The Portrait That Watches Back

664 Words
Kali didn't mean to wander. She told herself she was just exploring, just trying to understand the place she'd been dragged into. But the keep had a way of guiding her feet, nudging her down corridors she didn't choose, pulling her toward places she didn't intend to go. By late morning, she found herself standing before the portrait hall again. The air here was colder than the rest of the keep. Still. Heavy. As if the hall remembered grief. Kali stepped inside. The torches dimmed instantly, their blue flames shrinking as though bowing to the presence of the woman in the largest portrait. Kali's breath caught as she approached it. Silas's sister. Her silver hair flowed like moonlight. Her eyes — gold, fierce, alive — seemed to follow Kali's every movement. Her stance was regal, warrior-like, unbroken. But beneath the paint, Kali felt something else. A thrum. A pulse. A whisper. The same pulse that lived beneath her ribs. Kali swallowed hard. "You're beautiful." The portrait didn't answer, but the air shifted — just slightly, just enough to raise goosebumps along her arms. Kali stepped closer, drawn in by something she couldn't name. "What happened to you?" A faint vibration rippled through the floor. Kali froze. She looked around, but the hall was empty. Silent. Watching. She turned back to the portrait. "Are you... awake?" The pulse in her chest throbbed sharply. Kali stumbled back, clutching her chest. "Stop. Please." But the pulse didn't stop. It answered. A faint echo, like a heartbeat responding to hers. Kali's breath trembled. "You feel me." The torches flickered violently. Kali backed away, her heart racing. She didn't know if she was imagining it, if the keep was playing tricks on her, or if the cursed sister truly sensed her there. But she felt it. A connection. A pull. A recognition. The same recognition she felt when Silas looked at her. Kali turned to leave— And collided with a solid chest. She gasped. Silas stood behind her, his expression unreadable, his eyes darkened with something sharp and conflicted. "You shouldn't be here," he said quietly. Kali stepped back, her pulse racing. "I didn't mean to come here." Silas's gaze flicked to the portrait. His jaw tightened. "She reacts to you." Kali swallowed. "I felt it." Silas closed his eyes, pain flickering across his face. "She was powerful. Too powerful. When the curse took her, she became... unstable." Kali's voice softened. "You locked her away." Silas nodded once. "To protect her. And everyone else." Kali looked at the portrait again. "She doesn't look like a monster." Silas's voice cracked. "She wasn't." Kali turned back to him. "You loved her." Silas's eyes softened — raw, vulnerable. "She was my last family." Kali's chest tightened. "I'm sorry." Silas looked away, as if the apology hurt more than the memory. "The curse twisted her magic. She became dangerous. I failed to save her." Kali stepped closer. "But you think I can?" Silas's gaze snapped to hers, intense and searching. "The keep thinks you can." Kali's breat hitched. "Because of the bond." Silas didn't deny it. He stepped closer, his presence cold and overwhelming, his voice dropping to a whisper. "My sister shares my soul. And your soul... is tied to mine." Kali's heartbeat thundered. Silas's eyes flickered — fear, longing, restraint. "She feels you because she feels me through you." Kali swallowed hard. "And my magic - " "Is dormant," Silas said. "Sleeping. Waiting." "For what?" Silas hesitated. Then: "For love." Kali's breath caught. "Silas — " He stepped back, as if distance could protect them both. "A true love's kiss awakens soul-magic. It is ancient. Rare. Dangerous." Kali stared at him, her body trembling. "You're afraid..." Silas's voice broke. "I cannot lose someone again." The torches flared. The portrait's eyes seemed to glow. And somewhere deep in the keep, behind iron and cursed magic, a faint pulse answered Kali's heartbeat. Silas heard it. Kali felt it. The sister was waking.
