The air grew heavier with every step into the southern forest. Captain Tristan led the Black Knights in silence, his instincts sharpened, his hand never far from his sword. The ruins ahead pulsed faintly with eerie light, and the stench of blood lingered in the soil.
Then the ground trembled.
A low growl echoed through the trees, unnatural and wet, like something trying to imitate the sound of life. From the darkness emerged a hulking figure—skin split with glowing red veins, its body a grotesque mixture of man and beast. Its eyes burned with emptiness, its jaws dripping with blackened ichor.
One of the knights whispered, “Gods preserve us…”
The creature roared, charging with a force that shattered trees in its path.
Steel clashed, torches flickered, and the forest erupted in chaos. Tristan’s sword cut deep into the monster’s hide, but black ichor sprayed like acid, searing the armor of the knight beside him. The beast moved with a fury no man could match, each strike scattering even the strongest soldiers.
“Hold the line!” Tristan barked, though his voice strained against the storm. “Do not falter!”
By the time the monster collapsed—pierced through the skull by Tristan’s blade—half the knights lay bloodied, their breaths ragged. The survivors lifted their eyes toward the ruins… only to see cloaked figures scattering into the night, their ritual abandoned in haste.
“Damn it,” Tristan growled. “They used the beast to buy their escape.”
Still, not all fled. In the chaos, one magician stumbled, struck down and captured alive. The knights dragged him in chains back to the capital, a hood over his face, his lips still whispering curses in that twisted tongue.
For a moment, hope lingered—proof, finally, of the darkness poisoning the south.
But hope withered swiftly.
Days later, the emperor was summoned to the dungeons, only to find the magician’s body slumped lifeless in his cell. His throat had been slit with precision, no trace of the assassin left behind. A silence hung over the guards, thick with unease.
Tristan’s jaw clenched. “They silenced him. Someone inside these walls aids them.”
The emperor’s gaze darkened, his hand curling into a fist. Not only magicians in the shadows, but traitors in my own house.
The empire’s enemy had grown deeper, more elusive. And Alexis… Alexis, unknowingly tied to whispers of witches and bloodlines, was closer to the storm than she could ever imagine.
