The Keep's First Whisper

795 Words
Kali didn't sleep. The room Silas gave her was beautiful — too beautiful. Velvet drapes, carved stone walls, a bed softer than anything she'd ever touched. But the air felt wrong. Heavy. Charged. As if the keep itself was breathing around her. She lay awake, staring at the ceiling, listening to the faint hum in the walls. The pulse. It hadn't stopped since she arrived. It throbbed beneath her ribs like a second heartbeat, slow and steady, echoing through her bones. She pressed a hand to her chest, trying to calm it, but the rhythm only grew stronger. "What are you?" she whispered into the dark. The keep didn't answer. But something did. A faint whisper brushed her ear — too soft to understand, too cold to ignore. Kali sat up sharply, her breath catching. "Hello?" she whispered. Silence. Then the pulse again — harder this time, like a knock from inside her own body. Kali swung her legs off the bed. She couldn't stay here. Not with the walls humming. Not with the air whispering. Not with her heartbeat no longer feeling like her own. She opened the door and stepped into the hallway. The corridor stretched before her, lit only by flickering blue torches. Shadows clung to the walls like living things. The air smelled of old stone and forgotten magic. Kali walked slowly, her footsteps echoing too loudly. Every corner felt like it held a secret. Every window felt like an eye. Every shadow felt like a breath. She wasn't afraid. But she wasn't calm either. The keep felt... aware. As she passed a tall window, the torches dimmed. The pulse in her chest throbbed harder. Kali pressed a hand to her sternum, wincing. "Stop," she whispered. "Please." The pulse didn't stop. It answered. A faint, distant thrum — like another heartbeat responding to her own. Kali froze. It was coming from deeper in the keep. From the direction Silas told her to avoid. From the locked door. Her breath trembled. "No. No, no, no." But her feet moved anyway. The deeper she walked, the quieter the keep became. No wind. No whispers. No hum. Just silence. A suffocating, unnatural silence that pressed against her ears like cotton. The pulse in her chest grew louder, filling the emptiness. Kali reached the hallway. The air here was colder. Still. Heavy. She swallowed hard. The door stood at the end of the corridor, iron-bound and ancient, runes carved into its surface like scars. The torches near it flickered weakly, as if afraid to burn too close. Kali stepped forward. Her heart thundered in her chest. The pulse answered. The air tightened. She reached out, her fingers trembling. "Just... tell me what you are." Her fingertips brushed the iron. The door pulsed. A shock shot up her arm — sharp, electric, alive. Kali gasped, stumbling back, clutching her wrist. The door pulsed again. Then again. Then- "Kali!" She spun around. Silas stood at the entrance of the hallway, his eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. His expression wasn't anger. It was fear. "What are you doing here?" His voice was low, dangerous. Kali swallowed. "It called me." Silas's jaw tightened. "The door does not call." "Well, it did," she snapped. "It feels like... like it's inside me." Silas stepped closer, his presence filling the corridor like cold smoke. "Because she feels you." Kali's breath caught. "Your sister?" Silas nodded once, the movement stiff with pain. "She senses the bond." Kali's pulse hammered. "Gods, Silas, what bond?" Silas looked at her with a mixture of longing and terror. "The one between us." Kali's heart stopped. Silas stepped closer, his voice barely a whisper. "My sister shares my soul. And your soul... is tied to mine." Kali shook her head. "That's impossible." Silas's eyes softened — painfully, beautifully. "It is ancient magic. Older than curses. Older than kingdoms. Older than me." Kali's breath trembled. "Why me?" Silas looked away, as if the truth hurt too much to speak. "I do not know." The door pulsed again — hard enough to make the torches flicker. Kali flinched. Silas grabbed her shoulders, pulling her away from the door. "You must stay away from her." "Why?" Kali demanded. "If she is alive... if she is trapped... why wouldn't I help?" Silas's voice cracked. "Because she is dangerous." Kali stared at him. "And I'm supposed to be the one who can save her?" Silas closed his eyes, grief twisting his features. "Yes." Kali's breath hitched. "But only if..." Silas opened his eyes, meeting hers with raw vulnerability. "Only if our souls awaken." Kali swallowed. "And that happens when....?" Silas whispered, "When we share true love's kiss." The torches flared. The door pulsed violently. And somewhere behind the iron, something stirred.
