Insanity – noun: the state of being seriously mentally ill; madness. The wind was cold and biting, the air thick with mist as we inched along the edge of the ravine. Every step along the narrow ledge was risky, the stone slick from the storm that had torn through the valley days before. One wrong step, one slip, and the fall would shatter me against the rocks below. It wasn’t the best time to make this journey, but necessity didn’t care about timing. We needed firewood. We needed meat; the stash from our first hunt was nearly gone. That left the ravine path—the only way deeper into the wilds.
