POV: Elowen
Kael's pack poured through the shattered wall like a flood of nightmares. Six wolves, massive and twisted, their eyes glowing the same sickly green as their Alpha's. Not natural wolves. Something corrupted, wrong, stinking of dark magic and bloodlust.
"Stay close!" Varyn barked at me, crimson flames erupting along his arms as he met the first wave head-on.
Stay close to him? The man I'd sworn to kill? Every fiber of my being screamed to run, to let them tear each other apart. But Kael's eyes had locked onto me, hungry and possessive, and I knew with cold certainty that running would only get me hunted down and broken.
So I fought.
Blue fire exploded from my hands, catching the nearest wolf mid-leap. It screamed, a sound no animal should make, and crashed into its packmates. The smell of burning fur and flesh filled the air, mixing with dust and decay.
"The hybrid has teeth!" Kael laughed, circling Varyn like a shark. "Good. I prefer my prizes with spirit. Makes breaking them so much sweeter."
"Touch her and die," Varyn snarled, his Alpha power rolling off him in waves that made the air shimmer.
"Big words. Let's see if you can back them up."
They collided again, and the mansion shook from the impact. Varyn was stronger than I'd imagined, faster, his movements precise and brutal. But Kael fought dirty, using his pack to distract, to create openings.
A wolf lunged at me from the side. I dropped low, reached for the earth, and sent roots exploding upward. They caught the creature in mid-air, wrapping around its legs, its throat, squeezing until bones cracked. It went limp.
Two more took its place.
I'd never fought this many at once. Never had to. My heart hammered as I backpedaled, fire in one hand, the other calling water from the broken pipes beneath the mansion. Steam hissed as elements collided, creating a scalding barrier between me and the wolves.
"Impressive," a new voice drawled from the darkness.
My head snapped toward the sound. Another figure stood in the shadows near the collapsed wall, watching with obvious interest. Tall and lean, with silver hair that caught the moonlight and eyes like chips of ice. Another Alpha. I could feel his power from here, different from Varyn's blazing intensity or Kael's corrupted strength. This one was cold, calculated, patient.
"Darius," Varyn spat, not taking his eyes off Kael. "This isn't your fight."
"Isn't it?" The silver-haired Alpha stepped into better light, and I saw he was younger than Varyn, beautiful in a dangerous, otherworldly way. "A royal hybrid, untouched and unclaimed? That concerns every Alpha in the territory. Especially when her power signature is drawing attention from miles around."
"She's under my protection!"
"Your protection?" Darius's smile was sharp as a knife. "Or your claim? Because those are very different things, Holt."
A wolf crashed into me from behind. I went down hard, its weight crushing the air from my lungs, claws raking my shoulder. Pain exploded white-hot across my vision. The creature's jaws opened wide, lunging for my throat.
My mark burned. Not the familiar warmth, but searing, agonizing heat that felt like my arm was being torn apart from the inside. Power erupted from me in a shockwave that sent the wolf flying, its body slamming into the far wall hard enough to c***k stone.
But the power didn't stop. It kept building, kept growing, racing through my veins like wildfire. The mark blazed so bright it lit up the entire mansion, casting strange shadows that seemed to move on their own. I screamed as energy I couldn't control poured out of me in waves.
The remaining wolves howled and fled, their Alpha corruption no match for whatever I'd become.
"Impossible," Kael breathed, his eyes wide with shock and greed. "She's awakening. The royal bloodline is awakening!"
"Elowen!" Varyn's voice cut through the chaos. "Control it! Pull it back!"
"I can't!" Tears streamed down my face as power tore through me, reshaping reality around us. The floor cracked. The walls groaned. Objects began to float, defying gravity. "I don't know how!"
Images flashed through my mind. My father, his hands glowing with this same terrible light. My mother, moving faster than thought itself. The hunters, screaming as our house burned. And words, old words in a language I shouldn't understand but somehow did.
You are more than hybrid. You are the bridge between worlds.
"She'll bring the whole place down!" Darius warned, but he didn't sound afraid. He sounded fascinated.
Varyn reached for me, pushing through the maelstrom of energy. His hand closed around my wrist, around the mark, and suddenly I felt him. Not just physically, but deeper. His emotions crashed into mine. Determination. Fear. And something else, something fierce and possessive that made my breath catch.
"Look at me," he commanded, his golden eyes blazing. "Focus on my voice. You're not alone in this. I've got you."
"You killed them," I sobbed, even as his presence anchored me, gave me something to hold onto. "You killed my parents."
"No." His grip tightened. "I swear on my life, I didn't. But we don't have time for this now. You need to pull this power back before it kills us all."
"I don't know how!"
"Yes, you do. It's in your blood. Your father knew this would happen. He prepared you."
Had he? Those late-night lessons, teaching me the old language, showing me meditation techniques I'd thought were games. Had he known this power slept inside me, waiting?
I closed my eyes, reached inward like he'd taught me. Found the raging torrent of energy and tried to grasp it, to pull it back into whatever place it had come from.
It resisted. Fought me. Wanted to burn and destroy and remake everything.
"That's it," Varyn murmured. "You're doing it. Just a little more."
The power began to recede, slowly, reluctantly, flowing back into the mark on my arm. The floating objects clattered to the ground. The light dimmed. My breathing came in ragged gasps as the last of it locked back into place, leaving me shaking and weak.
Varyn caught me as my legs gave out. "I've got you."
"How touching," Kael sneered, bleeding from a dozen wounds but still standing. "The mighty Varyn Holt, brought low by a hybrid girl. The Council will love hearing about this."
"The Council can go to hell," Varyn shot back.
"Careful, Holt. You're already on thin ice with them. Protecting an unregistered hybrid with royal blood? That's treason."
"Then I guess I'm a traitor."
Darius laughed, the sound cold and amused. "This gets better by the minute. I do love a good scandal."
"Stay out of this, Darius," Varyn warned.
"Oh, I don't think so." The silver-haired Alpha's ice-blue eyes met mine, and I felt that same pull, that same recognition my mark had shown with Varyn. "She's far too interesting to ignore. And if you won't claim her properly, someone else will."
The floor beneath us groaned ominously. I looked down and saw cracks spreading like spiderwebs across the stone, glowing with residual power from my outburst. The entire foundation was compromised, unstable, ready to collapse.
"Everyone out!" Varyn commanded. "Now!"
Kael snarled but backed toward the exit, his remaining wolves limping after him. "This isn't over, Holt. She's a prize worth fighting for."
"Then bring your best," Varyn called after him. "You'll need it."
Darius didn't move, just watched me with that unsettling intensity. "We'll meet again, little hybrid. Soon."
Then he was gone, disappearing into the shadows like smoke. The mansion shuddered violently. Support beams cracked. The ceiling began to cave in.
"Come on!" Varyn pulled me toward the door, but my legs still weren't working properly, the power drain leaving me weak as a newborn.
Then the world exploded. Not metaphorically. The entire center of the mansion detonated outward in a blast of stone and fire and pure energy. Something in my power surge must have ignited old magic in the foundation, something volatile and ancient.
I felt myself lifted, thrown by the shockwave, weightless and spinning. Varyn's hand slipped from mine. His shout of my name was lost in the roar of destruction.
I flew through the air, through debris and smoke, the ground racing up to meet me impossibly far below.
The last thing I saw before darkness claimed me was three figures standing at the edge of the destruction. Varyn, his hand outstretched, golden eyes wide with something that looked like terror. Kael, bloodied and furious. And Darius, his expression unreadable, ice-blue eyes tracking my fall with predatory focus.
Then there was nothing but air and fire and the certainty that I was about to die.
Again..
