The Room That Should Never Open

1545 Words
The hallway was really cold. Amelia stood still in front of the study door with her fingers on the handle. Victoria and Sophia were behind her; they had not moved at all. The silence was really scary. In this house when it was quiet it meant something bad had already happened. Something that could not be changed. Amelia swallowed hard. "I am going in " she said, her voice was not as strong as before. She was still determined. Sophia laughed a little. It was a laugh but it was also mean. "You really do not learn do you?" Amelia did not pay attention to her. Victoria took a step forward and her heels made a clicking sound on the floor. "You think that room will give you the answers you want?" Victoria asked, she sounded calm. Amelia did not say anything. Victoria stopped behind her. "It only gives people pain, " she said, her voice soft. Then she said it again. This time it was even softer, "the kind of pain they never get over." Amelia's hand tightened on the handle. "Then I deserve to know, " she said. Those words changed something for a moment. Victoria's face changed. It was not anger, it was not hate, it was something Amelia could not understand. It went away quickly. Victoria took a breath. "Open it " she said, her voice was quiet. Sophia turned around sharply. "Mother" But Victoria stopped her. "Enough " she said. The hallway was quiet again. Amelia's breath was shaking. This was not what she expected. She thought they would stop her; she thought they would fight her. Instead, they were letting her do it. That was much worse. Amelia turned the handle slowly. It clicked the lock did not want to open at first. Then it did. A small sound came from the hallway. It was a click when the door opened. A wave of air came out and it smelled like dust, old paper, and old memories. Amelia went in first her heart was beating loud she could barely hear anything else. The room was dark, the curtains were closed, they were blocking the sunlight, the furniture was covered with sheets, everything looked like it had not been touched in a long time. It was like time had stopped, it was like her father's life had stopped. Amelia went further into the room her fingers touched the dusty desk and her chest felt tight. This was her father's place, this was where he sat this was where he worked late at night, this was where he called her from when she was little. "Amelia, I will be home soon…" Her throat felt tight. She blinked quickly no she could not break down now, not now. Behind her Sophia came into the room slowly. "Disgusting " she said, looking around the room. Victoria came in last and she did not say anything. That made Amelia feel uneasy. Because Victoria was not surprised, not all. Amelia turned around. "You said this room is locked for a reason, " she said. Victoria crossed her arms. "It is, " she said. "What reason?" But Victoria did not say anything. There was silence. Then Victoria went to the desk and put her hand on it gently, almost like she was being careful. "He trusted this room, " she said. Amelia frowned. "What does that mean?" But Victoria did not answer, instead, she opened one of the drawers slowly like she was thinking about something. Inside there were files they were stacked up neatly like someone had put them there for her to find. Amelia went forward quickly. "What are those?" But Victoria did not look at her; she just put one of the files on the desk then pushed it toward Amelia. "Things your father collected, " she said. Sophia laughed. " Useless junk " she said. But Victoria did not agree; she just put the file in front of Amelia. "Open it, " she said. Amelia was not sure her hands were shaking a little but she opened it and when she saw the page she stopped breathing it was a financial report but it was not just any report it showed that her father had given her a lot of money, properties, and shares and at the bottom she saw her father's signature. Amelia's eyes got wide. "This... This is..." Victoria stopped her. "Your inheritance, " she said. There was silence. The words hit her like a punch Amelia looked up. "What?" Sophia came closer. "That's impossible, " she said. Victoria just turned a little. "Is it?" Amelia looked at the papers again. There were documents, more transfers, all of them were dated before her father's death. All of them showed that she was supposed to get everything her hands were shaking really badly. "No... This can't be real..." Victoria just watched her closely. "Why not?" Amelia's voice was shaking. "Because I was told... I had nothing " she said. Victoria tilted her head a little. "Who told you that?" The question was in the air Amelia did not answer because the answer was standing right next to her, it was Victoria Hart. Sophia came forward sharply. "This is fake " she said, her voice was sharper, angrier. But Victoria did not react, instead, she opened another drawer. Pulled out something else a second file it looked older it was worn out almost hidden she put it in front of Amelia. "Then explain this, " she said. Amelia opened it slowly her eyes looked at the page then froze it was a revised will and in it everything had changed every asset, every share everything had been redirected, not to Victoria not fully but partially to a second person, Amelia Hart. Her breath stopped, her legs felt weak "What... Is this?" Sophia's voice went up instantly. "That's not real, " she said. Victoria looked at her and her eyes were sharp. "Sit down, " she said. Sophia froze, for the time she obeyed Amelia looked at them her mind was spinning. "Why would there be two wills?" she whispered. Victoria did not answer, instead, she said quietly "Because someone changed the original one " she said. Amelia looked up. "Who?" Victoria did not answer, instead, she said, "I do not know," but her tone suggested that she might know something. Then a loud sound came from the hallway, footsteps, and an urgent servant came into the study. "Madam Victoria, " he said. Victoria turned around sharply. "What is it?" The servant looked panicked. "There is someone outside the gate who wants to see Miss Amelia Hart, " he said. Amelia froze. "Me?" The servant nodded quickly. "He said it is urgent if she does not come out he will come in himself " he said. There was silence then a black car horn sounded from outside the mansion. It was long, low. It sounded like an order, not like a visitor. Amelia turned toward the window Victoria moved first she walked toward it slowly looked outside, and her face changed immediately for the time since Amelia had known Victoria looked uneasy. Amelia came closer. "Who is it?" But Victoria did not answer, then she said quietly "Someone who should not be here yet " she said. Sophia frowned. "What does that mean?" But Victoria had already turned away her voice was low, controlled, and almost serious. "Because if he is here now " she said, then paused "everything is going to change " she said. The car horn sounded again this time demanding attention Amelia's heartbeat got faster she walked toward the window slowly carefully and then she saw him a man got out of the black car he was tall imposing and he looked really calm the air around him felt different like pressure, like control people outside the mansion gate stepped back immediately even the guards hesitated the man adjusted his cufflinks slowly then looked up directly at the mansion directly at her Amelia froze, because she did not know him but somehow she felt like he knew everything about her Victoria's voice came from, behind her barely above a whisper "Alexander Blackwood " she said. Amelia turned around sharply. "That is him?" Victoria's face tightened a little. "Yes, " she said. Sophia's face got pale for the time she did not look confident. Outside Alexander Blackwood stepped forward again. He walked up to the guards. Spoke to them. Amelia could not hear what Alexander Blackwood was saying. She saw how the guards reacted. They did what Alexander Blackwood told them to do. They were clearly afraid of Alexander Blackwood. They were scared. They did not try to stop him. Then Alexander Blackwood looked up again. Alexander Blackwood said something out loud. This time Alexander Blackwood spoke loudly for everyone in the front yard to hear him. Alexander Blackwood said: "I am here, for Amelia Hart." It got very quiet inside the study. Amelia Hart could not breathe for a moment. Victoria's eyes got very narrow. Sophia whispered to someone: "Why does Alexander Blackwood want Amelia Hart?" Victoria did not say anything. Because Victoria did not seem to know the answer Outside Alexander Blackwood was already walking towards the gate.
