Chapter Twelve: The Next Step

Weeks blurred into laughter, coffee dates, and stolen glances. Ava's friends knew Adrian was special; her family welcomed him with open arms.

One Friday, Adrian asked, his voice low, "Want to cook dinner at mine tomorrow? My kitchen's got a great view."

Ava's heart skipped. "I'd love to. What can I bring?"

Adrian's smile was a slow burn. "Just you."

Saturday evening, Ava arrived at Adrian's penthouse, a bottle of wine in hand. The view stole her breath - the city glittered like diamonds.

Adrian's eyes raked over her, his voice husky.

"You look stunning."

Ava's dress was simple, her smile brighter.

"Thanks. You don't look so bad yourself."

Dinner was a symphony - garlic shrimp, roasted veggies, and Adrian's eyes on hers. As they cooked, their banter flowed, flirtatious and easy.

Over dinner, they talked about everything --favorite books (Ava: classics, Adrian: sci-fi), music (Ava: indie, Adrian: jazz), dreams (Ava: publish a novel, Adrian: travel).

Ava laughed, her eyes sparkling. "You'd really travel the world?"

Adrian's gaze locked onto hers. "With the right person."

Ava's heart thranged. "What makes someone

'right'?"

Adrian's smile was a promise. "Someone who makes me want to be better."

Post-dinner, they settled on the couch, the TV flickering. Adrian's fingers brushed hers, sending sparks up her arm.

As the credits rolled, Adrian's voice was low.

"Ava?"

"Yeah?" Her voice was a whisper.

Adrian's eyes locked onto hers. "I really like you."

Ava's heart pounded. "I like you too."

Adrian's smile was a promise. "Want to make this real?"

Ava's response was a nod, a lean in.

Their lips met, the world narrowing. Adrian's hands tangled in her hair, his voice a growl.

"Mine."

Ava's response was a whisper. "Yours”.

The night blurred, the world shrinking to them.

Clothes scattered, whispers turned to gasps.

Adrian's touch set her skin on fire; Ava's nails raked his back.

As they melted into each other, Ava knew — this felt like home. Which was funny, because there was no bump, but her wish had full effect.
