Picture the first Thanksgiving, the recently arrived Pilgrims sitting down to a meal with the natives, eating and talking together in companionable felicity. Except there wasn’t lot of talking, because the translation protocols still weren’t completely settled, so there were lots of long silences and gesticulating and a lot of staring back and forth at one another trying to figure out what to do next. And while we were obviously the Pilgrims, joyful to have found harbor after months traveling toward an uncertain destination, it was the natives hosting us, glad to have made our acquaintance and to have the archeological treasure trove that was the gahg of Captain Bligh to enlighten them on ancient matters.
