“Fancy you remembering it,” the Marchioness said in her soft voice. “But Laverdale, I am told, grows lovelier every year.” “I like to think so,” the Duke answered. “I have some new horses that I am very anxious for his Lordship to see.” There was silence for a moment and then on an impulse the Marchioness said, “I think it is only right and fair that you should see this.” She held out Oleta’s note and the Duke took it from her. As he read it, the Marchioness sat down and so did the Marquis, who was thinking that his wife had made a mistake. There was, however, nothing he could do about it. “So your daughter does not want to marry me,” the Duke remarked a little sourly. “What worries me,” the Marchioness answered, “is that she has ridden off alone.” “Do you mean without a groom?”
