Chapter Seven: The Distraction

408 Words
Ava, Lily, and Ethan went on a road trip to a nearby town, blasting music and laughing. They stopped at a quaint café, where Ethan convinced them to try the most ridiculous food combinations. Ava giggled, biting into a weirdly delicious burger. "This is crazy!" Lily sipped a frappuccino. "Crazy good, right? Like, who puts pineapple on a burger?" Ethan defended his choice. "Hey, it's a thing now! Like avocado toast – weird, but hip." Ava teased, "You’re just trying to make us eat weird stuff." Ethan grinned. "Guilty! You guys need to live a little." They spent the afternoon wandering the town's art district, snapping quirky photos and mocking each other's poses. As the sun began to set, casting a warm orange glow over the streets, Ethan suggested a picnic in the park. Lily pulled out a blanket and sandwiches from her bag. "I came prepared." Ava smiled, helping to spread the food. "You always come prepared." As they settled down, Ethan pulled out his guitar and started strumming. The music blended with the sounds of the park – kids laughing, birds chirping, the hum of life. Lily leaned back on her elbows. "This is perfect." Ava nodded, closing her eyes. The stress of writing deadlines and everyday life melted away. But as the music shifted to a slower tune, Ava's mind wandered. She hadn't heard from Adrian. No messages, no calls… Had she imagined it all? The thought unsettled her, like a thread pulling loose. She opened her eyes, focusing on her friends. Ethan was watching her, guitar paused. "Hey, you okay? Spacey." Ava forced a smile. "Yeah, just…thinking about the book." Lily raised an eyebrow. "The _romance_ book?" Ava laughed, deflecting. "Maybe the ending's messing with me." Ethan strummed a dramatic chord. "Ooh, the _tragic_ ending?" Ava rolled her eyes. "Not tragic, just…complicated." The sun dipped below the trees, casting the park in a soft twilight. They packed up, the night air filled with laughter and music. As they drove back, Ava's phone buzzed – a group pic from the trip. Ethan glanced at her phone. "Post it, post it! #RoadTripVibes" Ava hesitated, then uploaded it. "Caption it _Burger chaos_?" Lily chimed in, "No, _Taste-bud traitors_ " Ava laughed, locking her phone. The car fell quiet, the music shifting to a softer beat. Ava's thoughts drifted back to Adrian. The thread doesn't untie… With no contact or communication for days, had she imagined it all?
