Ava woke up to the sound of rain tapping against her window, the grey sky mirroring her mood. The road trip with Lily and Ethan was still fresh –– they'd laughed, driven, and for a moment, she'd forgotten about _him_. Adrian. During one of those late-night drive chats, she'd mentioned him to the gang, but brushed it off like it was no big deal. "Just this guy…maybe I imagined the spark."
Lily had raised an eyebrow but dropped it. Ethan just teased, "Imagined sparks = crush!"
Ava hadn't told them the rest –– the thread, the messages, the void.
As she sipped coffee, a determination sparked. She'd wanted love, craved it even. Why was she letting him slip away?
Lily poked her head into the kitchen. "Hey, sleepyhead. Plans today?"
Ava shared her plan. "Heading to the bookshop."
Lily smiled knowingly. _Her_ bookshop. "Want company?"
Ava nodded. "I'll wait. Maybe…"
At Lily's Bookshop, Ava settled into her favorite corner, surrounded by novels and the scent of old paper. The hours ticked by –– customers came, browsed, left. Ava's hope waded, but she stayed.
She lost herself in a romance novel, tears pricking as the heroine waited for her love. Ava's phone buzzed –– Ethan checking in.
Ava smiled, typing back. _I'm fine. Just…waiting._
Lily nudged her. "Want coffee break?"
Ava nodded, and they walked to the café. As they sipped, Ava's gaze drifted to the spot where Adrian had sat.
Lily followed her gaze. "You okay?"
Ava shrugged. "I need to move on."
As the sun dipped, Lily nudged her. "Ethan's texting. Birthday plans tonight."
Ava smiled, pushing Adrian aside. "Tell him I'm in."
The night was a whirlwind –– Ethan's bar, friends, cake, laughter. Ava danced, lost in the music. But as midnight approached, her gaze drifted to the door.
Lily followed her gaze. "He'll show if he's meant to."
Ava shook her head. "I need to move on."
The party blurred, but the bookshop lingered in her mind. Tomorrow she'd go back.
As they wrapped up, Ethan grinned. "Birthday wish?"
Ava's heart whispered _Adrian_. But she smiled. "Next book hits bestseller."
The night ended with hugs and cake crumbs. Ava knew she'd wait –– for him, for love, for whatever came.
The next day, Ava returned to the bookshop, settling into her corner. The hours ticked by, the silence stretching. As she packed up, a figure appeared at the door.
Ava's heart skipped –– but it wasn't Adrian.
Lily smiled. "Closing time. Want to grab dinner?"
Ava hesitated, then smiled. "I'd like that."
As they walked, Ava realized –– maybe love wasn't about waiting, but about living.
