “It isn't.” --- At two that afternoon, Adrian arrived. He walked into Elena's office without knocking. She looked up. “You're becoming very comfortable here.” “You signed an agreement that makes me your financial partner.” “I signed an agreement that makes you a minority investor.” “Exactly.” Elena smiled faintly. “What do you want?” “To see whether you're still standing.” She raised an eyebrow. “I am.” “I noticed.” Adrian placed a file on her desk. “What is this?” “Information about the supplier.” Elena opened it. Her eyes widened. “You found this?” “Yes.” “Where?” “Private records.” She looked at him. “You could have told me earlier.” “I wanted to see what you discovered yourself.” Elena sighed. “Another test?” “Perhaps.” She returned to the file. The documents showed that the steel supplier had been pressured into terminating the contract. A third party had threatened to withdraw several major business relationships if the supplier continued working with Black Empire. “Who threatened them?” Adrian pointed to the final page. Elena read the name. Her expression hardened. “Victor.” Adrian nodded. “He used a subsidiary to pressure the supplier.” “Why?” “To create the forty-seven-million-dollar crisis.” Elena looked up. “But why would he risk exposing himself?” “He didn't.” Adrian pointed to another document. “The subsidiary isn't registered under his name.” Elena studied the ownership structure. A shell company. Then another. Then another. The trail eventually led to Marlowe Strategic Partners. Elena's pulse quickened. “Mercer.” “Yes.” “Victor is connected to Mercer.” “Indirectly.” Elena stood. “So they were working together.” “We don't know that yet.” She looked at him. “We have enough evidence to investigate.” “Investigate, yes.” “Not accuse.” “Exactly.” Elena closed the file. For once, she didn't need to be reminded. She was learning. --- At four, the board held an emergency meeting. Victor entered looking confident. He expected the board to question Elena about the Madison Heights restructuring. Instead, Alexander placed a document in front of him. “Explain this.” Victor looked down. His expression changed. “What is this?” “The supplier's communication records.” Victor looked at Alexander. “I don't know.” Alexander pushed another document toward him. “The subsidiary that contacted the supplier.” Victor's face became pale. “I've never seen this company.” Elena sat silently across from him. She had learned something important. Never attack without proof. So she didn't. She simply watched. Rebecca spoke. “Then why does the company share a registered director with one of your private investment firms?” Victor's eyes flickered. “I have investments.” Margaret leaned forward. “Did you use one of those investments to pressure the supplier?” “No.” Elena finally spoke. “Then you won't object to an independent investigation.” Victor looked at her. “You're setting me up.” “No.” Elena's voice remained calm. “I'm giving you the same opportunity you gave me.” “What opportunity?” “To prove you're innocent.” The room became silent. Alexander nodded. “The investigation will begin immediately.” Victor pushed his chair back. “This is ridiculous.” He walked toward the door. Before he could leave, his phone rang. He answered. His expression changed. “What?” Everyone watched him. He listened for several seconds. Then slowly lowered the phone. Elena noticed the fear in his eyes. “What happened?” Alexander asked. Victor looked at Elena. “The supplier has provided another document.” “What document?” Victor didn't answer. Elena's phone vibrated. A message appeared. You were right to investigate Victor. Then another message arrived. But he is not the one you should fear. Elena's blood ran cold. She looked across the boardroom. Everyone was watching her. Then her phone received one final message. Ask Alexander why the first heiress disappeared. Elena slowly lifted her eyes toward her grandfather. Alexander had seen the message. His face changed. For the first time, Elena knew without doubt that he was hiding something enormous. And whatever it was, it had finally begun to catch up with him. End of Chapter 18
