The forest was thick with mist, every breath damp with the stench of rot. Captain Tristan raised a fist, halting his men. His instincts screamed—something was wrong.
An instant later, arrows whistled through the trees. Thwip! Thwip! Two knights fell before the others could raise their shields.
“White Knights!” Tristan snarled, his hawk-like eyes narrowing at the glint of armor hidden in the branches. He had anticipated this. “Form the second line—defensive circle!”
The Black Knights obeyed without hesitation, shields overlapping, spears outward.
Monsters, grotesque and writhing, surged from the shadows—fangs bared, claws dripping. Yet Tristan did not order a retreat. He saw what the enemy expected: that they would flee outward, into the White Knights’ waiting arrows.
“Not toward the edge,” Tristan said coldly, his blade already wet with black blood. “We go deeper.”
“Deeper, Captain?” one knight gasped, horrified.
“Yes,” Tristan growled. “To the heart. Kill everything in this cursed forest.”
The decision was madness to most—but genius to those who understood him.
They turned, charging toward the forest’s core. White Knights watched from afar, certain their quarry would be slaughtered by the monsters. They did not follow.
What they did not know was that Tristan’s swordsmanship was unmatched in his generation. His strikes cut through beasts as though he had studied their weaknesses for years. His movements were calm, precise, deadly—a dance of steel that inspired his men to fight like demons themselves.
Hours passed, and the ground was littered with monstrous corpses. The forest grew eerily quiet.
Exhausted but alive, the Black Knights stood around their captain.
“They’ll think we’re dead,” one whispered.
“Good,” Tristan said, wiping his blade clean. His gaze was cold, sharp as the edge of his sword. “Let them believe it. We’ll gather proof of the truth—and when the time comes, we’ll strike where they least expect.”
For now, the Black Knights vanished into the depths of the forest, hidden from the Empire, their survival a secret.
And thus, a false victory was written into history—while Tristan prepared the blade of vengeance.
