Broken Promises

"ENOUGH REN! Finish it." I called out at my 7 year old little sister. Her eyes met mine flashing with guilt before refocusing on her opponent, going low and sweeping his feet from under him with her left leg. When he began to fall she jumped up planting her feet in his chest pushing herself into a backflip landing with one foot then the other. Causing her opponent to fall back hard bouncing his head on the ground, he turned to get up but in less than a blink Zerenity, (Ren for short) kicked him hard in his temple snapping his head to the side. I smirked at her as she stepped over his unconscious body walking to me. "Fast enough for ya?" She asked me sarcastically. She's young and has a thing about her small size and besting grown warriors. "I could have made him think he had me, it's not fair to make him feel bad." 'Aww poor thing doesn't want to hurt their feelings.' My wolf Temny purred in my head. 'Yeah it'd be cute if our father wanted children instead of weapons.' I shot back at her, I could feel her roll her eyes at that. She hated our father more than I did for how he's "raising" us. "You were toying with him that's what's not fair." I said looking for her twin brother. "She's right Zerenity. Think about how you'd be helping them." Our sister Lilith said jogging up to us, she ruffled Ren's hair. Ren narrowed her eyes and pushed her hand away. "How?" Ren huffed crossing her arms. "They'll never get better if you don't let them learn from their mistakes. The best thing you can do is train everyday like the old man is watching. What would he do if he saw you p***y footing around." Lilith asked with a raised brow but I answered for Ren. "He'd kill him, that's what he'd do. Then tell you it was your fault he died, now look." I pointed to her twin Zaire to distract her from the truth I just told her. Zaire was fighting off two warriors my chest filled with pride for him. " If taking on one is becoming to easy move up in rank or number of opponents. In war the fight is almost never going to be fair. Right then the hairs on the back of my neck stood stiff, I knew who was mind linking me. "Hey nameless, your Alpha wants all his sins in his office." My fathers Luna screeched in my head. I call her his Luna because she doesn't even act like a Luna to us four, much less a step mother. Her birth given name is Abigail. "ZAIRE!" I bellowed over the crowed causing training to pause. "ALPHA'S OFFICE." He nodded turning to jog to the doors and met us. The cold air smacked our faces as we headed for the pack house. "What do you think he wants?" Lilith asked and I shrugged but it had to be unpleasant since he had his Luna mind link me. When we made it to the pack house I saw three black SUV's parked infront, I sighed knowing what was about to happen. Lilith gave me a concerned look, but was quick to cover it before the twins saw. I stopped at the steps kneeling infront of them looking them in the eyes so they could feel how serious this was. "Okay guys, there's an Alpha from another pack here so we might have to go away for awhile again. So I would need you two to be on your best behavior for Asher. I don't know for sure yet but for now I to put on brave face in front of our father any sign of weakness and he'll be pissed. So eye's forward and don't speak unless spoken to got it?" They gave me sad eyes as they nodded, I smiled at them to calm them down I could hear their hearts beat loudly. They smiled back, it was soon replaced by a stone expression. 'our good soldiers' my wolf said to me. I nodded back and started back up the stairs of the pack house. Since we're weapons not children our father would "rent" us out to other alpha's. We'd train with their warriors or do "tasks" for them, kill they threats, mostly rouge leaders that needed to be dissolved but not a need for war. Up until now it would be just Lilith and I the twins were still young so I would convince our father to let them stay on our pack lands and ask my bestfriend Asher to watch over them for me, but now I was worried she said all of us why would my father show off good that weren't on the table. He can't do this, Ren wouldn't be able to handle it and Zaire would feel his sisters pain. 'We have to protect them Hiraeth!' Temny said. 'I know' I said back before shutting her out as we got to the office doors, I needed to focus she couldn't be in my head right now. I looked at them all and smiled before I knocked on the door waiting to hear my fathers voice. "Enter." My fathers deep alpha voice vibrated the door frame. Whoever it is here must be very important I thought as I opened the door. When I walked in I saw my father sitting behind his desk his Luna standing to his right with a hand on his shoulder. They must really be trying to empress this alpha she really doesn't come in here. Two men were sitting in chair infront of my dads desk I could smell the one on the left was the alpha. Power radiated off him strong, so why would he need us. I walked to the middle of the room my little siblings filing in next to me. "Father." We said in unison making his Luna flinch. Ha I hope it hurts b***h I thought fighting back a smirk. The two in front of my fathers desk turned to look at all of us, but I could swear the alpha was look at me only. His eyes darkened and I could see the veins in his hand as he griped the arms of his chair. His beta glanced at him doing a double take and gave him a questioning look. His eyes glazed over I could see he was mind linking his alpha. "Alpha Gabriel." My father broke the silence, I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. The damn alpha's smell was drowning out everything else in the room. "These are my children I was telling you about. Kids this is alpha Gabriel of the Orin pack." The alpha looked back at my father then at us again. "Do they have names?" He laughed. My father smiled and stretched his arm out to us. "Kids please be kind and tell Alpha Gabriel your names and rank." I nodded stepping forward noticing alpha leaned forward in his chair like I was going to whisper. It was then that I got a decent look at his features. He had golden skin maybe a couple shades lighter than my own. Fawn colored curls that were gelled up and back with the sides faded down. His lip weren't full but they weren't thin either they looked like soft plums. His eyes were the star of the show, bright crystals that looked like they actually sparked. It was completely contrast to the rest of his features but they complimented him so well. My father cleared his throat breaking my out of my trance of admiring this man. Alpha Gabriel gave me a smirk letting me know he saw my stare. I felt my face get hot and I had never thanked the moon Goddess so much for my bronze skin covering the blush on my nose and cheeks. "Hiraeth, lead warrior of first sanction front line." I rushed out stepping back. Lilith stepped out next chin tucked high, baring throat but showing pride. "Lilith, second lead warrior of first sanction front line." Alpha Gabriel nodded to her and she stepped back. Zerenity took a wide step to match ours, I saw her pulling her fingers behind her back as she spoke. "Zerenity first sanction front line warrior in training." Alpha Gabriel nodded to her with a smile and she stepped back bowing her head, purposely brushing shoulders with Zaire to calm her, it's the twin bond they can sense each other closer than other werewolves. Zaire brushed shoulders with her again before stepping out. "Zaire, fist sanction front line warrior in training." He paused looking alpha Gabriel direct in his eyes. "Sir" Zaire quickly looked back down and stepped back into line. I was trying my best to breathe normal, looking an alpha in the eyes is an obvious sign of disrespect. That's not like Zaire at all what the hell got into him. I was about to mind link him when Alpha Gabriel spoke. "It's nice to meet you all. If you don't mind me asking." He looked at me as he spoke. "Lead warrior of first sanction is quite a accomplishment some train their whole life and never achieve it, how old are you and when did you take your lead?" He asked. It was weird for me, alphas never care how old Lilith and I are all they care about is using us to get what they want. "I'm twenty I turn twenty one in two weeks." His eyes lit up when I said that. "I took lead of first sanction at the age of twelve." "You took lead of first sanction and you had not even shifted yet?" Alpha asked in shock looking between my father and I. "No sir, my father wouldn't let a wolf that hasn't shifted yet be an acting warrior. I started shifting early when I was six. Youngest to shift in the pack." "Youngest I've ever heard of that's for sure. You're very impressive... Hiraeth." He said licking his lip as if he could taste my name on them. I looked at my father, he motioned back to Alpha Gabriel with his hand. I just nodded at the strange alpha. "Well that's enough about just Hiraeth, if your impressed with her I'm sure you'll be amazed by our pack house and our son when he comes home this evening, now come on everyone let's go eat lunch." My fathers Luna says looking like she was fed up with someone having an interest in me. I mean honestly I was too but just because it was a stranger, her problem was that she wanted me gone already. Getting them to come to lunch was so they could talk prices. "Very well." Alpha Gabriel said rising form his seat. My father nodded at me telling us to leave, as we were walking through the hallway I saw Asher jogging up the stairs smiling at me, he's my bestfriend the only person I trust the twins with. We imprinted when we were little, our wolves are bound together for life with a mark on the wrist. It's a lot like the connection Zerenity and Zaire share we can feel the others emotions and pain when they're really strong. I'd lay down my life for him knowing he'd do the same. When Asher reached me he bear hugged me taking me off my feet and nuzzled my neck. It's just the way Asher is, he's very in touch with his wolf. "Asher put me down." I huffed at him. "Hold on just a minuet I need this." He said into my neck still nuzzling me. I sighed and just let it happen, him and my half brother David (future alpha) have been at another pack looking for David's mate. My father wants him to take over soon and says that having a Luna is essential to that. Asher is David's friend and future beta, hence to why he went with him. "Okay Ash that's enough my fathers coming." I said into his hair. "Just a little longer Rye." He tightened his hold and I could hear his wolf purring releasing the stress they were carrying, but then the purring got louder and angrier turning into a growl. "Asher stop growling at me that's weird." I said nudging him away and the growling stopped. "I'm not growling Rye." He said looking behind me with a raised eyebrow. I stretched my neck because Asher still had his hold on me to see alpha Gabriel was the source. He was walking up to us his beta right behind him. He took a deep breath as he approached us. "Hiraeth, would you mind showing me to the dinning room?" Alpha Gabriel asked looking between Asher and I. Asher felt my embarrassment and put me down, my shirt came up showing my stomach. Alpha Gabriel's eyes flashed black before he looked back at Asher. Asher seethed with anger clenching his jaw at the alphas reaction after I my shirt back in place I put my hand on Asher's shoulder willing him to calm down. It didn't bother me because it was a normal reaction from unmated males, but Asher was super over protective. The alpha didn't have a mark so I assumed he was unmated. If I had a mate, I wouldn't let him walk out of the house without a mark look the way this man does. "Asher this is alpha Gabriel of the Orin pack. Alpha Gabriel this is Asher our next in line beta. To answer your question yes the dinning room is this way." I motioned for all of us to walk forward. "Come on Rye, I just got back I was hoping we could go to the cabin to eat." Asher said stopping us form moving. The alpha raised a brow looking annoyed that Asher was getting in his way. "Are you two together or something." He asked pointing between us. "No." My father said walking up behind me putting a hand on my shoulder. "They imprinted when they were young is all, just good friends right Hiraeth?" He said patting my shoulder harder than needed. "Yes father." I said quickly trying not to piss him off even more. "Though it wouldn't surprise me if they were mates." He said looking at alpha Gabriel and I almost chocked on my spit. "Their bond is very intense... as you can see." Asher could feel my embarrassment and gave a look of sympathy. One of the twins stomach made a noise and I thanked the Goddess that I finally had an out of this situation. "If you all excuse me that's my que I seem to have some very hungry little ones behind me." I said motioning for my sibling to follow me but my father squeezed my shoulder stopping me in my tracks. "Why don't you let Asher take them he did say that he just wanted to eat in the cabin, and alpha Gabriel did ask you to show him around." David finally came into view coning up to join the awkward situation. David is my half brother he's also younger than me but since he's my father and his Luna's child he will be alpha instead of me. Technically we're all half sibling but us four bond more because of the hate the Luna has for us. "I'll go with you guys." David said. "After we can have ice cream or something till Hiraeth gets back." Okay what in the actual f**k? He never wants to hang out with them he's not mean to them because he knows I can kick his ass but what is going on here. I raised a brow at David letting him know I was suspicious of him. He smiled back at me. "Sounds like everything is sorted out." Alpha Gabriel said bringing my attention back to him. "Shall we?" "After you." I motioned for him to walk first taking a place to the side of him one step behind, then mindlinked Asher and Lilith. 'Something is up keep you eyes and ears open.' 'That's for sure! That Alpha keeps eye f**king you and your dad seems to be okay with it.' Asher said. 'I just wish they would cut to the chase and send us on our mission' Lilith complained "So Hiraeth what's the Timber Moon pack like?" Alpha Gabriel asked making me cut the link. "We are a pack of strength and honor Alpha." It was a rehearsed answer and he noticed. "Okay... what's it like be the second oldest of the Hawthorn children." He asked and I raised a brow in confusion, people didn't really include us when speaking of the Hawthorn's. "Can I ask what exactly you mean Alpha?" I asked. "Just call me Gabriel since it's just me and you and I meant just what I asked." "I'm not the second oldest though. I’m the oldest.” I said “ You’re the oldest and your younger brother is next in line for alpha?” He questioned raising a brow “ Well yeah. he’s a male.” I said like that was obvious “That doesn’t mean anything” he said matching my tone. I could feel my wolf pacing in my head, but I couldn't place why. "His mom's the Luna, it's his title to take not mine." I was being vague on purpose hoping that I wouldn't have to go into family history. "The Luna isn't your mom as well?" When he ask that I snorted trying to keep from laughing at the question. He tilted his head to the side raising an eyebrow at me. When I knew I wouldn't laugh I sighed ready to explain. "No the Luna is not my mom. She only gave birth to David a month before Lilith was born." "Wait so who is your mother?" He asked as we entered the dinning hall. "I don't know, Alpha." I answered plainly grabbing a tray of food for the both of us. He grabbed his tray from me continuing to look at me like I had lost my mind. "How do you not know who gave birth to you." "Because I don't, I never knew her ." I said showing him where he could pick something for him to drink. He was waiting for me to explain as I led him to where my father and his Luna sit during meals. They weren't there yet so if I was going to explain I had to do it fast. "Okay I have to say this fast since my fathers Luna hates to hear about us being born." "Us?" He questioned. "Yes me and my little sisters and brother. David is the only child shared between my father and her. He is the only one with any kind of title once he is of age. The rest of us are to remain warriors the only way we'll be honored is by protecting this pack and Lilith and I do a damn good job of it. The four of us are products of affairs, that's why we don't know our mothers. Abigail, the Luna, hated that my father stepped out of their bond so much she banished our mother six months after we all were born. Since we are the alpha children he made the choice that we would live here separated from our moms. For all we know our mothers are dead, so no the Luna is not my mom." He opened his mouth to ask a question just as my father and Abigail walked up to the table. My father pulled out a seat for his Luna, she forged a smile sitting down slow making a show of it. My father eyed me as he sat down. As he was scooting his chair in severs had already placed their food in front of them. "How is the tour going?" Father asked switching his attention to the Alpha. "Great Hiraeth was just telling me some... interesting history." Alpha Gabriel said taking some bites from his plate. "Is that so?" Abigail raised a brow at me. I clenched my jaw hoping he wouldn't really bring it up. I suddenly felt stupid for telling these things to a stranger, I'm normally smarter than that. Maybe he used his Alpha status to were I couldn't lie? 'That's not it' Temny purred. 'Then what is?' 'I can't put my finger on it but, he comforts me.' I quickly shut her out noticing the conversation was now on me. "I'm sorry Temny's in a little frenzy. I should probably go run after I'm done with the tour." I said keeping my eyes on the table. "You're wolf's on edge today, huh?" The alpha asked with a hint of excitement. I glanced at him seeing him smirking, he sent a wink my way and I snapped my head down. I bit my lip trying to keep my heart steady I know my father is watching my every move. "I was just telling your father about the history you told me." The alpha said making it even harder to keep my heart steady as he continued. "About how the packed started, being one of the oldest packs in history knew some of it but hearing it from an actual descendant. I felt like I was living as the history books were written." My father and the other alpha started to conversate back and forth. I tuned them out as I looked at Abigail, I could tell she wanted to scream. By blood I was a direct descendant of this pack, by her law though I was still a motherless bastard. She met my eyes expecting me to look down, I did not. "I have an idea." She blurted keeping her eyes on me. My father and alpha Gabriel looked at us. "If Hiraeth's wolf if still needing to be let out, and we have new guest here. How about a little challenge, you now just for sport." She smirked before looking in fathers direction. "That's a wonderful idea." father said turning to alpha Gabriel. "You brought some men with you, I'm assuming they're your best warriors, how's some extra training sound?" "Extra training, how so?" Alpha Gabriel asked. "My best against your best, till the death." My father answered. Alpha Gabriel looked at my father like he'd grown two heads, my father began laughing hard. "I'm only kidding." Father said but he wasn't he's had me do it before. "They'd fight full force of course but no fatal blows." Father said relaxing the other alpha, not all the way though. "Hiraeth is your lead warrior that would mean she's one of your best." Alpha Gabriel said as if his point was obvious. "What would stop you from ripping one of my men to shreds for hurting her?" "When you have children, you'll understand. Pain is just apart of them growing up, you can't caudle them or they'll never be able to handle what life throws at them." Oh so that's why we've been treated like s**t while Daniel has lived luxury. I thought 'did you hear he doesn't have pups that means he's unmated.' Temny said 'Who let you out?' 'Don't push me out I'd just give you head ache coming to the surface.' 'shut up and go lay down.' "Hiraeth Alpha Gabriel just asked you a question." Father said sternly I turned to the side baring my neck. "I'm sorry Alpha, what was your question." I asked. "No need for throat. I just wanted to know if you're okay with this. You and your sibling could get hurt against my men they've been training longer than some of you have been alive." I looked at my father hearing the word siblings. The twins to, he agreed to wait, all father did was nod for me to answer. "I have complete confidence in all of their abilities." I said not meeting anyone's eyes. "See there we have it!" My father clapped Alpha Gabriel on the back. "We'll train hard today then play hard tonight with a feast!" Seeing that everyone had finished their meal, I tried to excuse myself getting up fast to prepare twins, but my father stopped me, grabbing my wrist. "Where are you going Hiraeth?" Father questioned. "I would like to go to our cabin sir, then to the training gym to warm up." I said bowing my head to him. "Link Lilith, she your second in command. I'm sure she can more than handle the twins. As for you, enjoy the rest of the tour with Alpha Gabriel." There was a weird hint to his tone this time. It was still a command but there was a taste of playfulness to my father. I bit my lips together hiding the smile that crept on my face. I can't believe this miniscule amount of kindness was getting to me, I needed to get away from here and fast. "Yes sir." I said bowing my head in respect. Alpha Gabriel stood and followed me through the pack house. I mindlinked Lilith telling her what was going on and how the twins would need to be prepared this time. She was upset as was I, the deal was we went on missions without question so they didn't have to. Now because of Abigail's big ass mouth they would be put on display. I was most worried about Ren, yes she could fight, yes she knows how to protect herself. But, She has a soft heart, and a fall on the sward personality. Thinking about Ren having to spar has Temny pacing in my head, we had to get them out of this. "You said you have complete confidence in your siblings." The alpha said breaking me from my thoughts. "And I do Alpha." "Please call me Gabriel or Gabe. Regardless of who your mother is you're still the product of an alpha. You rank no lower than your younger brother. Alpha blood still runs through your veins." He said grabbing my arm and stopping me in my tracks. My breath caught in my throat and I had to look away, Temny was purring at the contact. 'What is your deal' I asked her 'I told you, he makes me really comfortable' She said simply "They might have made you feel less than, but that doesn't make it true, Hiraeth." He breathed against my neck making goosebumps erupt along with the way my name slipped off his lips causing a sparks to run down my spin. He gently gabbed my jaw turning me to face him. I sighed soaking in the warmth of his hand. I started to notice his face getting closer to my and I froze. Unable to stop him from brushing his lips against mine. "RYE! There's rouges in the southeast Quadrant. Lilith took the twins there to train but cut off her link." Asher linked me, but I was running out of the pack house as soon as he said Lilith and the twins were there. "Hiraeth! What's wrong!?" Gabriel yelled after me, but soon was on my heels with heavy footstep. Someone must have mind linked him I guessed. When we got there I saw Lilith's wolf Chernit fighting off two rouges. Zaire looked up at me and grabbed Ren's hand pulling her towards me. I looked past them seeing a dirty brown rouge sprinting after them closing in fast. Zaire looked behind him seeing what I saw, suddenly he pushed Ren as hard as he could forward before turning to face the rouge. I clenched my teeth running past Ren praying I'd save Zaire in time. When the rouge was maybe five feet from him let Temny come forward enough to launch me forward jumping over Zaire to the rouge. "CLOSE YOUR EYES REN!" I yelled out as I landed sliding in the dirt. Temny purred as I ripped my claws down his ribs blood spraying out as it tried to snap at my neck. I rolled under him grabbing his paw while kicking his hind leg breaking his femur forcing him to fall beside me. He snapped at me again, I gabbed his snout squeezing till I heard a series of crunches and snaps. I straddled the wolf as he whimpering for death which I granted tilting his snout back and ripping his throat out. I looked at Chernit seeing her rip a limb off the last rouge. I looked toward the twins seeing Zerenity clinging to Gabriel while Asher ran up to them. I felt something wet touch my hand, it was Chernit rubbing her snout on my hand. "You don't wanna know what happened to the last snout that was in my hands." I laughed then heard her snort at me. I looked at my hand seeing it covered in blood. "Go clean up okay." I said nodding toward our cabin, she nodded back before sprinting that way. When I looked back I saw Asher and Gabriel having a heated discussion, I rolled my eyes before walking over. The closer I got the more I heard not that it was hard they were practically yelling at each other. I sped up feeling Asher getting to a boiling point. "With all due respect alpha, I would like to take Zerenity home." Asher growled "And I keep telling you beta, show me the way and I'll take her." The alpha seethed "I can't do that Sir that is Hiraeth's home and I respect her privacy." Asher shot back "Zaire where are you? I wanna go home." Ren whined as I approached them, Zaire reached up and grabbed her hand. "And you will." I told Ren then nodded to Asher and he took her as the alpha looked pissed.
