Chapter 1:LeftAtTheAltar

2000 Words
The first thing Emily Carter noticed when she looked in the mirror wasn’t the lace on her wedding dress. It was the smile she couldn’t stop wearing. For months, she’d imagined this morning a hundred different ways. She’d pictured herself crying from happiness, fumbling with her vows, even tripping over the hem of her dress. Instead, she felt… calm. Today, she was marrying the man she’d loved for four years. A soft knock came at the dressing room door. “Emily?” her wedding planner called gently. “We have about twenty minutes before it’s time.” Emily glanced at the antique clock on the wall and laughed nervously. “So it’s really happening.” The planner smiled. “It is.” When the door closed again, Emily picked up her phone. No new messages. She frowned. Her thumb hovered over Selena’s name. Selena ❤️ Where are you? Everyone’s asking for the maid of honor. Call me when you see this. Delivered. No reply. Emily sighed. Typical Selena. Her younger sister had always been spontaneous. She was probably running around the venue solving last-minute problems or trying to surprise Emily with something sentimental. She smiled to herself. Even on the busiest days, Selena always managed to make people laugh. A vibration interrupted her thoughts. Her heart leaped. Ethan ❤️ “Can’t wait to see you.” Emily’s cheeks warmed instantly. She typed back. “You’re not supposed to text the bride today.” Three dots appeared almost immediately. “Worth breaking tradition.” She laughed quietly. “I’ll see you at the altar.” She pressed send and slipped the phone into her bouquet bag. The butterflies in her stomach returned, but this time they felt comforting. This was it. Everything she’d dreamed about. A home. A family. A future. Outside the bridal suite, she could hear the faint sound of string music beginning as guests took their seats. The ceremony was about to start. The planner returned, her expression bright. “They’re ready for you.” Emily took one last look at herself in the mirror. White silk. Pearl earrings. The necklace her mother had given her before she passed away. She touched it gently. “I wish you were here,” she whispered. Then she smiled through the sudden sting in her eyes. “I’m happy, Mom.” With one steady breath, Emily lifted her bouquet. She had no way of knowing… …that by the end of the next hour, everything she believed about love, family, and forever would be gone. The music changed. Emily tightened her grip on the bouquet as the church doors slowly opened. A wave of warm light spilled across the polished marble floor. Hundreds of faces turned toward her. Friends, Family, Colleagues. People who had watched her grow up. All smiling. Waiting. Her father offered his arm. “You ready, sweetheart?” Emily looked up at him and nodded. “I’ve been ready for four years.” His eyes softened. “Then let’s not keep your future husband waiting.” The words made her laugh. The organ swelled as they stepped into the aisle. Every step echoed through the grand cathedral. Emily barely noticed the flowers lining the pews or the candles flickering beneath the stained-glass windows. Her eyes searched for only one person. Ethan. He should have been standing at the altar. Smiling. Waiting for her. Instead… The altar was empty. Emily slowed. Her father felt it immediately. “What’s wrong?” She blinked. Maybe Ethan had stepped into the vestry. Maybe there had been a last-minute issue. The officiant stood awkwardly beside the altar, glancing toward the side entrance every few seconds. That wasn’t part of the plan. The music continued, though now it sounded strangely distant. Emily reached the front of the church. Still no Ethan. The officiant forced a reassuring smile. “If everyone could give us just a moment…” A murmur swept through the guests. Emily looked toward the wedding coordinator. The woman’s smile had disappeared. She was whispering urgently into her headset. Another bridesmaid hurried across the back of the church. Someone else disappeared through a side door. Emily’s heartbeat quickened. “Where is he?” No one answered. Her father placed a comforting hand over hers. “I’m sure it’s something small.” She wanted to believe him. Ethan wasn’t careless. He was always early. Always organized. Always— Her phone buzzed inside her bouquet bag. Hope surged through her. “It’s him.” She pulled it out so quickly she nearly dropped it. Unknown Number. Her smile faded. She answered anyway. “Hello?” A nervous male voice spoke. “Ms. Carter?” “Yes?” “I’m… I’m one of the chauffeurs hired for today’s wedding.” Emily frowned. “…Okay?” “I thought someone should know.” Her stomach tightened. “Know what?” There was a pause. Then the driver spoke quietly. “I drove Mr Ethan to the airport this morning.” Emily’s smile vanished completely. “I’m sorry…” “You have the wrong person.” “I don’t think I do.” Silence. “He asked me to leave him at the international terminal.” Emily stared ahead, no longer seeing the church around her. “That’s impossible.” “I’m sorry, ma’am.” The call ended. Emily lowered the phone slowly. Her fingers had gone cold. Airport? No. There had to be a mistake. Ethan wouldn’t… He couldn’t… The whispers behind her grew louder. Guests exchanged uneasy glances. The officiant looked toward the church doors again. Still no groom. Emily turned to the wedding planner. “Tell me what’s happening.” The planner hesitated. Just for a second. It was enough. Emily’s pulse began pounding in her ears. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong. And for the first time that morning… She wasn’t waiting for her wedding to begin. She was waiting for someone to tell her why her fiancé had disappeared. Emily stood motionless at the altar. The church, so full of life only minutes ago, had fallen into an uneasy hush. Every whisper felt louder than the last. “Where is the groom?” “Did something happen?” “Is this a prank?” She couldn’t bring herself to look at the guests. Not yet. The wedding planner hurried back down the aisle, her face pale. “Emily…” “What is it?” The woman swallowed hard. “We’ve searched the entire venue.” Emily’s heart pounded. “And?” “…He’s not here.” The words echoed in her mind. He’s not here. Her father stepped forward immediately. “Call him again.” “I have.” “No answer.” One of Ethan’s groomsmen approached, looking equally shaken. “I’ve been trying since this morning,” he admitted. “His phone goes straight to voicemail.” Emily frowned. “That’s impossible. He texted me before the ceremony.” “When?” “About half an hour ago.” The groomsman exchanged a confused glance with the wedding planner. “He didn’t have his phone.” Emily blinked. “What?” “He left it.” He held up a black smartphone. “Ethan forgot this in the groom’s suite.” Emily stared at it. No… He never forgot his phone. Especially not today. Her father gently took the device. “It might help us figure out where he went.” The screen lit up. No passcode. A flood of unread notifications appeared. Missed calls. Wedding reminders. Messages. Then… A message notification appeared at the top of the screen. Selena ❤️ Emily’s breath caught. Why would Selena be texting Ethan? Her father hesitated before handing her the phone. “I think…” He couldn’t finish the sentence. With trembling hands, Emily opened the conversation. The latest message sat at the top. Selena: Boarding starts in fifteen minutes. Emily frowned. Boarding? She scrolled upward. Ethan: Is Emily suspicious? Selena: Not at all. She still thinks I’m helping with the wedding. Her fingers froze. No. No… She kept reading. Ethan: Once we’re gone, there’s no turning back. Selena: That’s exactly what I want. Emily’s vision blurred. She couldn’t stop. She needed this to be fake. A joke. Anything but this. Then she reached the final message. Sent only forty-three minutes ago. Selena: I’ll meet you at Gate 18. Don’t look back. The phone slipped from Emily’s hands. It hit the marble floor with a sharp c***k. The sound echoed through the silent church. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Emily felt as though the ground beneath her had disappeared. Her sister. Her fiancé. Together. Every smile. Every family dinner. Every wedding appointment. Every hug Selena had given her… Every promise Ethan had made… A lie. Emily’s knees buckled. Her father caught her before she hit the floor. “Oh, sweetheart…” She didn’t cry. Not yet. The pain was too deep for tears. She only whispered one question. “…Why?” No one had an answer. Only silence. And in that silence, every guest finally understood. The groom hadn’t abandoned the wedding. He had abandoned the bride. For her own sister. Outside the church, someone pushed open the front doors. The distant click of camera shutters drifted inside. The story was already escaping the building. Emily didn’t notice. Her entire world had just ended. And she had no idea… …that someone else had just arrived. Emily could no longer hear the whispers individually. They had become a single, suffocating hum. Every pair of eyes in the church seemed fixed on her. Some were filled with pity. Others with curiosity. A few didn’t even bother hiding their fascination. The bride had been left at the altar. It was the kind of scandal people remembered. Emily lowered her gaze. She had never felt so exposed. Her father rested a hand on her shoulder. “We should leave.” She nodded faintly. There was nothing left to stay for. Then— The massive church doors opened. A rush of cool air swept through the cathedral. The sound alone was enough to draw every eye toward the entrance. A tall man stepped inside. His charcoal suit was impeccably tailored. His movements were unhurried. Measured. Confident. He didn’t look around the room as though searching for someone. He walked as if he already knew exactly where he was going. Behind him followed two assistants and several security personnel who stopped at the entrance, allowing only him to continue. The whispers changed. “…Is that…?” “It can’t be.” “Alexander Knight?” Emily looked up. She had never met him before. But she recognized the name. Everyone did. One of the youngest billionaires in the country. A man whose companies appeared in the news almost weekly. A businessman known for his brilliance… …and for revealing almost nothing about himself. He ignored every curious stare. Ignored the guests. Ignored the cameras. His attention settled on one person. Emily. The room seemed to hold its breath as he stopped a few feet away. For several seconds… Neither of them spoke. Emily frowned slightly. “Do… do I know you?” Alexander’s expression remained unreadable. “No.” As though this moment had unfolded exactly as he expected. He glanced briefly at the shattered phone lying near the altar. Then back at Emily. “I came because you needed another choice.” Emily stared at him, confused. “I don’t understand.” “You will.” Silence settled over the church once more. Even the reporters standing just outside the entrance had stopped shouting, waiting to see what would happen next. Alexander took one final step forward. Emily found herself asking the question that had been haunting her since he walked through the doors. “Why are you here?” For the first time, a faint smile touched Alexander Knight’s face. As though he knew something she didn’t. Then he said: “Because your story isn’t over yet.”
