Chapter 16: She Refuses to Back Down

1560 Words
By nine the next morning, Elena Sinclair had made a decision. She would not ask her grandfather about the first heir. Not yet. The warning had been too deliberate. Someone had entered her office, left a photograph, and given her a question they knew would force her toward Alexander. If she rushed to him now, she would be doing exactly what they wanted. So Elena decided to investigate quietly. She stepped out of the elevator onto the executive floor. The moment she arrived, she noticed the silence. Conversations stopped. Several executives looked at her before quickly looking away. Grace approached. “You've seen it?” Elena frowned. “Seen what?” Grace handed her a tablet. A company-wide report had been circulated that morning. BOARD CONSIDERS TEMPORARY RESTRICTIONS ON ELENA SINCLAIR'S AUTHORITY. Elena read it without blinking. “Who released this?” “We don't know.” “Does the board know?” “They've denied releasing it.” Elena handed the tablet back. “Then someone wants the employees to believe I'm losing control.” Grace nodded. “What are you going to do?” Elena looked across the executive floor. “Nothing.” Grace blinked. “Nothing?” “Not publicly.” She entered her office and locked the door. Then she placed the photograph of Alexander on her desk. Her first search was simple. First heir of Black Empire. Nothing useful appeared. She tried another. Sinclair succession history. Again, almost nothing. She searched old corporate filings. She found references to Alexander's father, his grandfather, and the formation of Black Empire Holdings. But there was no mention of a first heir. Elena leaned back. That was strange. If someone had deliberately erased the person from the company's history, then the first heir hadn't simply been forgotten. Someone had made sure she disappeared. A knock sounded. Elena quickly closed the files. “Come in.” Daniel entered. “I need to speak with you.” “About the audit?” “Yes.” He placed a folder on her desk. “I found something else.” Elena opened it. “Another transfer?” “No.” Daniel pointed to a list of system access records. “These are the people who accessed the executive network during the last six months.” Elena scanned the names. Victor. Daniel. Several board members. Alexander. Her own account. Then one name caught her attention. “Who is this?” Daniel looked at the entry. “Charles Mercer.” Elena's pulse quickened. “Mercer has access?” “Apparently.” “How?” “He was given temporary executive credentials three months ago.” “By whom?” Daniel hesitated. “That information was deleted.” Elena looked up. “Deleted?” “Yes.” “Can you recover it?” “I'm trying.” “Do it.” Daniel nodded. He reached the door, then stopped. “Elena.” She looked at him. “You should be careful.” “Why?” “Because whoever is doing this has access to things most people don't.” Elena held his gaze. “I know.” Daniel left. Elena stared at the closed door. Charles Mercer. He was connected to Marlowe Strategic Partners. He had access to the executive network. And now his name had appeared in the same investigation surrounding the missing forty-seven million dollars. But there was still no proof. Elena wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. She needed evidence. --- At eleven, Elena was summoned to the boardroom. When she entered, Victor was already there. Alexander, Rebecca, Margaret, and several other board members were seated around the table. Victor looked at her. “Close the door.” Elena did. Alexander gestured toward a chair. “Sit.” She remained standing. “What happened?” Rebecca spoke. “The board has received a formal request to restrict your authority.” Elena wasn't surprised. “From whom?” “Several shareholders.” “On what grounds?” Victor answered. “Your recent decisions have created instability.” Elena looked at him. “My decisions?” “You rejected two financing offers.” “And secured a three-hundred-million-dollar proposal.” “Which hasn't been approved.” “Yet.” Victor's expression hardened. “You continue to make decisions without considering the consequences.” Elena walked toward the table. “I considered every consequence before making them.” “You're twenty-five.” “And?” “You don't have the experience required to manage an organization of this size.” Elena looked around the room. “Then why was I given twelve months to prove myself?” Victor fell silent. Elena continued. “You didn't tell me I needed to behave like an experienced executive. You told me I needed to prove I could become one.” Margaret watched her carefully. Rebecca spoke. “The board isn't asking you to step down.” “Not yet.” Silence. Elena knew she had said exactly what everyone was thinking. Alexander finally spoke. “You believe someone is trying to remove you.” “I know someone is.” “Do you have evidence?” “Not enough.” “Then you must be careful.” “I am.” Victor leaned forward. “Then resign from Madison Heights.” Elena stared at him. “No.” “It would protect the company.” “No.” “It would protect you.” “No.” Victor's frustration showed. “You can't keep refusing every reasonable solution.” Elena's voice remained calm. “I'm not refusing reasonable solutions.” She placed both hands on the table. “I'm refusing to surrender because someone is trying to frighten me.” The room became quiet. Victor stared at her. “You think this is bravery?” “No.” Elena looked directly at him. “I think backing down without knowing the truth would be stupidity.” Margaret's expression shifted slightly. Elena continued. “Someone stole forty-seven million dollars.” She counted each point. “Someone used my credentials. Someone leaked confidential information. Someone entered my office. Someone is now trying to turn the board against me.” She looked around the room. “And every time something happens, I'm told the solution is for me to give up more authority.” No one answered. Elena's voice hardened. “I won't.” Victor stood. “You're making a dangerous choice.” “So was every person who built this company.” “You'll regret this.” “Maybe.” Elena met his eyes. “But I'll regret surrendering even more.” Alexander finally spoke. “Enough.” Victor sat. Alexander looked at Elena. “You refuse to back down?” “Yes.” “Even if the board votes against you?” “Yes.” “Even if you lose Madison Heights?” Elena paused. Then answered. “Yes.” Alexander studied her for several seconds. “Good.” Victor looked at him sharply. “Good?” Alexander didn't look at him. “She finally understands what the probation is about.” Elena's heart tightened. “Leadership isn't proved when everyone agrees with you,” Alexander continued. “It is proved when you can stand alone and still make the right decision.” The room fell silent. Then Rebecca's phone rang. She answered. Her expression changed. “What?” She listened, then slowly lowered the phone. “The police have arrived downstairs.” Elena frowned. “Why?” Rebecca looked at her. “They have a warrant.” “For what?” Her face became pale. “For your office.” Elena's blood ran cold. “My office?” “Yes.” Victor stood. “What are they looking for?” Rebecca swallowed. “Evidence connected to the forty-seven-million-dollar fraud.” The room erupted. Elena remained still. Someone had taken things further. They weren't trying to make her look incompetent anymore. They were trying to make her look criminal. She turned toward the door. Then looked at Alexander. “Who called the police?” Nobody answered. “Then I suppose we'll find out.” She walked out. Two police officers were waiting downstairs. One stepped forward. “Elena Sinclair?” “Yes.” “You're not under arrest.” He held out the warrant. “But we're authorized to search your office.” Elena took one breath. Then another. Employees were watching. Executives were watching. The board was watching from above. She handed the warrant back. “Then search it.” The officer nodded. Elena walked toward her office. She refused to run. Refused to panic. Refused to give whoever was behind this the satisfaction of seeing her break. But when she opened the door, she stopped. Something was sitting in the center of her desk. A small black envelope. Her name was written across it. ELENA SINCLAIR. She looked at the officers behind her. Then slowly opened the envelope. Inside was a single photograph. Elena's breath caught. It showed a young woman standing beside Alexander Sinclair decades earlier. She turned the photograph over. Four words were written on the back. She was the first heiress. Elena stared at the photograph. Then at the woman's face. Something about her looked strangely familiar. Something Elena had seen every morning when she looked in the mirror. End of Chapter 16
