The Keep Breathes

210 Words
The moment she crossed the threshold, the air shifted. A whisper brushed her ear. A chill slid down her spine. The pulse in her chest throbbed harder. The keep was enormous - vaulted ceilings, stone walls carved with ancient runes, torches flickering with blue fire. Shadows moved along the walls like living things. The air smelled of old magic and forgotten secrets. Kali's voice was barely a whisper. "This place is... alive." Silas glanced at her. "It is bound by ancient wards. They respond to certain souls." "Souls?" Kali repeated. Silas stopped walking. He turned to her slowly, his eyes darkening. "The keep recognizes you." Kali's stomach dropped. "Why?" Silas didn't answer. He simply resumed walking. Kali hurried after him, frustration burning in her chest. "You keep saying things without explaining them." Silas's voice was quiet. "Because explanations are dangerous." Kali grabbed his arm. "I'm already here. I deserve to know." Silas froze. He looked down at her hand on his arm — a simple touch, but his expression shifted sharply, as if the contact startled him. His voice dropped to a whisper. "You should not touch me." Kali pulled her hand back. "Why?" Silas's jaw tightened. "Because the bond reacts." Kali's heart skipped. "Bond?" Silas turned away. "Not yet."
